It means that the probability of Sarah choosing Algebra is dependent on her choosing Biology too , hence it is detonated as P(A/B) and not P(A and B) .

So there is a 1/3,000 chance for a male calico cat. Then there is also a 1/3,000 chance that the male will be not be sterile. So is that a 1/9,000 chance for a fertile male calico?
I don't quite understand how her chance of choosing Algebra given that she picks Biology is a 0.40 chance... Based on your formula: P(A/B) = P(A and B) / P(B) Well, to get P(A and B) you need: P(A and B) = P(A/B) * P(B) Well, to get P(A/B) you need the first formula again. When it's presented this way I'm getting some circular logic where I can't do one thing without the other thing, but I can't do they other thing without doing the one thing first ad infinitum. If we weren't told from the beginning that the probability was 0.4 for A/B, I couldn't solve this with the information presented...
this class is important as general education to get at least a bachelor degree. I tell you, I had to do this Math to get my master. I am close to my retirement age, and I never needed to use exact probabilities. Only I have said looking at the sky... "Will probably rain". or "you probably will be fired"... dont pay attention to me. I am just elderly, but I am just saying. Saying that, here is the best explanation I have found for my kids.
Let's say I flipped a coin once and I want to calculate the probability of Heads and Tails occurring at the same time. Logically, I now P(H and T) = 0, But, according to the multiplication formula, P(H and T) = p(H). P(T) = 1/2 . 1/2 = 1/4. why is that?
Thank you so much for your videos! I am getting ready to take my content exam to teach and your videos help refresh my memory on all things probability!

we use the formula P(A and B) = P(A)*P(B) when the two events are independent but they are not independent in this case, so we use the formula P(A | B) = P(A and B)/P(B) and since we know two of these values from the start, we can calculate P(A and B) 0.40 = P(A and B)/0.70 --> P(A and B) = 0.40*0.70 = 0.28 if the events were independent, the P(A | B) should equal the P(A) as A occurring is unaffected by B occurring does this help at all??

That's what I got......the question a) didn't say anything about"given" a biology. I think it was an error
we use the formula P(A and B) = P(A)*P(B) when the two events are independent
but they are not independent in this case, so we use the formula
P(A | B) = P(A and B)/P(B)
and since we know two of these values from the start, we can calculate P(A and B)
0.40 = P(A and B)/0.70
--> P(A and B) = 0.40*0.70 = 0.28
if the events were independent, the P(A | B) should equal the P(A) as A occurring is unaffected by B occurring
