I particularly appreciate "hand-off" where I copy something on my phone and I can paste it on my Mac, or vice versa. Imminently handy.

I've a friend who loathes Apple and loves Android. When I happened to do this thing of copying on one device and pasting the other, she said well, okay, there is that. Apparently Android can't do it -- and it's been trying for years. I have no idea why it's such a problem but I love that we have it on iOS.

Control K and Y is going save me so much time, thanks William, if I ever meet you, I will buy you a drink

Insanely useful tips, especially the K-Y thing. I've often wished for a second clipboard but didn't want to buy software to handle it. (I like to keep my system as lean and clean as possible.) I will use this tip a lot. Thanks!

Thanks. But try the free version of Raycast: I’m sure it still includes a clipboard manager and as good as having two clipboards is, having countless ones is tremendous.

I've used Macs for donkeys years too and didn't know some of these tips. Excellent! Thank you William!

Thanks. Crazy, isn't it? If I think of the quite possibly hundreds of thousands of hours I've spent with these machines and still they surprise me. Love it.

I had no idea about copying text out of images, but I'm not _very_ surprised.
However, the big one at the end blew my mind a little bit! I really expected it to be something I'd go: "Really? How did you not know that?" But I had no idea there are two separate clipboards like that! That's fantastic! Thank you! 🙏❤

That's made my day, thank you. I'm very conscious that what's new to me could be old to everyone else so I hope I'm careful to not proclaim brilliant exclusive knowledge. But once I stumbled across news of the Control-K thing, I had to run up to everyone I could find and tell them too.

Copy and paste without the original style has been driving me nuts lol. I was looking for "remove formatting" and not finding it. Thanks for more useful information!

Could I copy the weather we are having here right now and paste it elsewhere?
Freezing rain several days, high ice accumulation, and now it is coming off in sheets and branches and trees coming down. Most, like I, have not been outside for days.
Unlike others I still have power...the power to watch you. Have a good day.

ctrk-K : kill to end of line and ctrl+y paste in old school emacs. There are quite a few of these old Unix line editing commands in MacOS..

"Kill"! Unix can be so dramatic. Thank you, I didn't know that. I wonder what Y can be... "(Y)ou can paste now".

I'm theorizing that they used Y because it resembles V, somewhat.

      Ctrl-Y is Yank
I wish the Mac had the EMACS-style kill ring like my beloved Lisp machine of yore.

I also like the ability to just copy the subject of a picture; it does a very good job. Highlighting text in a photo and then translating is another favorite.

Oh, yes! I actually forgot that - which is ridiculous of me since I used it when making the poster for this video. Please picture me slapping my forehead.

I’m noticing that Control-K doesn’t copy, it cuts. At least for me. Are you getting that same result in your apps? At first, I thought it was just the app I was using, but I’m finding that to be true in more than one app, though I haven’t tested it, extensively. It’s still a useful tip, but that surprised me.

Yes, same here. I'm such an Alfred 5 user with its countless clipboards that I've only really used this one in the fun of finding it out. But multiple clipboards, I'm in. I sound so boring when I say that.

Thanks for Ctrl K/Y tip. What am I missing with tip 1? Is it just copy & pasting an image? 🤔

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  7 месяцев назад +1

Yes. Ridiculous, isn't it? I used to spend so long doing all sorts of things and not realising that you can just select the file -- I mean just click it highlight it, not even open it -- and paste its contents into something else. I do easily ten of these on certain days and it feels revolutionary to me.

You threw me there: it's mentioned in a video I've made but not released yet. Might be going up next week, except I'm trying to get a more topical one done. And I should say that the book only makes a tiny appearance, chiefly because it was on my desk as I was recording and I thought of it.
