  • Sam Snead REVEALS His Short Game Secrets
you should practice most people will not practice oh what used to practice that little silly Chip Shot but 9 out 10 don't know how to play a short shot but learn practice a little bit you'd be surprised how many shots you can save on a round of golf by getting the ball up and down in one putt I had a boss one time that g he could get to the green and two and they take run off with six I'd said boss you're looking for ways to make shots I said no learn just practice a little bit the weight stays on the left feet close together the left arm stay straight and it makes it so much easier here is where you save shots this is very very important in chipping this ball to the green you should always try to pitch it onto the putting surface not land it short but however there are times that you must land it short you have no other alternative butt landed short but in a Chip Shot like this I must land it on the putting surface CU it's smoother and you're apt to get the right kind of a bounce you're looking for but when you hit it short it can take any man of of directions it can stops very sudden it can kick right can kick left and often times you don't get the right bounce but whenever you can be sure to pitch it onto the putting surface now the ball is on the side of the bank and it's now I'm going down uh graen it's fast so this I'll use a wedge I don't try to have a follow through but it's down and you just bump the ball and let it run it's coming out here running pretty fast now my weight is on my left foot and so the ball is played back off of my right foot in this manner because the slope of the ground you don't have much of a back swing but it's just sort of a chopping motion you just you just chop it out and let it run it'll run and run and run and run now we have a shot here where you must pitch it over the sand trap this just scares the average person to death he knows he's going to pitch it in the sand and from that on it's very scary but you visualize just how hard to swing forget about the sand use a sand iron in this motion or this position where you get the ball up it'll make the ball pop up and they come down nice and soft that's not a hard shot but just let it work don't try to help it just swing the club down on the ball and let it pop up it's not that hard of a shot

Why has he pointed his elbows out so much? Many teach elbows more close

As long as you're synced up in your rhythms good honestly your arms can be on all sorts of different positions as long as you do it every time

Sam was all about tension free golf. Often times those who focus on keeping their arms in close and completely straight tense up and then their timing and rythm are thrown out the window.
Sam demonstrates his method of just letting the arms hang down naturally and appears to have his elbows flared due to his wider frame.

You don't achieve 82 PGA wins with an awful short game.

You have no idea what you are talking about. You don’t win 82 times if you don’t have a short game.

Watch Sam Snead vs Ben Hogan in their classic TV matchup and then tell me he had an awful short game. His chip shots were a thing of beauty.
