If i was reviewing two/three guitars, i would play similarly (open chords, picking, strumming,..), but i would arrange the small parts of videos of different guitars right next to each other according to the type of playing. For example: one chord on one guitar, then one chord on another; a few seconds of fingerpicking on one guitar and a few seconds on another, so the sound is fresh in the memory and it is easier to compare. And, yeah, thank you for not talking nonsense (or rather for not talking at all ;) ) ... Just a humble suggestion...
Many knowledgeable folks say that Eastman flattops sound more like Collings than Martin. IMHO, Eastman guitars have THEIR OWN sound that is a shade or two different than Martin but not lesser quality. Also, we don’t know the age of each guitar; the brand, type, and gauge of strings used on each guitar; or if there may be other variables to consider. The sound of an individual guitar can vary noticeably and Martin makes a few different models of D-18.
Sure! There are many variables! I'm not trying to prove any points, these are just general comparisons of different models. Every piece of wood is different, I've played several of the same Gibson/Martin models that were made just days apart with drastically different sounds. No comparison will ever be 100% perfect.
This is one of my doubts! How much sound consistency (i mean between same models) have these guitars? Does Martins, Gibsons, Taylors have more sound consistency than Eastmanns, Blueridges....?
Absolutely, age and strings can make a pretty significant difference as can the variation between individual instruments of the same brand. I've owned both guitars, currently own the E-10D. My D-18 was a great guitar, but for whatever reason, the E-10D just speaks to me personally. I will add that the Adi top has opened up significantly since I've owned it. It has a really airy, balanced feel with plenty of low end grunt. I just think it's a spectacular guitar in its own right, but the fact that I paid a mere $600 delivered for it just makes it a bit of a freak of nature IMHO. Thanks for the video, Ian, nice playing!
I just got an E1OM this week and I like it so much I'm considering a matching dreadnought. I have owned a Martin 000-28 for nearly 20 years. My first and only guitar until this Eastman. I like that they sound different. I think they both sound fantastic.
The martin sounds more twangy and old school. The eastman sounds more sparkly and has tons of sustain. I'd say the treble sparkle is the biggest different between the two. I think these characteristics lends itself to the martin sounding more vintage and the eastman sounding more modern.
I love that d18 martinesque growl. But... isn’t the Eastman Adi-topped? It takes more time for this spruce to open, which makes the comparison a bit unfair.
When I bought my Martin, it was TOUGH to choose between a D28 and a D18. Ultimately I bought the D28, figuring I'd buy a D18 later. Well, later came and I realized that I love my D28 too much to take it out of the house much. So instead of a D18 (which I'll prolly get at some point, anyway), I got a nice used E10D for $750. It's a great guitar and I enjoy it a lot. Maybe not quite as much as a D18, but I don't mind taking the E10D out of the house - so that's a win!
I can hear the differences, but I think they both sound phenomenal. That said, Eastman offers some incredible bang for the buck. Looking to purchase an Eastman in the near future.
The Martin sounds like a Martin, which is a familiar, iconic sound featured on so many recordings over the years. The Eastman is voiced a little differently, which is a good thing IMO. I think I like the Eastman better just because it is different.
Well the comparison is of dreads with mahogany back and sides, the e10d is basically a d18 copy. All new standard series Martin's have scalloped bracing as of 2018.
Right. Sorry. I need new glasses or a new brain. I had a E10D. It was a real cannon, but in another online comparison, I preferred the sound of the D18. I ended up selling it towards a D-28.
@@GroovesAndLands You are CORRECT. Even after the Standard Series were "Reimagined" in 2018, Martin kept the D-28's top braces NON-SCALLOPED. Hence, one of the main differences between the (D-28-non scalloped) and the (HD-28 "is" SCALLOPED). However, the re-imagined D-28 does have "Forward-Shifted" braces, they're just non-scalloped braces.
Have you played an Alvarez MD60BG? I'm trying to decide between it and the E10D. I don't have the option of hearing either in person before I buy, unfortunately.
Great video. I have an Eastman E10D and I hear some similar overtones in my guitar to the Martin you demonstrated which is kind of interesting. Can you tell me what mic you are using for this clip? Sounds really great!
The Eastman guitar sounded brighter than the Martin. Has a great sound. What I wonder what will the Eastman be worth later. Martin's seems to get more valuable as they age.Unless it's built in Mexico like my DRS 2. so Mexico or China. If I could afford it I'd like to have a E 40 D Eastman. D 41 D42 D45 Martin's are out of my reach. The Eastman are hand built.
I don’t care what the name on the headstock is. For some a guitar is a vanity purchase. The Eastman sounds great, is 1/2 the price and Martin doesn’t sound substantially better to me.
Martin clear winner but Eastman is good value. I got rid of my Eastman as I could never love it and bought a Martin om28. Problem is everyone is interested in price so you have a whole bunch of people promoting those crappy Harley bentons on RUclips.

