100% agree. Because of these men and others in their generation playing it “straight” and doing a masterful job of it, many thousands were drawn into the bluegrass fold. They have the sound that is infectious to virgin ears to the music. The “newgrass” sound and the melodic banjo sound which was being born at this same time did not have the same contagious, toe tapping appeal to the new listener just being exposed to bluegrass for the first time.
It is the music THESE men played that recruited many a new musician to the family of a bluegrass. And make no mistake, this IS a family. It is the “biggest small” group of people you’ll ever meet. After being in Bluegrass avidly for around ten years and making all the festival rounds, you’ll have met or stood next to nearly everyone, even the headliner stars. Name another kind of music where you can do that!
