quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics are pretty much all predicated on these ideas. I just took the p-chem class and we used this math to justify our definition of entropy. The concept of entropy can also be defined as the multiplicity of a system. Which is just a fancy way of saying "how many possible ways a system can arrange itself". Anyway, that's my opinion after taking 1 course in statistical mechanics.
