I think you would really enjoy „the loneliness of the long distance runner” by Alan Silllitoe. The story follows a young inmate of a juvenile detention center who is allowed to go on a long run everyday to compete in a tournament. It follows his thoughts on his runs. It is really short but super fascinating, I really loved it.

I recently read Afterdark and i absolutely loved it. Don't expect any heavy plot. It just kind of flows, it doesn't really have any definitive ending, but still it was soo interesting. And it was short.
And after that i would recommend Norwegian wood, i think that book is digestable for first time Murakami readers. 😀
