Love your video. Just got home from treasure hunting at 3 estate sales today and picked up this same machine w/case in excellent condition. So much fun!.
I love that Sterling. Personally, I have one. One of the escapement springs is missing, (probably the one to stop the escapement) and the bracket that holds the star gear is also broken. If I could get ahold of a new escapement assembly and bracket, then I could get it working! And, it was working about 3 months ago, until it acted up and broke.
This is a very enjoyable video, thanks. It is great to see someone who is so obviously passionate about old machines. In the past few years I have started collecting portable keypunch machines, mechanical beasts that produce IBM punch cards. My theory is that punch cards are going to make a comeback after enough people finally tire of computer viruses, hackers, etc., and I'll be ready.
Looks great! I didn’t get that Consul 232 repaired and had the repair shop chuck it to trash last September. Though my Olivetti Studio 44 is with me and I use it now , since my other two machines are almost finished from repair. They’re my Brother-Webster XL 500 and very rare IBM Personal Selectric Hybrid.
You should make a video of your favorites and why in each category. Like ultra portable, portable, medium, etc. I think your subscribers would love it. It would possible start a run on those models. Ha ha! :)
Very nice. These late 30s speedback machines sure do work well. I have a 39 Standard with crinkle coat finish and it amazes me how well it works. I haven't heard the singing, but I'll have to listen now :)
Going to pick up this same machine tomorrow. Looking forward to it. I love your videos. Do you offer a video of you doing one of your "Chemical Cleanings"? Regards from Mount Pleasant, WI!!
I’ve got one in Black. Same year but mine has the question mark on the key. I’m going to get it restored soon. It all works just fine. So restoration should be mostly cosmetic. This machine is awesome.
it is truly one of the finest writing instruments ever made. make a video once you have it finished and send me a link! i have the same name on FB, eBay, and IG
Joe De Hoyos -if this is a machine you plan on using, i suggest you contact Mr Steve Dade for a full replacement rubber kit; he specializes in SC models, and does fantastic work at very reasonable prices. His email is nailgnr@sbcglobal.net AND if you have any further mechanical or procedural questions, please feel free to email me directly at typewriterjustice@gmail.com
Interesting that it has a paper bail, my 4A series Sterling of course doesn't. Funny how many little oddities there are in each typewriter family. As for that comment about those machines singing, oh yes, yes they do.
Kurisu Yamato - i've often wondered if the paper bale / paper fingers dilemma was something decided at the customer level, sort of like power windows on a car. I have at least a dozen of these, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to which machines have what(at least on the 2-series Floating Shift models...later, yes, but the 2's?? nope)
Man I want one of these so bad! Watching your videos @typewriterjustice has made me want to get a typewriter of my own. So far I just thing this and the lc smith and corona 1938 in black just look like the hot rod of typewriters. Just clean and simple. Question for you what is a decent price for a service if I was to find one that needed work and I’m sure it depends on what needs to be done but just a ball park. Cleaning and new ribbon. Going to start looking for one of these on eBay. Just not sure if I should fork out the top dollar for one that’s already been refurbished or if I should pick one up and take it to a shop.
I see a lot of similarities between the Corona Silent and the Patria (Swissa Piccola) typewriter designed by Max Bill and I suspect he was inspired by this one. Considering a swap out. Are these Corona Silent models good for long haul writing sessions or clunkers?
the early series SC Floating Shift models are some of the best machines ever made, imho…performance, design, aesthetics, quality control, reliability, repairability, availability - they’re simply hard to beat. just my two cents, but for long form work i would take a cleaned/serviced SC Sterling over a similar quality Patria in a heartbeat; if you’ve never tried one then you’re in for a treat :)
Wow! Truly, this machine is mesmerizing, so easily put in a typing trance, anyone who sits before it. Would you say this 1938 Sterling has the same typing "feel" as a 1947 Sterling, or a 1949 Clipper?
they're >very< similar. Part of the beauty of the Floating Shift line of SC's is the amazing consistency in response and feel throughout the entire production series. They're amazing machines!
Hi there, what do you think about the Olympia Traveller ? INoticed you have many reviews of others, even SF, but not the Traveller unless I'm not seeing it. Recommend for serious , beginner however ?
The Traveller line isn't one i've ever gotten into. The few examples i've typed on have felt clunky and cheap when compared to the SF, but as always it's entirely possible there are some good ones out there. Mostly, the overall look of the design just doesn't grab me, and ultimately that's the most important thing: if the machine calls to you...and the Traveller simply doesn't do it for me.
Thank you for replying/sharing your opinion about that, I do understand you are a collector. From a practical stand point, what do you think of in terms of useability... easy enough to type on? At least somewhat durable, no especially known issues ? It will be my first typewriter, but I am not a new writer and I have a lot I need to type up and I was wondering if this model would sufficiently get the job done, wish some ease (though understandably not as smooth as an automatic perhaps). Thank you!
terrific vid' does this machine, and the vid you did on the Erika m 1936 have the same features? which one would you choose? I value your opinion...Thanks!
WolfsbaneFilms - it depends on the model & paint finish, as well as the overall condition. A gloss finish like this one is likely to be the most expensive, especially if it’s been restored; mine usually end up between $300-500 on eBay. An unrestored black wrinkle-paint finish Silent or Sterling can usually be had for under $100, though, and they’re fantastic machines. Good luck!
Hello! I have a couple of typewriters that I don’t want and I was wondering if you’d like to buy them from me on eBay for a very reasonable price? They have a few problems, just 2 of the typers but they are very easily fixed just me not having the right tools for the job? Just wondering haha
2008bruin2008 - the best place to start would be Richard Polts wonderful webpage site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/indexmobile.html where you can find a list of typewriter shops, as well as a plethora of tips and tricks for DIY solutions to common problems. The links page alone is a treasure trove.
as with most typewriters, you use the lowercase L for the 1. If you'd like to make an exclamation mark ! you hit . then backspace and then ' above it. Easy peasy
Finnians - i find there is more variation between individual machines than there is between design series on these; maintenance & tuning make the largest difference
Is this beauty for sale? I am buying my first typewriter for daily journal writing, any advice? I like the earlier models between 1930's to 1950's. At this time I am eyeing a kolibri and corona sterling. Thank you!
Long gone, alas, though it's not very hard to find early Corona models like this in decent shape. If looks & size are not part of the equation, I think you'll find the Corona types much better than the Kolibri.
The only Corona that I would love to have right now :p
This is a beautiful machine, timeless.
Love your video. Just got home from treasure hunting at 3 estate sales today and picked up this same machine w/case in excellent condition. So much fun!.
I saw a corona sterling with a flat top that did not have a paper bale but had the fingers;) same year too.
Love this machine - picked up mine for a small amount - locally. Yours is amazing!!
Man! That is beautiful! Thanks for making this video!

