Lining a Canoe: a simple solution to a river running problem.

- Lining is the term used in using rope to move a canoe downstream. This was part of a British Canoeing Leadership course and was looking at different solutions to river problems. Here we were avoiding a tree problem.
This is my first use of Final Cut Pro as an editing tool so I had chosen a quick and simple video to make.

When you watch this it is obvious the best thing to do, if you were in the canoe with no experience you would gun it and be in a load of trouble, thank you Ray, ps I found your channel via Paul Kirtley if you want to blag some commission, if it wasn't for your drunken tour of the spay I would not know of you, but that will change next year, I'm on the canoe skills course, I want to adventure, but I want to do it safely, and the Queen says you're the best,

Many thanks Richard. Appreciated. Yep the intention is to do a whole series and I already have a lot of the footage including advanced paddling on the Vyrnwy, Tryweryn and others. I went for this one because the content was simple and I wanted that to concentrate on starting to use Final Cut Pro. It was a hell of a move up from iMovie and has been hard for me. I am happy with the concept so hope to get the next out within a week featuring bigger more powerful situations. Keep well.

Another great topic, not pushing suggestion mind you, its always good to see new fresh information on the topic of canoes, Lining solo and steering the boat with the lines and current. I have the basics but a more insightful on the solo lining would make me smile. Not that this one didn't. Would you recommend a tactile mark on a lining rope, for example a meter or meter and half from the end? I'm preparing a new set of lining ropes for the winter, and I'll be using twisted rope this time, made out of jute-covered (for grip) polypropylene (for flotation) strands. I'm considering either a Matthew Walker knot or just some whipping for the mark, and a smoothly tapered backsplice on the end. Is it a good idea or should I stick to smooth, constant-width rope so that it can slip out of my hands unobstructed when something unforeseen happens? Thanks.

Normally this is so straightforward I wouldn't bother to video it. On this occasion there was a massive amount of branches and debris below water and so I took the opportunity to teach the clients an alternative method. Did I need to do it on this occasion? Well I would have happily have paddled it myself but sorry no video.
