How To Double The Engagement Points In A Hope Hub

- Of course it goes without saying that modifying any bike part is risky and you'll definitely void any warranty. As mentioned in the video a steel freehub body is highly recommended but even then please consider this a risky thing to do and you do so solely at your own risk.
Disclaimers done, I mentioned that the Hope hub on my fatbike was modified to give double the engagement points a few weeks ago and since then every video has had comments asking when I'd make the video showing how it's done.
Well the wait is over, Adam and I had some free time and we went to work not only showing the engagement mod but also how to double up the springs for a louder hub too.
Don't forget to enter both competitions, you can follow tartybikes instagram here: tartybikes...
Info on Adam's refugee bike event: photo?fbid=1...
As mentioned in the video, Tartybikes is a great place to get anything Trials related but don't be afraid to get in touch regarding any other bike related products too, they'd be happy to help, can do fast international shipping and I'd love to see them supported as Adam and the guys really are awesome people.

I have chosen a winner! There was lots of good suggestions but @Dan Sacco got in there early with a risqué (for my channel at least) slogan of "The best Trials riders shave their pawls!". I chose this one as it really did give me a genuine laugh :P
Dan there's no contact information on your page so could you please fire me a message on any of my social media channels and I'll get your postage information to send these pawls and springs your way :)
Thanks to everyone else who commented and joined in the fun!
Love this! I’ll never attempt to do it myself, but it’s given me a better understanding of how a hub works! 👍🏾
Finally! I waited for this ever since you announced it and I'm so hyped for this🚀
Always good to hear :)
You're great, guys! Lovely smart mod and very simple to be done. The performance doubes from the two shorten paws and maybe doubles again because of the extra springs. You just inspired me to take angle grinder and the caliper from the garage, well done! Thank you! Wouldn't mind to send me some extra paws and springs if I mess it up (hope not). Cheers!
Even though I won't be doing this mod, I feel vindicated for doubling up my springs to get more life out of my Stans 3.30 hubs. As much as I like the lightweight aluminium construction, they just don't last. So re-using spare parts, namely the springs, from various dead Stans hubs I can get better spring action. Also (if you have more springs like I do), they can be shoved behind the pawls to fill the space that opens up as the hub body wears. I love these in depth modfication videos, you guys are so creative and an amazing workshop at Tarty.
The video kinda gave me a nostalgia trip,I remembered when I was into trials. Ordering online from tartybikes , grinding the rims with an angle grinder, putting tar on your rims. The "TGS" times where Watson, Tunnicliffe and so were big. TRA also. The Beau memorial rides... I might need to get a trials bike again. It would be a shame if the sport dies out...
Keep it up!
Just done this to my pro 4 works a treat and sounds class
I've been waiting for this. I was staring for ages at your picture on the other video for ages but couldn't figure it out
Happy to be of service!
Excellent video. I gained quite a bit of insight about hub engagement.
“Make Hope hubs pro again”
cheers for the video Ali, if tarty sold this I can guarantee it would sell amazingly and I truly hope they do
"Dont Think, Just Engage!" Thats the slogan! Awesome video! Like this kind of diy bike stuff!
Hey Ali Clarkson! Nice precision hack! Lookin forward to the competition vid next week! Ride ride ride!
Was actually curious about this. Sounds mad in comparison to a stock Pro 4!
Yeah it’s noticeable!
If you want loud there's an easier way with less hub wear. ruclips.net/user/shortsTEu-m0wtAPI?feature=share please like and subscribe for more bike mechanic tips and tricks
great work on all fronts :}
it may be the case that doubling the springs on just two paws (long+short) would have the same effect of 'snapping' things into place but also keep the drag & wear to a minimum... (theoretically when one claw engages, it's pair should also lock in).
imo hubs, just like exhaust pipes, are fun when loud for short periods of time.
I did this a couple of months ago after someones off-hand comment in the pub about it being a possibility. can say its so much better, still on the alloy free hub - defo ordering a steel one now- its fairly easy to do with a vice and a file.
I use Tarty for MTB and BMX. Those guys sell super good quality stuff and I've only ever had good experiences with them.
that was crazy!thanks for this amazing content guys, super interesting
Enjoying this TartyTour!
Just did this on my Pro 4. Feels and sounds amazing.
