    For AFIB it’s important to note that alcohol increases the risk of AFIB, especially for women.
    So stop drinking alcohol, the long term risks outweigh the minor short term stress relief benefit.
    For stress relief, try meditation or just going for a relaxing walk.

    I can attest to the filtered/unfiltered coffee and cholesterol thing. Years ago I got into making coffee in a French press vs. my normal filtered drip coffee maker. I happened to get my cholesterol checked at work and was upset to see it had dramatically jumped despite my vegan diet not changing. The only thing I could think of, was the fact I'd switched to drinking unfiltered coffee. So, I went back to filtered. Months later I got my cholesterol checked again and it had dropped back to its normal low number.

    I sure appreciate these informative talks. Been learning from Dr McDougall since the 70's when I heard him on AM Northwest TV talk show. My Dad at 46 at the time had 95% blockage and open heart surgery so I wanted to learn how to prevent heart disease. At 66 I am high school weight, hike regularly and no atherosclerosis but have had atrial flutter as had Atrial Septal Defect repair in 1980, an ablation in 2011 and recently atrial flutter again. On Eliquis and a beta blocker now but whole foods plant based no oil diet. Will check out my CHAD score. I may opt for another ablation as I dislike side effects of meds but they did put me back into rhythm. Thanks for clarifying things on this subject matter Dr McDougall and congrats on your award! Well deserved.

    l worry about these protein powder mixes and pills sold in health stores and online for weight lifting, workout muscle body builders. They are teaching the young to drink this stuff and workout. l take it personally because my son is on this stuff and he goes to the gym. l know it's harmful. I see it in his behavior. l don't know how to get him off this crap without continuous arguments. He's been on this posion for many many years. This child is 38. l truly believe this posion is going to destroy him. How does a concern/worried mom like me get through to him before it's too late ? And honestly he was also taking steroid shots years ago....today, lm not sure. l don't have support....it's only me as a parent.... Any suggestions out there Dr. M, or anyone out there ?

    • @JohnDoe-xk1dv
      @JohnDoe-xk1dv Год назад

      It's only an educated guess, but if your son has been hyperfocused on the likes of bulking, steroids, and protein powders to the detriment of his health, he may well have body dysmorphia, and/or other mental health and wellbeing concerns would be that guess.
      Seems he's trying to hide and gloss over/compensate in his head for something here. I don't know obviously about your life backgrounds. But if he's covering deep wounds emotionally, it's probably trying to stress in helping him you love him, and if there are issues, that help can be out there.
      If your fear genuine risk of overdose on the very near future, or acute health issues like severe heart attack risk, that's to go to local authorities in safeguarding in your locality for advice on.
      But otherwise... this is self medicating and addiction he has to admit himself likely in the end and to want to understand, painful as lack of that is for you to watch.
      Narcotics Anonymous resources on the web you may want to check out - definitely drug like effects here.
      Hope that may be of some thoughts here. Hope you have /have had somebody support as well at least on occasion - trying to support and cope with your son's behaviour I can imagine has been stressful and painful many times over the years. Family members groups, for people with substance misuse, are out there.

      As a first step, get him to change from animal based protein supplements to plant based. There are many pea protein based supplements. Too much plant protein could still lead to issues like gout and kidney problems, but early research suggests it’s less harmful than animal protein supplements, of which milk whey supplement seems the most common.
