Plenty of empty condos and black market short term rentals. I guess the hotel industry lobbyist asked for a ban in Airbnb but played it like its going to help with the housing shortage.
Another option is to fly in from Calgary in the morning to attend a game then fly out at night

Vancouver isn't ready. We're welcoming Fifa when there's a housing crisis, short-term rentals have been practically criminalized and since disallowing most short-term rentals, hotel prices have shot up.

I hope they get Broadway Subway done before FIFA 2026. Unfortunately due to Surrey being indecisive the Expo Line Langley extension won’t be done till 2028 alongside the UBC-X line from Arbutus to UBC. We’re also behind on the Purple and Gold (Haistings & Willingdon/41st Ave) metro systems. The FEDS need to step up their investment on the west coast. We pay higher taxes to Trudeau and always get less.

@@Gluteus.Maximus As someone who relies on transit almost everyday, I agree! It's got some problems but honestly I am so grateful for the clean, safe, and efficient system we got here! :)

Why not use the money to give health care to legal Canadian citizens, who have drug issues and to house legal Canadian citizens who don’t have a place to live. Just a thought. Oh and don’t forget the climate issue, the world is going to end in 2 years, unless all the people flying buy extra carbon credits(so the planes won’t cause any carbon issues) and the climate issue will be better, or as Mr.Trudeau says, the climate will be gooder.

The "greenest" owelympics expanded a highway instead of improving existing rail to Whistler. Here we go again catering to corporate advertising & hosting a sport party: just send them the memo from June 15, 2011. We tend to riot over insignificant sporting outcomes. Let's not even bother mentioning FIFA corruption.

Does it really matter? First come first serve. Big money gets it. It's a business. Why should we care? Even if visitors complain, it will NOT hurt Vancouver's status as a favourite destination. And sorry for locals - blame your parents for having and raising you but then decided to throw you without much into the real world of Vancouver living.

It never used to be until Canada sold it's sole after Expo 86 and the floodgates of immigration began - as well as the real estate & housing costs Previous to Expo and the decay, Van was actually a pretty cool city with lots of incredible pockets and of course affordable. Now it's ranked #1 as the most expensive per sq. ft. real estate market in the world behind only Hong Kong. The problem persists still today and it has had a direct impact on the rise in homelessness, addiction, crime, and mental health. Van used to be nice, but you're 100% right, ti's turned into an absolute dump! I can't imagine what it's going to look like in 2 more years for FIFA but I know it's going to be way worse than it is currently. Van is the Los Angelos of Canada...all the addicts come here!
