I was lucky enough to attend a masterclass with Joe Walker when he visited my Film department at York Uni back in 2011. He gave us rushes for Shame's "New York, New York" scene and told us to cut our own version, critiquing each one in turn and then showing us his version (which has only 1 cut). It was a brilliant lesson in storytelling through restraint that I think about so often when I'm watching movies ever since. He was also incredibly generous and kind to all of us students, been loving following his career ever since!
That must have been a great experience! He actually mentioned this Shame exercise he gave out to students in multiple interviews so it's memorable for him too. I also met him once briefly and he was the most kind-hearted, down-to-earth guy, so I share your feelings. There's a lot to learn from him for sure.
Arrival is a very very very well edited picture - and modern, meaning updating the language we might expect from film editing historically. The whole film in fact can be boiled down to the timing between the different scenes. Never do Mr Walker and Mr Villeneuve stay too long in a scene. They always go out juuuuust a little before, leaving us wanting more, leaving us hooked for what's to come. Just brilliant!
Another amazing essay. I’m hoping you continue doing these and continue filling the void the stopping of “Every Frame a Painting” left! You have your own style and you do it well. Thank you for the time you put into making these videos.
Think of an editor as a cook selecting the best ingredients in order to give you the best soup you've ever tasted. Those ingredients are obviously the directing, acting, cinematography, art direction, etc., that the editor "cooks" for the right amount of time until the utmost taste is achieved. Here, Joe Walker is a top chef.
This essay is so brilliant. Arrival is one of my fav films and all the other films you mentioned are also on the top of my list. I think it has a lot to do with the editing and Denis of course! I love the connection you made on the relationship between Director and Editor as well. I especially like this idea of 'slow' editing. It's really aligned with how I want to approach not just my craft or creativity but in life as well.
I love how this is constructed and how the point unfolds via direct quotations of the subjects. However, you must give credit to the original sources you intermixed and blended into this work. DP/30 does amazing work to bring these voices to wider audiences and preserving the history of film making. Give credit where credit is due.
i got to be at a Q&A with him and ask him the question of "what is your advice for building a strong director/editor relationship" and he went on to talk with so much love about his collaborations with Denis and how it's all in the trust that you build with one another and throughout the whole Q&A you could feel how much he loves his job. he was also hilarious so 10/10 for me :D
Only reason an average viewer is patient with any of these long shots is sound design. Its the most important piece, IMO, its whats stopping my thumbing from double tapping on the screen
So a couple weeks ago Yi Yi joined Chungking Express as one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I find your channel today and your videos on them got me to sub. A few hours later you post a video about the ending of Arrival, which I went back and rewatched for the first time since 2018(?) YESTERDAY. You’re starting to freak me out with all this excellent content!!!!
“I deeply hate green screens” how those true directors display authenticity feel so cinematic is so inspiring. That line Denis delivered can be put in any Tarantino movies 😂
I loved the films of Dennis. He has a specific style that is heavy on the heart. Also Alfonso from Gravity. Gravity edit is great. This film Arrival has its magic in the screenplay. Well directed by Dennis and Music was awesome and yes, edited very well by Joe. Awesome team.
More long takes! Quick cutting and shaky cam does nothing for the audience except vertigo. Monsignor Velnue, you are the future of Science Fiction! Spielberg and Lucas dropped the ball... hard.... several times..... I refuse to sit through another cash grab bulls*** Star Wars or Indiana Jones
I like to drink in every shot when watching a movie. The frenetic cuts in many movies today are jarring to me and wholly unsatisfying. Sicario is one of my favorite movies, perfectly cut.
Nice catch! I like to play around with match cuts and little hidden bits in every video of mine which nobody notices 99% of the time, but it's fun for me.
Love the channel, but you have the score too loud in your videos. The irony of this when you make film essays, I’m sure is not lost on you. Keep up the (almost) great work. 😊
Thanks for the tip, I try to improve every time and learn more about sound editing, but unfortunately I can't fix earlier releases, so hopefully it won't happen in the future.
Man, how do you find those movie scenes, documentaries, and interviews you use in your videos? I want to start making videos about cinema too. Can you help me out?
It's a real shame you had some random people talking over your Beethoven remix music video - if you turned up the volume of the music a little more I wouldn't be able to hear a single thing that they said.
A think this video is well put together, thank you. I just don’t understand why you added the so called music in the first sections! It just go in the way of listening to the dialogue! You ruined it! Fortunately you got better otherwise I would have left and give you a 👎.
An oscar winning editor might be able to build tension without cutting but this videos editing was sure a headache to watch with its relentless cuts and failure to stick to its own title
I think that Dune 2 is about the worst blockbuster editing in the universe. The worst edited fight scenes ever. wanna see real blockbuster editing, watch John Woo. Watch The Hunted. Watch Kill Bill. Watch Equilibrium. Watch Jackie Chan movies. But Nolan (except early masterpieces like Memento and Insomnia) and Villeneuve are bullshit directors riding on hype alone. If young Tarantino, Spielberg, Woo, Zemeckis etc., were around Villeneuve would be their personal assistant or a cashier at a supermarket.

