*Thinks a little bit too hard about how the reason why sherlock is so kind and sweet to children is because he knows what it's like to feel overlooked and misunderstood and regarded as childish both because of his brain being so stilted from normalicy and severe childhood traumas rendering him disconnected and his maturity stunted*

I do think you are correct, but I see sherlock as coded with high functioning autism, meaning another cause of his immaturity or his ability to get along with children better than adults is just that his brain is wired differently
Whether it be from trauma or autism, I think he just gets along with children because he thinks in a very similar way. Seeing the world in absolutes, not really worrying about the consequences of his actions and having little to no filter most of the time, it makes sense that he would connect more with people who share his way of thinking
If you couldn't tell I really like see neurodivergent characters in media and due to being neurodivergent myself, I hyperfixate on them an analyse them to pieces lol

EXACTLY. HE'S NOT A SOCIOPATH. although your point doesn't quite work because sociopaths can still form connections with people and it's obvious that he's formed a connection with John, and therefore anyone that John likes, Sherlock will be more likely to trust.
      here's my theory:
given that he generally dislikes social gatherings, hates meeting new people, has obvious coping mechanisms, and his mind palace is just a big ol' escape route when he's in a situation he doesn't like, I deduce that he is at the very least autism spectrum.

If I could weigh in? 😊 I was diagnosed with Aspergers/ASD - high functioning labels are quite outdated since you can't tell how someone is coping from the outside. And autism actually isnt that similar to sociopathy as assumed, autistic folks are often hyper empathetic, but just communicate it differently 💕 anyways I like to think Sherlock was misdiagnosed as a child and just hasn't bothered to engage with professionals since (and why should he? A lot of drs misunderstand neurodivergent folks)

Because if he didn't he would have to admit that his flaw is that he cares too much, and that can be exploited, IS exploited by Moriarty and Euros. He cares too much, and that terrifies him, so he claims to be a sociopath and tries his best to pretend that he doesn't care as much as he does.

I once saw a conference by a psychiatrist specialist in ASD, and made a point of making his stance clear that Sherlock, although a self proclaimed sociopath, is actually a very much textbook example of a case of Asperger's (which is in the Autism spectrum). A sociopath has a lack of empathy, but Sherlock, we progressively see that he does have empathy. You see, for people in the Autism Spectrum, it's not that they don't have feelings or that they lack empathy, but rather that they don't express it in the same way, and don't react as neurotypical people do. So we can safely say that Sherlock has empathy and is actually a rather caring person.

    I have three theories-
-Sherlock was misdiagnosed or mistakenly referred to as a sociopath as a child when he was actually just traumatized and othered and acting out
-Mycroft actually is a sociopath, really only able to form a bond with his brother but has very little empathy for others and Sherlock emulated him and his distaste for sentiment when he was young, believing he was the same way
-Or Sherlock fully knows he’s not a sociopath and uses it as an excuse for his bluntness, kind of like his preference for not having relationships though he was able to form something with the Woman. It’s a defense mechanism/way to keep people at a distance.

    • @KassieJane
      @KassieJane 3 года назад +10

I definitely think the sociopath thing is a defense mechanism, he's traumatized and may want to avoid getting close to people in fear of losing them. Then.. alas.. he lost Mary 😭
I imagine both Sherlock & Mycroft to be Autistic, but I do get kind of sociopathic vibes from Mycroft just as you described. Could be a comorbidity.

I think this is more likely, I almost doubt that he was aware of the euphemism, especially if he's autistic. If it was deliberate though, it was a joke and he was trying to make Molly laugh which is very soft and sweet 🥺

sherlock just committed murder in his own house, and the rest of scotland yard is just standing around like 'oop, glad that wasnt me getting absolutely destroyed-'
AND THEN AGAIN, IN THE SAME EPISODE:
sherlock: anderson, turn around, you're putting me off-
      anderson: wha- my f a c e is??-
      sherlock: y e s .
greg: [tired man sigh] just....turn around-
(greg's response is basically just "sorry bro, your self-esteem just isn't as important as solving the case, your sacrifice is valued tho❤️" istg-)
also, if you look at the background of that scene, anderson aCTUALLY TURNS AROUND, PFFT-

Can we all just acknowledge that the sign of three's ending is the saddest in the entire series not the reception, violin playing and dancing that's all sweet and wholesome... I'm talking about the very last shot of the episode when he leaves the wedding
To me that scene is ugly tragic for two reasons 1. It proves how lonely Sherlock feels even when all his friends and loved ones are in one place
And 2. he leaves the wedding early which was foreshadowed in the very beginning of the episode by Miss Hudson "I mean who leaves a wedding early, so sad"
Sign of three of my absolute favourite Sherlock episode of the entire series

    • @SP-ux9ep
      @SP-ux9ep 3 года назад +6

Same. That scene broke my heart like nothing else in the show. That day was supposed to be one of the best in his life, he had worked so hard on all the little details to make it perfect for Mary and John, and for someone like Sherlock who barely knows social gatherings that must've taken so much effort. It was heartbreaking to see the one person who was the most enthusiastic abt it all ending up like that. :( It's not just him feeling lonely, in that scene he actually WAS lonely - looking around at all of his friends and hoping someone would catch his eye (he even gets so happy seeing Janine noticing him, it's so sad) - I think his friends' should've made an effort to not let him feel alone/out of place, knowing this might possibly be the only party in his entire life and one that mattered so much.

People who’ve seen this show and say they don’t like Sherlock because he’s mean or annoying or a bad person did not understand the show. This show is a masterclass in having a character go through major growth without it feeling forced. His development is so beautiful and it warms my heart to see a formally closed off character finally have the love they deserve

    "This is family"
    "THATS WHY HE STAYS!"
look, whether you ship johnlock or not, sherlock jumping the friend title and considering John family just proves how much he loves John, romantic or otherwise. The fact that he says this in front of both John and Mycroft as well comes off as his own way of showing vulnerability in a way. Not only is he entrusting Mycroft with this fact about his emotions (which he is notoriously bad at showing) he is also reassuring and letting John know that he is the most important person in his life.

I totally see myself in Sherlock... Everyone says I'm a sociopathic, wired person and I have zero emotions... even my family members say I'm a robot with a steel heart.
But I feel everything inside and I won't think twice to give my life for the ones I care...
And I have a very soft spot for kids and animals... Because I find they're pure
I am 23yrs old autistic and my personality type is INTP-t... So BBC Sherlock is only similar character for me I've ever seen in my life...