That is a beauty
Can't get enough of this, Charles!!

WONDERFUL MACHINE

you can both feel it through the keytops and audibly hear it :)
Going to pick up this same machine tomorrow. Looking forward to it. I love your videos. Do you offer a video of you doing one of your "Chemical Cleanings"? Regards from Mount Pleasant, WI!!
nice preserve these typewriters 🙏
I just brought one can't wait to do business baby! Lol
they’re mean machines, for sure :)
Damn that thing is clean

TypewriterJustice sure thing. Will do. It will be my first attempt to get a restoration done. I’ve only ever gotten machines cleaned and oiled.

TypewriterJustice thanks for the advice and help offer. I will most certainly consider it all.
Was this color common back in the day was this was sold?
These days there seem not many to be around - at least not in that color.
Interesting that it has a paper bail, my 4A series Sterling of course doesn't. Funny how many little oddities there are in each typewriter family.

Gorgeous machine. Is this a re-paint or is this a factory original finish? Where can I get a set of decals for a Remington Noiseless number 7?
Dude! Most excellent work! Question:1895 Empire, can you do the 'superwide' ribbon for this baby? Please? Please? Huh?

I just picked up one just like this from a thrift shop in dirty but decent shape. Serial number 2A 39051
terrific vid' does this machine, and the vid you did on the Erika m 1936 have the same features? which one would you choose? I value your opinion...Thanks!
I really hope you didn’t sell this one and kept it for yourself!
alas, sell it i did! best one i’ve ever seen in person, i miss it often
I love it ! Great video ,, we'll demoed ! Thank you
My grandfather was cfo of Smith and corona typewriters
wow! that's pretty darned cool! i would loved to have met him
How much do you usually see 1930-1940s Corona’s going for? I’ve been wanting to pick one up for so long.
WolfsbaneFilms - it depends on the model & paint finish, as well as the overall condition. Does anyone know a good but cheap enough typewriter that would be nice for writing a novel?
Willing to sell!?
sold many years ago :)
How did you get it so clean? I have one like it that I won at an auction. It needs a lot of cleaning. Not sure where to start.

Where is the 1 key? Hmm

I just found a 1A version. How old are those?
playerpage between 1934-1941, check typewriterdatabase.com for exact information
@@TypewriterJustice I did, thanks! Mine was built in 1937. Works great! My kids are fascinated by it.
I just lost a 38-39(ish) in black. Busted escapment. That was my baby.
Toby Taylor - don't give up hope! the escapement is pretty easy to replace on these, and parts machines are plentiful...
Charlie, where can I get parts for a 1938-1940 Sterling?
What do you use to clean these?
a little bit of knowledge, a lot of hard work, and some truly obscene chemicals ;)
It's so SHINNY
46' has a better feel. ( Minor bias)
Finnians - i find there is more variation between individual machines than there is between design series on these; maintenance & tuning make the largest difference
@@TypewriterJustice Even a little maintenance goes a long way with these machines.
I have one that needs repair would you be interested in repairing it for me it’s a gift for my son
Selling this one?
already sold!
How much did it go for?
