Cheap horsepower for your 7.3L Godzilla Ford!! And Mountain Biking!

- This was a fun one! Mountain Bike riding in the morning then we head over to run my 2020 Ford F-350 on the dyno to see what kind of power the 7.3 Godzilla Gas engine puts down. Then, back to The Dirthead Shed for mods. I replace the stock resonator and muffler with parts from Flowmaster , Thrush, and Dynomax. Then it's back to the dyno shop to see if we made power, or lost power. Watch and see the results!

+49 ft lbs for an afternoon of work and some random exhaust pieces kicking around is no joke, you'll be able to feel that while driving it around!
Right! Thats the best kind of mod
That's 100% butt dyno approved!
No you won't.
@@ShainAndrews you're a dog, what do you know?
Resonators are the cheat code for a drone-free exhaust. My car has four resonators and no mufflers. She screams at WOT but I barely hear it on the highway.
They definitely keep some of the bad frequencies down
Every weekend morning, I look for a Dave video to watch, to inspire me to get out into the garage.
Get to the garage. Weekend is almost over!
I love this channel is crossing over to dirtbikes and mountain biking. Exercise is important and everything with wheels is fun!
I agree with you
I'm 51 and (for me) the diet has been key. Staying active (exercise) also helps but the diet as you age can be a larger factor. But with that said everyone is different. You'll figure it out. Good stuff Dave, have a good weekend. Like button enabled and video watched in its entirety for the 100K milestone.
Thanks so much
I have to agree with the eating good, I'm 31 and trying to eat as clean as possible, in the day to day its small increments but noticeable after a while.
65. When you stop eating all the junk. Junk like all those delicious baked goods your wife makes and ice cream. That makes a huge difference.
Gave up the junk started walking. A little at a time. Two miles 3 or 4 times a week. Dropped 30 lbs in 4 months. No other exercise. Kept eating what I was eating already. Gave up the cakes, cookies, pies and ice cream.
So good on you for taking interest in your health.
Just remember it takes time, keep at it and it will come. Get a goal and a plan to achieve that goal. And diet goes hand in hand with the exercise. If diet is crap you will look like crap. I came back after spending two months in a hospital bed, losing over 50lbs of muscle and have to learn how to walk again. But with heart and dedication I was able to compete in my very first bodybuilding show a year-to-date after getting shot. It goes the same with someone just trying to get back into shape. Keep at it buddy.
That’s is great! Sounds like all moves in the right direction
It just goes to show, that junk will do the job when talent is added to the equation. Good job. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching
You're a Man after My own heart Dave...My neighbors love My constant exhaust modifications on every new vehicle I own
I’m sure they do
Those trails are awesome! Beautiful in the spring time
Bikes and HP. Sounds like a good day to me! 👍🏻
Not a bad day at all
That scenery is incredible. Trail looks fun too. Trails don't always need to be hard to be fun!
I always learn a new trick i hadnt thought of watching your videos. Using the wrench to bell the exhaust is genius. I never have good luck with those tailpipe expander tools anyway.
Channel lock pliers work great for it
Very nice! Love the perfect amount of sound too!
Great stuff Dave! 100k all the way.
We’re reeling it in
Dude!! Great video!!! Exhaust is always the funnest part of hot rodding!!! Nice job!!!✌️
I agree. Pretty instant gratification
Love to see you mixing it up, David! Keep it up, man.
That video stabilization made that downhill exhilarating!!! Keep the hits rolling!
GoPro is winning me back a little at a time
Buddy ran 3 glasspacks on his truck. Sounded deep but pretty quiet all free flow.
I have done that before. Sounds good
Dude sounds good 👍🏻. Keep up on the bike you will be back at it in no time! Rad video as always Dave 👊🏻👊🏻
Thanks so much
Dang that’s a sweet gain for torque! I love the sound of my truck, and I don’t want it to be much louder than stock, but y’all are tempting me!
It didn’t get very loud..