I am speechless. This sound like an experience you will cherish for life
Just found out why I love both Arrival and Sicario, they both had the same editor!
And the same director, and the same composer (this in my opinion is also crucial)

Great video! I love how the editing is done in a way where the characters tell their story.
You too are a great editor my friend!

You are right, fixed.
I really appreciate all the work the reporters put in and sometimes the less popular ones touch on the best themes.

Wonderful video. Very engaging and inspiring. As a film editor I enjoyed this
Only reason an average viewer is patient with any of these long shots is sound design. Its the most important piece, IMO, its whats stopping my thumbing from double tapping on the screen
Thank you for giving a clear metrics for what feels different.
Brilliant video, keep doing this.

Yes, I am indeed an alien from beyond time.
Thank you, and good taste by the way, I even love Thom Yorke too.

This is really well made. I really enjoyed your use of music as well
Too loud background music!

NGL, the intro is very attractive. watched twice.
I think dune is very different from the bourne‘s, as is
Vertigo *is* doing something for the audience.
Maybe don't idolise so much and you'll get less disappointments.
I like to drink in every shot when watching a movie. The frenetic cuts in many movies today are jarring to me and wholly unsatisfying. Sicario is one of my favorite movies, perfectly cut.
Such an insightful video that takes us right into the minds of the talented people who made a great movie. Thank you so much for this !
Extremely well made. Thank you 🙏
I've also come to love long takes, it allows one to absorb and appreciate the moment
It´s quite meditative to watch movies with long shots
Very underrated channel
at 03:14 a person walking from left to right, cut to the same motion keeping the eyes flow nicely.
Nice catch! I like to play around with match cuts and little hidden bits in every video of mine which nobody notices 99% of the time, but it's fun for me.
@@JustOneMoreThing_YT awesome work, thank you for sharing your talent with us!
Amazing editing even on this yt content.
Love the channel, but you have the score too loud in your videos. The irony of this when you make film essays, I’m sure is not lost on you. Keep up the (almost) great work. 😊
Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep an eye out for that!
This video itself was a master piece
Amazing video ❤
Thank you, this was very interesting !
What is with that random blur effect through out your video? So distracting
Agree
Liked for many reasons, but most especially the ending 👌
Nice video man! try using a DE ESSER to equalize the audio in the video.
Thanks for the tip, I try to improve every time and learn more about sound editing, but unfortunately I can't fix earlier releases, so hopefully it won't happen in the future.
This background music is to much, makes it hard to watch.
It would be fine if it wasn’t for a 3 minute intro. Bro thinks he’s making Hotel California
smart video! thank you
Which font did you use for your thumbnail? Awesome Video btw.
great channel!
Thank you!
The music is annoying AF.
Man, how do you find those movie scenes, documentaries, and interviews you use in your videos? I want to start making videos about cinema too. Can you help me out?
Haha love the little heart on Joe walker, top video
Or i'm tweaking?? idk looks like it
You mean at 0:37? If so, that's a crown, because Joe Walker is the king.
sh*t dude! Love the channel. Subbed.
love the way you introduced at the piano at the 7min mark, fabulous editing! May I ask what the track is?
Thank you! It's Nocturne op.9 No.2 by Chopin.
It's a real shame you had some random people talking over your Beethoven remix music video - if you turned up the volume of the music a little more I wouldn't be able to hear a single thing that they said.
why? WHY the loud music in the back? Just WHY?!
dude wtf the music is so loud, i cant hear anything anyone is saying
Chris Nolan’s children!
I've comes to hate fast cuts, especially when they just keep coming, it's very jarring
adventure Shubham
I know what an Academy Awards is.
But what is an Oscar?
♥
What’s with the annoying background music 🤮🤮🤮
A think this video is well put together, thank you. I just don’t understand why you added the so called music in the first sections! It just go in the way of listening to the dialogue! You ruined it! Fortunately you got better otherwise I would have left and give you a 👎.
This music is so annoying
Oh, you put an annoying visual effect on all your videos. Kinda ruins them for me. 😢
The "music" in the background was so @#$! obnoxious I stopped watching after 2 minutes.
Please never use this music again. It’s atrocious.
How ironic this video has way too many cuts I couldn’t stand it and had to stop watching.
Could not watch because of the intrusive music. Will not pay attention to this channel in the future.
1917
Worst background music of any RUclips video. Please change your music taste
What a loud shi!!!ty background music make me leave the video
An oscar winning editor might be able to build tension without cutting but this videos editing was sure a headache to watch with its relentless cuts and failure to stick to its own title
too sad there was no good music in Dune
I think that Dune 2 is about the worst blockbuster editing in the universe. The worst edited fight scenes ever. wanna see real blockbuster editing, watch John Woo. Watch The Hunted. Watch Kill Bill. dude wheres ur oscar😂