An Eastman E6D TC thermo cured top would be a close competition for the D18. Saying that , a D18 is every guitarists dream

Nice comparision. Can you please make a comparison video for Martin D10e and Eastman E1D. Thanks
I love that d18 martinesque growl.

It takes more time for this spruce to open, which makes the comparison a bit unfair.
Martinesque growl?
The d18 IS a Martin.
Fingerpicking - Martin: folk 1:53, blues 2:19; Eastman: folk 4:50, blues 5:36

The Eastman sounds better. Bolder, clearer, more sustain and frankly more exciting.
What I would like from a top range mahogany dread.
No

Two great guitars here, no question.

I like the finger picking which has a Etta Baker esquire about it with the alternative bass 👍🏼
Thanks for watching my friend.
Great! Eastmanns are surplisingly good guitars!
Nice comparison!

Given the Eastman scalloped bracing, wouldn't a HD-28 been a more appropriate comparison?

Comparing an E6D to a Martin d-18 would be a more equal comparison. Then you would have the same tonewoods throughout the guitars :).

Looking at the same choice myself.. did you pick one, and how do you find it if so?
@@notmyname3681 I did not. I decided I don’t play well enough to justify the expense so I stuck with my FG800 😄. Good luck!👍

Eastman E10D เสียงนุ่มนวล ชอบมากครับผม
Maybe its because my ears are a tuned to the Martin sound but, IMO, there is no comparison. The Martin sound is superior in every respect.
I agree, I want to love the Eastman because it's a lot more affordable for me, but I can't deny my ears, I much prefer the D18.
Great video. I have an Eastman E10D and I hear some similar overtones in my guitar to the Martin you demonstrated which is kind of interesting.

Thanks Mike. It is the Shure KSM32

I did buy an E 40 D EASTMAN ITS A GREAT GUITAR.
I hate to say this since the Martin D-18 is my favorite sounding guitar, but that Eastman E-10 sounded great!
they are a great value. However, if I had the choice I'd go D-18.
0:28 3:22 Eastman wins.
D18

D-18 is clearly better here. Better projection and depth of tone. To me, a Martin D-18 is the perfect acoustic guitar.
Martin clear winner but Eastman is good value. I got rid of my Eastman as I could never love it and bought a Martin om28. Problem is everyone is interested in price so you have a whole bunch of people promoting those crappy Harley bentons on RUclips.
I think in the long run, you'll be happier owning a Martin. Love me some om28!
Martin sounds traditional. Eastman sounds modern. IDK what martin does, but it's not reproducible.
Eastman good sound but Martin is Martin.
Deep and Darkness sound
Eastman sounds great but nothing plays like a Martin
or sounds like one...eastman was too lean and bright
The sad reality is, and we all know it,
Eastman sound great, cost less, but at the end of the day, you still don't have a Martin.
Only way for Eastman to be superior is to have an adirondack top when it goes up against a martin.
eastman has a bigger body