Dave, how did you not start and listen to the truck at every stage? Cut off, "resonator", then final.
FYI turbos make pretty good mufflers 😂
Haha. I thought about it for sure. But it was so sketch on the lift I didn’t want to chance it
Keep up the great work Dave! always enjoy watching all your adventures and projects! dont ignore your health and always stay active! oh and eat healthy to lol im 39 and have had 3 back surgerys from a work accident. i do my best to eat healthy and stay active so i can do all the things i enjoy! your a Rad dude! and it was awesome to meet you last year at EJS‼️🤘
Back injury doesn’t sound like a good time at all. Keep doing what you’re doing !
Free upgrades that actually give you more horsepower heck yeah! That's rad!
Win win
Nice sounding exhaust Dave! I was winded just watching you ride.....guess I should get my Haro mountain bike out and ride some too. You got good taste in cars, trucks, and bikes. Keep up the rad videos.
Thanks! Get the bike out
Thanks for another great vid! Truck sounds alot better without that restrictive exhaust and you got gains. Woohoo!!!!
Win win
Man, you are all over the place with this video and it’s great! I recently ditched the stock muffler on my f150 for a magnaflow and it sounds great. Not terribly loud but more rumble. I left the stock resonator on because I’ve made the mistake of removing them in the past and ended up with a horrible droning on the highway. Now after looking inside of the one on your truck, i wonder if i should lose the stock resonator and go with something less restrictive. I guess theres only one way to find out! I’m jealous of the great mountain bike trails you have too. I’m just trying to get out and hike more since we don’t have many bike trails.
Really sounds good and I like how clean the pickup is
It’s pretty clean. Time to get under there and fluid film it again
Great video Dave ,
Thank you
I gotta say Dave. You seem much more confident on your mountain bike than your DRZ. I know the DRZ is porky. But you really can it the corners and the brakes just as hard on that as your mountain bike. I love your channel. Keep up the great content. You are one hell of a fabricator. Thank you for being you and sharing it!
My goal is to have fun and try not to get hurt.. I’ll never be the fastest
Dave, you are the man. I was on fence to do an exhaust on my Godzilla 250. After this it’s definitely happening. Keep up good work. Cheers brotha
Right on. Hope you dig it
Awesome video Dave!!
Glad you liked it
Great work, man.
Sounds good from here
I’m just glad it’s not super loud
Awesome video Dave
Thanks Mark
Great episode Dave!
Thanks. Glad you liked it
A lot of good gains can be made with exhaust for pretty chap. Nicely done! I've learned how important headers and exhaust setup are a lot on Engine Masters.
That’s a great show
Man, I needed this video today. Definitely need to get back on the bike too.
It’s good , relatively inexpensive fun
That was fun to watch thanks for posting this up
Glad you liked it
Watching this video this morning and Dave says he wants to get in better shape.
I feel ya Dave, I do too. As I sit on the couch watching you exercise with a donut and cup of coffee ….
I’m going to get donuts this morning too
Nice gain in HP and Torque on cat back mod. Not only that, you just used extra parts laying around in your shop👍. The gain is enough not to notice any decrease of gas mileage when you are using your A/C. Excellent overall outcome👍. Any form of exercise is good for anybody. Good for you. I don't ride bikes anymore (71 yrs old) because of health issue but when I was younger, I used to ride 150 miles a week on a road bike. Here in Las Vegas, there's no such thing as flat road so it's a work out. Anyway, all the best wishes on your exercise program and keep the vlog coming.
Oh man. Those had to be good days on the bike
Sweet video! Thanks Dave
Thanks for watching
Love the content Dave!
Thank you
That Flowmaster 250300Y is about the best y-pipe for the money. I used a 300400Y from the header collectors on my old pickup and used a 4" diesel exhaust system to finish off my small block k2500 truck.
