    HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus which causes the Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS. HIV is mostly transmitted by sharing injection drug equipment or unprotected sexual intercourse. HIV infects CD4+ T cells and integrates its genetic information into the host cell. The infection of HIV is often not recognized for years. Once enough T cells are destroyed, however, AIDS breaks out. Symptoms of AIDS include recurring fever, weight loss, skin rashes and persistent white lesions on the tongue or mouth. Without intervention AIDS is fatal.
    There are several reasons why there has not been an HIV vaccine so far. To make an HIV vaccine we need a proper immune response. However, our immune system is often not able to recognize HIV. Moreover, HIV is highly diverse as it has a high mutation rate. As a consequence, a single classical HIV vaccine might not protect against all HIV particles.
    A few years ago broadly neutralizing antibodies were discovered. Broadly neutralizing antibodies recognize conserved proteins on the surface of HIV. Unfortunately only a rare B Cell poplation can make broadly neutralizing antibodies. But scientists managed to make an HIV vaccine where broadly neutralizing antibodies are produced in 97% of cases (in a clinical phase I trial, IAVI G001). These promising results might soon lead to an effective HIV vaccine.

    Having HIV for 31 years and 28 years in full blown AIDS let me say that taking the medications for so long is in itself destructive. I am now in kidney failure stage - 3, I have developed epilepsy: having both major & minor seizures, I also have neuropathy: experiencing pain every moment of everyday, I am weak & fatigued most of the time, additionally I have gone through periods of wasting: dropping to 75 pounds at onetime in my life. While I have gained some weight back, I have lost muscle tissues that I will never regain. While COVID - 19 has a hand full of variants, HIV has 50 million plus variants. I have lived by faith at times when there were no meds available for my strain of HIV. I have a hyper immune system but I am in full blown AIDS because I am systematic and a vaccine would be of no benefit to me because of the damage that has already been inflicted on my body. Prayers are appreciated. God bless, Timothy 🙏🏼

    Hey guys, I wanted to clarify a few things since some of you had burning follow-up questions.
    - IMPORTANT: if you suffer from HIV PLEASE seek medical advice from doctors in hospitals. I am saying this because some people spam that you can be "cured from HIV" by taking some herbs/vitamins etc and THAT IS WRONG. Please listen to your local doctors and not some spam youtube comments.
    - Will the vaccine work as a protection or also cure infected people? Right now, the vaccine is more thought as a protection. As I pointed out in the video, HIV hides in the immune system and becomes more and more diverse over time. We cannot estimate how effective the vaccine would be in HIV patients but since HIV has the aforementioned characteristics it's likely that more interventions are required for HIV patients.
    - Can I get the vaccine? For now, one clinical phase I trial has successfully been completed. The next steps are to start phase II and then phase III trials where more people are vaccinated and different parameters are tested (required dosages, rare side-effects etc). Until these trials have been finished the vaccine cannot enter phase IV trials and be approved.
    - Small correction: In the video, I said that broadly neutralizing antibodies were measured in the clinical trial. In reality, the rare subtype of immune cells which make broadly neutralizing antibodies were detected.
    - A small fraction of people has been cynical regarding the transmission of HIV. It is true that HIV can be transmitted by sexual intercourse. However, people can also be born with HIV when their mothers have been HIV positive during pregnancy. People in monogamous relationships can also become infected with HIV if their partners are infected. HIV patients have to face a potentially devastating disease - we do not need to make it worse by judging them.
    - Lastly, some of you asked about my accent. I'm from Austria and meaning I grew up speaking German. So, I normally use harsh words like SCHNITZEL, SAUERKRAUT or NEIN while being dressed like the people in the Sound of Music.
    Hope that answered your questions! L3

      While they're clearly not comparable in many, many, many ways, if Covid has taught us anything, it's the need for wide scale international medical cooperation. I have a feeling we're going to start seeing a lot of breakthroughs in the medical industry in the coming years. Covid has changed the way we do science, and it has also revealed the biggest stumbling block to vaccine research for any virus: money. With proper funding, we managed to create a half a dozen Covid vaccines in a year.
      Can you imagine if we had funded HIV/AIDS research like this when the virus was first detected? We could have eradicated the virus before HW took office.

    • @holdon4992
      @holdon4992 3 года назад +1

      @@codyofathens3397 I have always agreed with international medical cooperation but in the early days of the virus there were fights about who discovered it first. In the meantime, then, like now, politicians ruled the day. While a small breakout of Legionnaires Disease (whatever it’s called now) the reaction was swift. Since HIV/AIDS was primarily affecting homosexuals, it was mostly ignored. If prevention and education occurred earlier, unlike last year’s inept handling of taking preventable measures, the disease would have not be as long and large pandemic as it is, which, 40 years later, has 38 million plus dead and many infected. Even now, it pains me to meet young people with HIV. Since it’s treatable and no longer a short but sure death sentence, the attitude towards has become dangerously lax.
      Anyway, the science forty years ago and now is vastly different. The advancements are huge! Business is still business and the science used for the different vaccines shows competition still rules the day.
      Yes,in a perfect world, scientists would cooperate world wide. However, capitalism still rules. At least we have a good president who is trying hard and strong to get this pandemic under control even while politicians are being totally ridiculous, i.e., Republicans, and the former president got vaccinated in secret so his followers still think it’s a hoax. So, people will continue to get sick, mutations will continue and we’ll probably all need new shots every year for these mutations because people are selfish.
      So, that’s what it comes down to here is the same thing. Profitability. Yes, I believe science will eventually come up a vaccine or cure. However, we don’t know the long term effects of the new vaccines. The original AZT was poison and the early anti-viral drugs caused unexpected side effects. The newer drugs were better but I’m sticking to staying safe and watching and waiting.

    • @codyofathens3397
      @codyofathens3397 3 года назад

      @@holdon4992 Agreed! We need global cooperation on science of all kinds, and that is beginning in earnest, I think. But until most research is shifted back to the university, and out of the drug company's personal R&D lab, we're never going to get to a point where it's not a concern how profitable a vaccine or cure is.
      Had HIV hit straight and white communities with the same fervor it hit gay and black communities in the 80s, we wouldn't even know the name of the virus today. Blip on the radar. But it hit two of the most disenfranchised segments of society at the time, and so profitability was minimal, to say the least.

    • @holdon4992
      @holdon4992 3 года назад

      @@codyofathens3397 ah, but university funding also comes from big PHARMA as well. The exclusivity of finding a new drug or treatment, probably a condition a drug company uses when giving money, adds to a university’s prestige. It’s another nice dream to think universities will share but it still comes back to the same old thing: follow the money. Sigh.

    Great video, a lot of work has been gone into antibody research but I’m curious what your thoughts on generating cellular (NK & CD8 CTL Cells) immunity as a way to combat HIV? Jay Levy & Bruce Walker have gone into depth about cellular immunity in long term non-progression of HIV. I’m also curious about your thought on combating latent viral reservoirs in the brain, bowl, bone marrow as well as how to combat the viral genome integration. My opinion, an effective therapy/ vaccine will have to have multiple stages in order to clear out the virus and generate long lasting immunity.

  • @chrismilbank

    For now rebuilding innate immunity, to do so rebuilding gut and mucosal layers microbiome. Ozone will strip the spikes from the virus, and a mix of fulvic and humic acids signal to natural killer cells which cells have latent virus in them. Of course vit c and d and zinc selenium very helpful too.
