This piece, especially the original, epitomizes "spooky" as a concept distinct from "scary". It's like capturing Halloween in a bottle!

Banjo Kazooie Music is always the perfect Holiday music. I like listening to Click Clock Wood in Easter, Madmonster Mansion at Halloween, and Freezeezy Peak at Christmas

Can never get enough Banjo Kazooie! Random bit of trivia - the Haunted Church in this level is modelled after a church near where I live! If I remember right, Rare's office was down the road from it

Grant has been described as creating a whole genre based on “Oomp-Ah” Rythms, dubbed “Kirkhopian” because of. And Mad Monster Mansion is one of those tracks which really tell you how fitting it is just in the transition from the opening alone. Stellar composition from a stellar guy, and I’m glad ya liked it too

that is literally taken from Danny Elfman

Yeah, it’s just Danny Elfman’s style. But his compositions are still excellent.

Grant Kirkhope actually did do an arrangement himself for Smash Ultimate with the Spiral Mountain theme, also from Banjo-Kazooie. Smash Ultimate has a lot of composers, and like you said, a lot of what you'd call guest composers. It's feels like basically every famous japanese VGM composer did at least one arrangement, and mostly not of one of their own songs.

    • @Ennbeard
      @Ennbeard Год назад +8

Of note, I believe Grant was the FIRST western composer EVER to do a new arrangement for Smash!

And it's an absolute masterpiece, too!

Grant Kirkhope is one of those composers where you can always pick his music out when hearing it. His style is great, and if I had to pick one word to describe his work, it’s “whimsical”. That’ll become very obvious once you hear more Banjo, or some of his other works, like Donkey Kong 64 (whose soundtrack is literally just Banjo 3) or even Mario + Rabbids (I always call Kingdom Battle’s OST a modern day Banjo OST because of Grant, lol). One of my favorite composers for a reason.

He does have some range with some more grounded work like Kingdoms of Amalur and his stuff on World of Warcraft! I really like Grant Kirkhope's style.

Wait till you hear Click Clock Wood from Banjo Kazooie. The level takes place in all 4 seasons and the song changes with each season. Grant at his best.

Banjo Kazooie was huge for me as a kid, one of my biggest things that I would replay all the time. I played BK till I got 100% in about 5 and a half hours, and Banjo Tooie down to about 11 and a half. Mad Monster Mansion is one of my favourite levels, great theme, and the game owns it. It has a good mix of larger open areas and smaller divisions or rooms, it's just a fun level to explore. A fun one is a room with a Ouija board where you have to spell out "Banjo-Kazooie" 😆
This theme sounds simple at first, but it just keeps building and adding different things, it has some great melodies and layers in there. The N64 era for Kirkhope was like the PS1 Final Fantasy era for Uematsu, they were just on another level of inspiration and creativity.

If I recall what Sakurai more or less said, they basically have a bunch of composers they contact for Smash and generally let them pick something that they'd really like to go with on their list, or who they feel fits, etc. It's a mixed approach that clearly comes with solid results.
and yes Smash Ultimate is well, the "Ultimate" Smash Bros, and probably due to the sheer amount of licensing to get around 90 characters, 1000+ songs and over 100 stages in a single game (and at the level of quality), probably a once-in-a-lifetime crossover of its particular style in gaming. Fortnite kiiind of compare but it more just slapdash grabs whatever's popular to throw in as a skin, etc. Sakurai appears to have stepped back for the last couple years once it finally finished and there's no sign of a new one on the near or far horizon for probably the first time in what feels like a decade.

Woo! It's awesome finally seeing a request I put in (even if I mostly just piggy-backed off someone else's) and just in time for spooky season! Honestly, I'd call the whole Banjo soundtrack "Video Game Hall of Fame" but only a handful of the tracks got remixed for Smash and it says something that this was one of them. Don't worry, I've already made plenty of Banjo requests and more will be coming. :)

I love that Marble Gallery from SotN is playing in the background in the intro. Also, the Banjo-Kazooie song is top-notch spooky/Halloween music. I get why the Smash track is the way it is, but it takes out all of the spookiness.

If there’s any Smash song I’d love to see you react to, it’s the smash remix of Persona 5’s Beneath the Mask, imagine Beneath the Mask, this chill, calm song, redone as a fight theme.

Banjo-Kazooie... one of the defining games of the N64 with an amazing soundtrack! Dunno why, but the Smash Bros version reminded me A LOT of "Dancing Christmas in the 13th month" from Ragnarok Online.

Smash is great because the devs know every franchise they put in, every character, every song, is someone's favourite, and they really try to put in the effort to make sure every one of them is well represented. Except maybe Little Mac, poor guy has no air game whatsoever, that man needs some buffs.

That goes hard for a lot of ppl i know and their childhood. I always argued that the dk 64 were better with them. Of course we knew both were form the same company so we always ended laughing and trolling ourselves. When banjo got added to smash they got crazy because the songs. Btw, a simple triple request if there is time to spare. Howling Gears (the full track), Vanaheimr (Book VII Opening Movie song) and book 3 boss theme (full track) from Fire Emblem Heroes. You will find something very unique on that that ones goes on a diferent way of other fire emblem games.