I'm loving these vids Ali great tech vids that guys a guru what a legend
The Double Clicker, loving the single cog conversion
Nice video will be sharing with my bike gang so we can all be ruthless and loud down the trials.
“Pawls springs, make your hub sing”
Tartybikes is absolutely great and this video is too 👍
The spring trick works on most hubs not tryd the double engagement trick tho great vid :) thanks for sharing it :) looking forward to seeing some more street trials to :)
Pretty interesting. Definitely going to double up the Pawls and springs on my bontrager hub now.
You got a steel freehub on there? Because most of them are aluminium as far as I'm aware, and they clearly say that isn't advised.
Maybe not advised, but def still doable modding the alum driver, depending on both the weight of the rider and the load it’s put thru, if your were light or for the average person that rode about easy, it would be ok and it would still last a while modding the alum one, it would sit right where it should be between Alum/steel pros and cons.. I’d be interested to see if the average generic pawls work just as well compared to the factory hope ones.
This was a great video and explanation of how it all works 2!
Thx! Learning something new always good! Keep up the good job. 👍 👍👍.
Looking forward to that BMX build!
Great info guys i have stretched the springs which work well also . To reduce rolling drag i every paper the id of the green seal to make it thinner with a biggger hole rolls way faster i will definately give this a go i,m what i call a hard xc trials rider emagine moto hard enduro on a mtb , and have brocken a few pauls and stripped a pro 4 drive gear and i do run the steel ones hope have been great with warranties , thanks again makes total sense .
Amazing Mod! I call it „Hope goes quick and dirty“.
I've been waiting for this since you teased it!
I think you would just simply call it "Hope Pro 4 Pro" as a tongue-in-cheek name. I would love to buy a Hope Pro 4 Pro Professional Mod Kit.
Good video gents .
Tarty bikes il be in contact soon regarding a rear hub for my bmx race bike
Quality video, well explained 👏. Don't think I'll be trying it though. I wouldn't have a HOPE in hell of it going right 😝
Would be interesting to see what a profile elite would sound like with this mod!
Like 100 been waiting for this
Running a Profile Elite on my BMX has 204 POE, it's bonkers! Then I started seeing this mod mentioned on a few Trials Riders videos. Definitely interested to see what this is all about!
Edit: This is definitely a very clever idea, taking from the newer Hubs design to update the older hubs. Can definitely see why this is a try this at your own risk/not at all haha.
Part of me gets a bit nostalgic thinking about bikes BITD when you could modify your bike to pretty much whatever you wanted but of course now bike parts are made from lessons learned & you don't really need to do any heavier modifications to your bike anymore.
Now you're dropping hints about a BMX too Ali! I'm absolutely in for this!! Im guessing a street bike with everything you do on the Trials Bike, gunna be interested to see what you come up with!
Good engagement points in this video! Cool
Amazing video and explanation. Thx
That click is the click of an alarm clock bomb from cartoons when I was a kid!
Great video ! Slogan “Engage” 🚴♂️
"Here at TartyBikes we bring Hope back 4 Pros"
I still think Hope has the best hub sound. Ideally they would make a high engagement boost hub. The fact that this video was so anticipated proves that there's market demand for such a thing. The closest price competitive hubs I've found are Spank's Hex Drives. Call me insane but I'd still take the modified Hope as long as I could find a steel body that matches my prospective cassette.
Some of the best sounding hubs I've ever heard were a Ringlé from back in the day and even more so a DT Swiss from back in the day.
Crispy as hell.
Look at Arc 6 pawl 117 POE. Soo cheap, soo good. I use them for 2 years and no problem.
In my opinion, hope makes some of the best hugs, but if they build hubs, Wich had more clicks, it would be awesome, or at least a easy tuning opportunity like bontrager!
@@mickenoss oh wow that makes me feel old thinking back to the days when ringle first came out, can you remember cooks bro, Paul and real engineering as well, I used to look at those and think how many hours I’d have to work on my huge wage of £2.01p an hour to be able to afford them
@@davebryan1890 I remember Cook Bros, not so much the other 2.
£2.01 lol, I remember starting at 89p an hour. 🤣
Hi Ali, commenting on a year-old video but I wanted to give you credit for this solid modification. ❤ Engaging half the pawls at a time, __symmetrically__, is so much more sound than the way I9 do it, with gradual engagement as the hub and axle flex. Hope axles don't have a reputation for snapping, unlike the ones from North Carolina that depend on flexing an aluminium axle to get those points of engagement.