Cool
You should tune it. You’d love it!!! I’ve got a 21 E350 super duty cutaway with a KUV body on mine. Bought an Sct tuner and went to 5 Star Tuning for 2 different tunes. Josh Newman is the man!!! My truck runs soooo much better than factory!!! Got a 87 Daily tow and a 93 daily tow - big difference between the two. Love both but I get better mileage with the 87. Can return to factory if it needs to go back to the dealership. My horse power, torque and fuel mileage all increased drastically not to mention my speed limiter is gone😊. Food for thought.
I keep hearing the 5 star is where it’s at
Florence, SC
I second 5Star. I run an 87 performance tune daily on my Tremor since I rarely tow. Removed the accelerator delay, shifts through all 10 gears, and should’ve added about 36hp. Had the tune about 18000 miles no issues.
It was rad to see you mountain biking. I don't go 4 wheeling but I do mountain bike. 😁
Right on…. I just ordered up a new bike, excited to give it a rip. In a week
Not gonna lie the intro gets me fucking hyped for the video every time. Beware of darkness ftw
Heck yeah!
Really enjoyed your latest! Thanks for takin us along!
Thanks for watching!
Good work dave
Thanks!
Nice ! Free hp and torque!
It worked out well!
Cool biking! You ride beacon much? My favorite run at Beacon is up on Carousel like you did then cut over to the top of the downhill course on upchuck and go down Stalingrab and back to the lot. Super fun. Love going over to Esmeralda and back too when I’m not feeling lazy 😂 Hope to see you on the trails some time, I’ll give you a beer!🤘🏻
Nice. The ride you mention is what I did yesterday
"I'm already out of breath and I just left the parking lot" 🤣🤣 Same my friend. Same! You could prob buy a drone to follow you on the trails to get vids of you riding!
That would be cool footage
Stoked to see the mountain biking! Great "action" video, but ride it dont slide it! 🤣
Pro tip
I play disc golf at Sekani all the time, bad ass bike trails out there!
Right on. There were a bunch of people out yesterday
Man, it's so beautiful where you live!😊
Nice Torque gain. Should be able to feel that. ;-)
Excited to put some miles on it
Have you seen the flexible extensions to put on the weld tip? Makes welding on the top of exhaust pipe more simple.
When I had an exhaust shop I had a profax flex head gun. It was kind of gimmicky. Didn’t use it very often
Just discovered your RUclips channel from the new roadkill garage episode! Been missing dirt everyday. Glad you mentioned your channel!
Right on. Welcome!
Thank you, glad you have a channel. I watch a whole lot of RUclips! I have been binge watching your episodes all day.👍😁
Much appreciated. Tell your buddies to subscribe too. I need to make this into a real gig
Will do!
Good to know. I've got a 22 F250 7.3 with 4:30 gears and the 10 speed that I absolutely love. I'm ready to start modifying it and this video helped push me to do it.
From what I've seen out of the 7.3s with a 10 speed stock should be upper 340s to lower 360s on the horsepower.
I think that is crank hp. Not to the wheels.. but I could be wrong. Have not investigated mucb
Having the DRW likely saps some power from what others may post up with their respective dyno sheets. The transmission may be different as well. All 7.3's might have the same, but being a 350 DRW I wonder if they gave it the same internals as the 6.7 trans.
@@ALMX5DP they offer a detuned version in some models like the motorhomes. I'm not sure what else. All the others should have 430hp/475ft lbs at the crank.
@@jerryfoley8857 sure, I was just suggesting that being a 3500 DRW might show less power and torque making it to the rear wheels than others who post dynos up of a SRW 2500.
@@ALMX5DP This is probably right, especially on an inertial dyno. Another set of drive axle tires take more power to get up to speed.
I love mountain biking!
Me too
My daily is a 03 f1504x4 with a 01 lighting motor. It’s a great truck. Super clean and holds a ton of mtb🎉 come hammer Colorado Dave. 😅 nice trail.
Right on. I need to get to Colorado more often
I would totally ride Slick Rock Bike trail with you in Moab, during EJS next year if your there again. Good times... I used to work at Spoke and Sport on Division years ago. I don't even know if it's there anymore. Haven't lived in Spokane in years.
