The Bernard scene always gets me. The first time I watched it I was crying my eyes out. I think Hurley would have shared everything with his friend, I always found it odd that he ended up not being happy with him.
I think the friend was upset and just left, because Hugo being rich makes him management, which was the reason they quit their jobs and doing crazy stuff.
I've done research on lottery winners for school in the past and I completely understand Hugo's issue with the food. Something like 70% of lottery winner are broke within a decade and a pretty high amount attempt suicide also. Suddenly lottery winners have to deal with a bunch of people trying to become closer friends with them, as well as current friends and family acting like you have endless amounts of money to give them. I think this episode could've used a better example from Hurley's past as reason for why he was freaking out tho, the story with his friend is kinda weak and doesnt get the point across well
I think the point is that even back then, Hurley knew that everything was going to change once everyone found out. His "EQ" (emotional intelligence) is very high. He understands people - and that's why every one should love him!
If you did research on lottery winners, you'd know they have an IMMENSE higher rate of suicide. As to friends being closer, I've seen this, just in having a much higher paying job. People are like that, then you have to think how much are they my "friend".
Good thing I am very cautious. I would put away around 75% of the money and save it for 10-15 years later. Bonds, stocks, real estate. No spending lavishly, perhaps only a really nice car and an apartment. No need to buy expensive art or any other weird stuff.
It got the point across perfectly for me, because I know what people are like, and I also know that Hurley knows that too. He could tell what was going to happen before it happened. He wanted to make sure people liked him for him before they found out he had money. And he wanted to be sure they wouldn't treat him different. Obviously it didn't all work out, but that's not his fault. And with the food situation, he saw the same thing happening all over again.
Niki, you are lucky you have a chance to watch Lost completely unspoiled. Suraj does an amazing job of not giving things away. When I was watching Lost, I would always have things ruined for me because it didn't air straight away in my country. You have a great opportunity to enjoy the show properly, please don't ruin it by Googling things. Got to say I'm glad your facial hair is back to the old style Suraj. Niki's hair as luscious as ever.

I always loved this episode!!! Not as good on repeat but it’s a tender episode that gets me in the feels . It shows how much of a sweet person Hurley is. Also Hurley’s handouts is one of my best themes and moments of the show. Just watching my favorite characters eating and having a break from reality. Also Claire and Charlie with the peanut butter ;)

Not that it's justified, but being harsh to strangers can happen if someone is on a desert island with barely anything and have likely lost multiple people to jungle folk hiding in the bushes.
Sawyer quite literally forced a women to kiss him in exchange for something he didn't have. That shit is quite literally sexual harassment, but Nikki doesn't give a fuck.
While I love these reactions, Nikki comes at it from a human interest point of view so a lot of the mythology of the show (which those of us back in the day obsessed and debated over) isn't fully appreciated. Kinda worried for when she gets to the later seasons, lol.