Fantastico rimarrei ore in ufficiale ad imparare e guardare complimenti 🤟🖐👏👏👏
Pro 5 just been released can’t wait to get 1. Better seals better springs and 6 pawls. Probably not gonna buy a i9 hydra now and stick with hope
I love these types of videos. I use double springs and love it.
slogan: we hope it works :), great video whilst I'm a mtb/djer game me a greater understanding of hubs, cheers lads
OMG... I CANNOT believe Master Adam hand-held an angle grinder for that job. LEGENDARY!! lol
Engagements cant find them ? grind them ! awesome little tech tips like this are always fun to watch :)
Not connected to the video just wanted to tell you that you Inspired me to finally order a trials bike, I’ve wanted one for a long time and watching your videos made me realize it was time to order one. I ordered a Inspired Fourplay Pro and am expecting it next week.😃
That’s actually amazing! Thanks for letting me know…I hope you have an absolute blast on it! 😁🤘🏻
i literally have 0 need to do this, but i sure WANT to do it now :)
Very informative video!…thanks for sharing!…😎
Great stuff ali
what are your thoughts on the double toothed pawls inside bmx hubs like a colony wasp or some profile hubs? what is your general opinion on profile hubs?
Love the techie videos Ali....
I love these tweeks! "Hub Nerds"
Definitely going to do this dispite the disclaimers as I’m sure most people watching will want to do haha! I’d calm the the product “hope pro pawls”
Good to know its something we always do ourselves so might end up on one the enduros for a test
Can you still get the old style leaf springs (bigger) , or put 2 leaf springs behind each pawl :)
Gotta love the angle grinder technique, especially when there's a mill sitting right there. I suppose the grinder is quick with zero setup but If your are gonna do a few and want them accurate the mill is the way to go.
Those pawls are usually hardened and tempered too. One more reason to use the grinder.
@@rogeriocosta1035 carbide will still easily go through them.
@@Savagetechie Sure! You just need a good setup to hold such small hardened parts to cut them without caching and breaking the tool (or making a dent on the wise etc).
Like you said before, It depends on the quantity.
This demo is relatable to most of the audience. I have all the tools necessary in my garage.
@@rogeriocosta1035
By the discoloration you can see after grinding, he's annealed the steel making it SOFTER. Not 'ideal'.
Im a retired machinist. I'd machine new pawls from tool steel, THEN properly harden them. Thats the proper way. To best control heat on such a tiny piece of metal , you'd best use a temp controlled oven. Not a kitchen oven!!
None of this is rocket science. This guy's a hack.
At the VERY LEAST, grind and quench in water to avoid annealing. We always keep a bucket of water next to our bench grinders. Precision grinders use flood coolant as well.
we edit the hubs for only changing the spring but some do remove the grease which makes alot faster to wear out.
Those who remove lube from hub drivers, 😂(just to make them noisier) lack common sense. They'll get noisy alright. Then make no noise at all!
Its their own hub to trash. They paid for it. Haha.
Its 'job security' for us mechanics and pro wheel builders.
cant wait to see a bmx video ;)
More interested in fitting a trials hub on a boost frame. Any suggestions?
Pop the pawl in a wee set of vice grips👌👍 save your digits. Most interesting, hub modification coming right up
Thanks Ali!! Makes me want a hope hub on my mod even more. What's the advantages over a freewheel?!
Cassette hubs will have a much stronger axle, which is supported by 4 bearings.
A freewheel hub has two bearings and the drive-side end of the axle extends way out past the DS bearing. This increases the bending moment upon the axle.
I havent broken an axle on an SS wheel yet, not that Ive really tried. My White Industry axle is 15mm steel though. Pretty big and strong.
Would there be any benefit to just doubling up on the springs and leaving the pawls?
Love this
I have a steel freehub... I may have to do this!
Hey, Algorithm, Bluey and I had a great ride today, fantastic weather and 2234 feet of climbing, but we found a newly-opened cafe with millionaire shortbread to die for!
How about get your pawls on these for a slogan. great video as always keep up the good work
Double the engagement, double the fun
LOUD AND PROUD
Love the bike hacking with Adam!! This is the "Hope and Roll the Dice" mod. Due to the voided warranty and minor risk,
'voided warranty and minor risk' sounds very american
@@cliveramsbotty6077 hmm, I did not know that was stereotypical American. 😂 I like F1, Rally, the metric system, not going bankrupt due to medical costs, and trials.