I’ll bring the bike next time
Great video
Thank you
Nice dyno pulls
Pretty cool getting to test the mods
Good gains!! Now to get an 87 octane tune and intake. Get rid of the speed limiter, manual lock it in 7th during the next dyno tune, you’ll be surprised how much more jam it will have!!
One thing at a time. I need to get my Nissan on the road
Nice work! I need one of those metal glue guns. :)
It's probably overkill but whenever combining pipes, I'll figure out the area of the two, then make the outlet as big or slightly bigger.
Two 2.5 is 9.1 square inches. Single 3 is 7 sq inches, single 3.5 is 9.6 sq inches.
Watching Dave load a mountain bike in the back of the tow rig reminded me of the Rockcrawlin' Bike Haulin' Monster Van from DED! Dave, is this the same location where you shot the episode of you riding your DRZ400?
Same bike as the DED video. The location is different between the dirt bike video and this one
Cool your mtbing too.
I’m into both.
Mountain biking, and playing with old trucks.
My observation is most folks are into one of the other. Not both so much.
That is true. It’s not a real big overlap
Anytime you want to check out Riverside State Park on the MTB, let me know - I've ridden there for years! 😉
I need to check it out
That’s cool, it’s exhaust day. I literally just got done putting a flowmaster exhaust on my truck then I see your video today. 😂😂
Right on. Turn out nice?
@@thedirtheadshed it sounds good but I think I might do like yours and add a glass pack in front to mellow out the drone. Does yours drone on the highway?
No. It’s quiet
I love that Hard-body
It’s a good one!
Love this video
Glad you enjoyed!
Those dynomax muffflers are so underrated, everyone wants a magaflow or flow master it seams like. I had an exhaust shop and would always recommend those. Did you get any droning with the new set up? Thanks for the great video.
They are good. They just don’t have a real pronounced sound like a flowmaster. I personally really like the sound of the really cheap thrush turbo mufflers
good job
Thanks. Fun , fast, and cheap
*heavy breathing* HAHA Loved it.
Nice! I wonder what kind of power this 7.3 with headers and programmer would bring to the table.
40 pound feet of torque only with better flow👍
I was blown away at that number
Mountain bikes are the best!
So good. More of that really soon
Those MTB trails look amazing. I live in the northeast so all my riding is very chunky haha
I’m sure you have some rad trails
Should totally do a Tremor front bumper valance. Bolts right on and only costs a few bucks and makes the truck look so much better
Been on my list a while now
Get back in shape. It makes riding your dirtbike better too. Especially getting your core strong. I was wondering how long it would take before you started playing with the dually..lol.
I’m not gonna do much with it…
I really want to uncork my 5.0 a bit but I think F-150s have pretty straight through mufflers already. That and I don’t want too much sound when towing, especially for a sustained mountain grade. Kinda like the silent exhaust for that situation (or decel on the way down).
I totally get that
COOL results for minor upgrade. What's next?
Clean and fluid film under there to keep the rust away
My buddy has a 7.3 and he had the throttle cable bracket come loose and cause some issues, may wanna look at that. There also is a sport mode he found, you would have to look that up on how to switch it but it made a big difference.
I’ve heard the sand/snow mode wakes it up
Double tap the traction control button fast to activate sport mode then hold it down to shut off the advanced track completely and you will see what its got.
Try gutting the muffler or the resonator and put it in place of the glass pack. If the expansion area has enough volume, the exhaust may act as if you cut it off at the cats and still be quiet. This assumes the collector and stock tubing back affects the power negatively by creating a super long collector.
Huh?
