  • I love getting questions in my DMs but sadly I can't answer them all especially if it's questions that keep on being repeated. One of the most frequent is from people who are a little unsure whether they want to splash out on a dedicated trials bike and want to know if a dirt jump bike would work instead.
    So let's find out!
    The Cute Thief collected a host of DJ and street trials parts and a suitable frame. For a change I decided to make it stand out a little more with a home spray job and I'm so pleased with the results!
    I don't yet find out how capable it is for trials but better believe I've got a serious test for it coming up soon!
    What do you think?
    See you next week!

    There’s such a unique charm to all your build videos, and whether or not you go to the effort of making a rigid script they’re always seamless as well. Might be my favorite bike content to watch tbh

    that is a super sexy paint job and build dude, love it! not sure if someone has already suggested it but you should get yourself some chain half links, they can help dial in your chain length to fit in the dropouts better. BMX companies like shadow conspiracy make them, get the cute thief on the case :)

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  2 года назад +1

      Glad you like it! I thought half links would come up…they’re kinda ok for BMX or bikes that don’t have high torques but trials is extremely tough on chains and the design of a half link chain with the curved links just doesn’t work…they end up being straightened out and stretch so much you have to constantly adjust the tension and they eventually snap

  • @ironeinar

    That's definitely one of the sickest bikes I've ever seen! Love the idea of doing this dirt-trial crossover. If it is controllable, then this would actually be the perfect bike for my style of riding. And I love the colour, it just fits 👍

    I run a half-link chain on my DJ bike (a 3/32" Gusset SLink) so I can avoid running a tensioner but still get the wheel as far forward as possible. They're not compatible with thick/thin chainrings though. Sick paint job BTW 🙂

      @@Ali_Clarkson That's good to know, I've been thinking of trying out a trials conversion on it (i.e lower gearing, longer stem). • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  2 года назад +1

      Unfortunately half link chains aren’t as strong as regular chains and they don’t cope with trials, because we use such a light gear ratio there’s so much torque created that the curved plates actually straighten out, this makes the chain stretch so much that it needs constant adjustment and eventual failure…I wouldn’t even want to use a single half link for trials

      Nothing too complicated about it, you might not always be able to get 100% pad coverage but as long as you’re hitting 90% or so you should be fine. Just make sure you’re using tugs to keep the wheel in place or big bolts, if you’re not using a trials gear ratio bolts should be enough to hold it

Expect if you give it the proper amount of time to cure that'd be a paint job that would last well, glad you're being patient and giving it time ;-)
    Since you gave the little rotor tip (thanks BTW, will try it), I thought I'd give a tip of my own - the rear tyre is on backwards, easy to tell with Maxxis as the actual tyre name, is only on the drive side of their tyres, unless of course you thought it might work better that way. Honestly with the Aggressor, I was a bit puzzled when I mounted my first one as well and thought maybe it should go like you have it as well.

      Yup, you made a hard call that turned out awesome. Love that you can take a bit of honest critique/different opinion, without getting offensive like a lot of the modern kids.
      If you actually study the knobs pattern carefully, it is in fact designed for max climbing grip, all the "paddles" with square edges are oriented that way (took a 2nd look at mine carefully this weekend), so if you wanted better braking traction, flipping it should help with that - gets quite squirmy under hard braking on loose.

    Such a cool bike and video, man!
    A couple of questions: have you thought about putting in a half-link chain so that the wheel can be pushed closer (now it's very far away, even dirt jumpers don't ride like that)?
    And also, didn’t you think that it’s still more expedient to put a smaller star in the back (or a larger one in front), because with such a ratio of stars 22-18 you will never accelerate enough to jump on the dirts?
    Cheers from Ukraine!

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  2 года назад

      Glad you like it :) that’s great ratio is the same I use on my Hex Street Trials bike so if I want to test this bike as a trials bike it really needs to run the same ratio…I’m not riding this on dirt jumps but even if I did most places have rollers and you can pump for speed.
      As for a half link chain, unfortunately they’re just not strong enough for trials riding :(
