Sue COMCAST instead. They inflict direct damages to consumers in towns where they are the only Internet provider, where they charge $120 for famously unreliable connections with terrible customer service.

This! yes. My area had zero choice in their internet provider. Whomever had area dominance, that was your internet. You were not allowed to install another service provider and if you tried, that new provider declined saying they weren't authorized to service your community. I guess it's supposed to parse out the territory equitably but it should ALWAYS be the consumers choice as they will always choose the provider that balances between reliability and cost. I hated not having that choice and being forced to pay for a provider i didn't want.

The other companies said "OK" right away, and the biggest servers on Earth were built in 2010 in Utah to keep all this information. (that's the Obama admin) If a large company doesn't do what the govt wants, often the remedy is to declare the company a "monopoly" and to break it up. It depends on where the case is heard...it's too complicated for most ppl to understand....if it's heard in New York the govt wins, if it's heard in Mississippi, the company wins. The company is "punished" for defying the govt's secret orders by being broken up. (didn't anyone listen to E Snowden?) Democracy as a concept isn't actually quite that great at voicing the opinions of the people. It's just better than anything else we have, which is just sad at this point. The EU regulates its lobbying, which means big companies can't flex their muscles there, but when the same rules are introduced in the us, companies - you guessed it, lobby against it.

Keeping in mind lobbying is how politicians continue their careers after leaving office. The end goal is to get Google to "donate" to them or face regulation, fair or not. Keep in mind Microsoft didn't even spend money for lobbying until congress started meddling with their business. Do you really think it was about Netscape? If you think about it, nearly everyone is using Google's services, and most of the time, for free even. So I think it is just fair that they earn something out of their creation. Or are you saying someone else should earn out of Google's hard work? Also, I believe Bing and Yahoo hasn't kicked the bucket yet, and Google didn't do anything to stop people from using those. In fact, on a clean Windows 10 installation, the default search goes to Bing. So in fact, shouldn't Bing and MS be accused of monopoly for NOT giving the end user a choice on which search engine to use? Sure, you can change the default search engine, but only after going into settings, which NOT all people are tech savvy enough to do. It is fine for you perhaps and most of the current generation, but, collectively, it does not cover everyone to be able to choose. Google offered their services and did not stop others from doing the same.

While I agree that it is difficult to show direct harm to consumers, the larger problem is the censorship of ideas\content prioritization that big tech does. They decide what constitutes correct speech based on vague user guidelines then permit subsidiaries to take down content that doesn't support that moderator's political agendas. This is what makes the concept of hate speech so insidious: censorship of detestable speech/art will always enable special interest to start to dictate what is acceptable.
And by making their algorithm seek content that a viewer wants to see, they are making it far easier to stay within political/philosophic thought bubbles than at anytime in history. And then you have the issue of when searching for something, Google determines what is ultimately shown in the top list. This is a form of editorializing, as they decide the rank and relevance of the content to be shown. And since this is intrinsic to search , this one is particularly difficult to address.
The power this one company has on the whole world's access to information gives them the ability to steer everyone to their perspective by only showing content that supports their end. It is the same problem when granting the power of education to a single entity. Control access to education/information and you, in large part, control thought.
There is little wonder why they so willingly supported China's great firewall...

Anti-trust has nothing to do with "censorship". Also, it's not censorship; private companies, like anyone else, have an absolute and unlimited right to decide what content they want to host on their property. A property owner gets to decide what kind of billboards go up on his land next to the highway and a website owner gets to decide whose comments stay and whose get deleted. @@joegroft5944 The thing is what happens when other products are ..... sucky let's put it that way. I agree on one point of Google's CEO where lower quality products are being "promoted" because the laws deem you to have a product that the majority of people prefer. KInda like how one student excels in a class and has marks far ahead of the average but for the sake of maintaining the class morale, the teacher deliberately makes the excellent student's test harder than others.
The only other search engine I would say is on par is Microsoft edge, though it too is a product is a major monopoly company.
Though I would also say that monopolies can also stifle competition because when you are at the top, you want to REMAIN at the top. This is provided that you know that your potential competitors' products are on par or of even better quality.
That's what competition is about though, capitalism is about competition, at least in our current modern understanding. But you gotta balance that with fairness, which is a very difficult and complex thing to do.
In google's case, it is more what I said in the first paragraph.

What intrigues me is that no one is forcing users to use Google. This isn't like a monopoly on rail or air travel, like what's happened in the past. Or on ISP's or cell service providers.
It's not like the user has only 1 option of Google. Don't like YT? There is DailyMotion and Vimeo to name two. Don't like Google Search? There is Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and a *plethora* of others.
If you're arguing that Google places prevalence on its own products first, it could very well be that users are simply just using those products more, thus more popular, thus appearing first.
And finally, if you are going to discourage that type of behavior where the popularity of a product shouldn't be considered and all products must be treated equally, you're essentially creating socialism in the online search marketplace. Companies like Amazon, Walmart, etc. Already do this both online and in-store with their own products. Where are those lawsuits?

The only censoring they are doing is removing obviously fake and misleading facts or at the very least putting up a warning. This is similar to what twitter is doing with some of trumps tweets. They aren't censoring trump because of some agenda, they are flagging certain tweets of his because they are false, misleading, or inciting violence. The only reason that conservatives are getting hit with these flags and not liberals for the most part is because conservatives are the ones who are tweeting out all this misinformation.