Dave: You made a super amount of power for using parts you already had and you didn’t ruin the sound. A kit probably wouldn’t do any better. Hopefully, it doesn’t drone. It is possible that there is a little more power to be had. The collector/secondary length tuning is the place to concentrate on in a purpose built exhaust; however, that wouldn’t suit your stated goals (cost, messing with cats) Perhaps cutting the exhaust after the cats and putting a turn down would be the next best thing and would make slightly more power than your setup. That would be cheap, but it would suck. What I was trying to say was a homemade expansion chamber in place of the glass pack you installed, would make the exhaust act like it was cut off at the cats without fumes, would keep your sound and would still be cheap. v/r wh
You missed the obligatory straight pipe rev after you cut the resonator off. I like to start and rev it after welding each piece. . Y pipe.. mufflers.. and tailpipe.
This thing was so sketchy on the lift I just wanted to get it done
Love your videos Dave! How can a guy purchase one of those dirthead t-shirts?
Pretty soon. Working on a site and inventory now
I currently have a 2016 F150 5.0 Supercab 8’ bed and the heavy duty payload package. It’s been a great truck but I often find myself towing more than 10k pounds these days and a newer F350 SRW with the 7.3 Godzilla is my ideal choice. Diesel would be fun but too expensive to maintain in my opinion if it’s not making you money.
I agree. The diesel definitely has its place. But the cost is so high
Dude, I use ride my bike everywhere when I was a kid. As an adult, trying to keep up with my kid now is like nothing before. My legs are always dead.
I know the feeling
Decent gains from shop clutter.
That's why I don't get rid of stuff either. Cuz ya neva kno...
Tripping over horsepower
Next time, use the Manual gear mode (M) to hold the gears instead of the Drive mode(D). Nice gains!
I’ll definitely have a better idea of what I’m doing!
Where’s that trail at, looks so great.
Beacon hill. Spokane
RAD!!! time to get a Carli Suspension system for it.
That would be nice
Next time you’re out at Beacon let me know. That’s my home trail system and I can show you around.
Right on. Thanks
Great video btw!
When on the dyno would it not work in manual mode? Not that it matters. Love the videos!
It probably would.
Dave, where's your spandex? :) I'm feeling you on the not wanting to be out of shape any more. I used to bike as well and I've lost a lot since then, granted, that was in my 20's. I turned 40 this year. Still got the bike, but trying to get out now is much more of a challenge. That trail is awesome. Those flowers are amazing.
Was the transmission in drive or manual mode on the dyno? In my car I can floor it in manual mode and it won't downshift. It will upshift once I hit redline. Not sure if your truck is different. Also, you could try to disable the kick down switch to get the throttle pedal to WOT without forcing a down shift.
For that front Y piece on the stock exhaust do you think they made the path for the upper tube longer to try and make the exhaust equal length between the engine banks? Looks like the upper tube goes to the passenger side bank and is shorter overall in front of the stock merge point.
Stock exhaust is interesting to dissect because you gotta figure Ford engineering measured the frequency response of the truck and then designed and revised the exhaust system to cancel the "offensive" or resonant frequencies. In automotive cost is really important, so everything you see has been cost optimized from the initial prototypes. A company like Ford has a dedicated "Value Engineering" team to take existing designs and shave cents off them.
That’s a lot of good input. I’m sure the exhaust was done that way for balance and cost as well. Get back on your bike this weekend
..... the STEVES and David are all EFI crazy Engine Masters .. that 7.3 would make a great ENGINE MASTERS upgrade and a Roadkill Garage install .. you just have to reside in the fact Steve might have it on the farm for a couple of years .. lol
Haha. True. I think I’ll keep it at my shop
@@thedirtheadshed nice job on the 4 link with David ..those ready made brackets are sweet
Awesomeness
You F ing rock!
You rock!
And now I have to do this to my tacoma..but I am a better grinder than welder...workin' on it.
You’ll figure it out
That Y pipe is the MVP here. You could just replace that first resonator and get great results, and it doesn't sound like a fart machine.
It’s easy to see. After the fact
@@thedirtheadshed Hind sight is 20/20
"Hey, Superduty, you wanna make some more power for me?" "I can't do that Dave" 😂😂
Hahah
This mountain biking stuff looks like a rush I might have to go try something like this
It’s a blast