As a US aerospace machinist, I dont approve. After he grinds the pawls, by the discoloration I can see he's annealed the steel pawl. That makes the steel softer! Not ideal.
Wow. I would love to have that Hope Pro4 Plus. 🤭
Can I do it with other hubs? For example ns rotary.
Great video Ali! Is it still strong enough for trials use? A lot of people have problems with their i9 hub with mini pawls as well. Thats why I ask. :)
Pretty much ends up the same as their trials hub which only has two pawls engaging at a time so yeah it’s fine for trials 👍🏻
@@Ali_Clarkson so whats the difference between this and their trials hub?
@@nathananson5445 Adam might have to correct me here but I think the trials freehub body has two pawl pockets machined slightly offset to give the same result as two pawls being physically shorter.
This mod isn’t needed if you already have the trials hub, it’s more for people who have the standard pro2/4 and want more EPs (in my case I couldn’t find a Fatbike hub with a decent number of EPs so this mod allowed me to double the number in the Hope fat hub)
So hope pro 4 trials is already 2 pawls at a time? Thought yours sounds like way more clicks then mine :D Thanks Ali!
I found this educational on how hubs work.
Which hope hubs are best for Cross, pro 4 or RS4
I "hope" to see more of this kind of content.
would recomend doing this with a grinder. As the metal turns blue I think it gets to hot and has a negativ affect of the hardnes of the material.
I thought that this was a mod you did yourself off camera in your fat bike build video.
For some reason I thought that one pair of the teeth would be ground down completely/ taken out so only one remains.
Interesting stuff.
Also; do the lads ship world wide?
Tarty will ship anywhere yep - over 85 countries so far, and counting...
Since the fulcrum location stays the same, and the pawl is shortened by more than 10%, wouldn’t the tip angle need to be different than the stock length pawls?
Correct!
You can call it The Adder mod. Made by Adam your adding engagement points the snake reference as well.
aPAWlingly quick engagement!
Good good 😁
New Hope Pawls! Put them on your hub if you have the bawlls
is there any way to tell whether I have the steel or aluminium freehub body?
Magnets 😁
So you’re doubling the number of clicks per revolution, but halving the number of pawls engaged at one time from 4 to 2? Kinda tricky, if you dont grind the pawls to the exact same length you could end up with only one engagement point… but sounds cool! 😁
By the discoloration in the pawl after grinding that I can see, hes overheated and cooked the temper out of the steel, making it softer when it needs to be quite hard. Not exactly ideal!
Maybe thats why he doesn't recommend this!
A jig would take much of the sudden lethality out of the equation.
Brilliant idea with doubling the springs! Being not that smart as Adam, I've tried to bend springs to make them more powerful.
Hope X2 mod “Twice the engagement, Twice as loud” 🚴💪
Can we buy them cut down from tarty ???
My slogan would be “Tarty Snazzy Snappers”
Cute! Showing us how to do something we shouldn’t do!
Slogan for the giveaway :
With our new pawls and springs modifications, there is HOPE for better 😁!
Nope, he annealed the steel by overheating it. You can see the discoloration. That makes the steel softer!
So, if two short pawls and double springs was a product tv advert what would the slogan be? Best one wins the springs and pawls we made/used in this video 😁🤘🏻
The best Trials riders shave their pawls!
Less is more, shave your pawls and gain on crawls 🤘🏽😂
Slogan for the giveaway :
With our new pawls and springs modifications, there is HOPE for better 😁!
Double the engagement, double the pawsibilities!
double the engagements, double the hope
This is a nice mod, would like them on mine. "Hope Rattlesnake 🐍 mod" 👍
Exactly what I was thinking....rattlesnake 🐍lol
That's preety clever.
Let's play a drinking game, drink everytime someone says "pawl" 😁
“Sometimes you want four at one time and sometimes you want two at seperate times. The best part is it’s up to you.”
Bike Wizardry!!!
Twice the hope of engagement!
I've got work tomorrow at the bike shop where I have access to an angle grinder, I'll see how it goes 😈
Let us know how you get on!
@@thetart20 it worked and sounds amazing especially as I've already double springed it
