Okay so here's an interesting funfact for the people who don't exactly know about this! The lyrics "In Seoul, to the SKY" refers to the S.K.Y universities of South Korea. SKY is an acronym used to refer to the three most prestigious universities in South Korea: Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. The term is widely used in South Korea, both in media broadcast and by the universities themselves. So, basically students are trained all their lives to get into these 3 universities' and the process of "training" is really mentally and physically exhausting. You learn more about the importance of this universities or the pressure about entering these schools during the rise of bangtan ep! So, imma just stop here!
And remember about the capsule room on SKY castle.?? That shxx is real.... Just for those extreme parents who one thier child extreamly focus on study so they can get no 1 on every syllabus.. For the "better" way to get S.K.Y...tsktsktak....
To see someone get BTS, actually get it and see them react to them in the process is just so so refreshing!! Don't get me wrong anyone that likes their music without knowing the lyrics, just loving music is also so so so great. I am just so happy that you get them, that you like them, that you respect them, but above all that you genuinely seem to love what they do and they represent.
This song is another reason why BTS was not welcomed in Korea at the beginning of their career. This song is a critic to the Educational System in their country. It's well known that Korea is so competitive and studies are the priority but in a very exaggerated way. For a better understanding to their music you should absolutely react to BTS CRUSH COURSE 2020 by XCeleste 💜
Speaking as a Korean Army, I cannot agree that criticism of Korean society interfered with their careers. Rather, I think it was because the album target at the beginning was too maniac, and it was far from the fashion at the time, and it was a small company. But Korean society is not closed to criticism.
6:30 - What an amazing way of interpreting the set design! I have never thought of it that way and I have watched this MV so many times. The comment about the red face paint on the instructor was really cool too! N.O is one of my favorite MV. Thank you so much for the reaction!
N.O stands for no offense. N.O's music video and song are so underrated and BTS still perform it. They performed it at MAMA 2019 and for their online concert back in October and they included an amazing dance break. And if I remember correctly when they were trying to come up with the title for their song ON Jungkook recommended they name it ON because it was a reverse of N.O.
Love finding a reactor who really appreciates the brilliance of N.O. This is SUCH a good song. Really enjoyed your analysis and can't wait for your reaction to the next chapter of the documentary.
Ah finally someone who appreciates N.O. And just imagine they have so many songs that I’m sure you will appreciate. Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Wings era, Love Yourself series, Map of the Soul…. So.many.great.songs.
The one thing that I have impressive is that they released these type of songs before they got tons of supports/fans to sustain them. It was a very risky move to talk about this type of stuff when they were so new.
Oh my goshhhh I've been waiting for this!! Love love loved your reaction as always! Honestly, coming from a strict asian family, this has resonated so deep with me, and yes, it is definitely one of the most lyrically powerful songs that BTS has done! They really promoted fighting back against the societal hierarchy back when they began, back when rules for adolescents were much stricter - "Baepsae/Silver Spoon" comments on this too, if you're able to look past their amazing choreography and distracting hip thrusts lol. It is a millennial anthem and I really recommend a lyric and lyrics explained video if you've got a minute to spare. But honestly? I highly recommend checking out a couple of their underrated B-sides - "Paradise" is such an emotional anthem for a lot of ARMY, and I would LOVE to see your reaction to it!! :)
What you said about the spot you paused on in the beginning after they took the red pill about nerves and it showing going into the brain is interesting. I'd never rly thought of it before but BTS seem to like that style. They show the camera "going through a rainbow colored shirt sleeve in DNA, and while not quite the same camera effect, they did it in spring day, after Jin looks through the " porthole " window of the washing machine, it shows suga in the washing machine on the big pile of clothes in the dark with the light from the laundry mat shining on him. Oh and about the old architecture meaning old way of thinking, notice it's in the modern classroom and it's painted white to look new, like nothing has changed in forever but slap a new fresh white coat of paint and maybe you can fool people into not noticing it's outdated
N.O. is still my fav title song to this day, the whole O!RUL8, 2? album is just fantastic, to think that they released it just 3 months after debut is amazing, absolutely no clue how they pulled that comeback off so quick and seamlessly
LOL. You get geeked out? I get geeked out right along with you! (Btw, whoever's guiding you, giving you lists and everything, is doing a great job. Keep going.)
That was so fun watching you cheese that whole reaction😂 it’s not my favorite song but it still remains one of my favorite MVs of theirs! You’ll learn in RiseofBangtan, but it’s a critique of the Korean school system. Also, don’t forget to watch the deleted scenes and extra content for RiseofBangtan! Thanks for your reaction 💜
Yess, thank you for aappreciating this song and the meaaning behind it!! The line that always hits me the most is "We live the same life and have to become number one" - there's so much pressure on kids to be the best. At the same time there's so little space for individuality and that inevitably results in so much competition! Everyone is forced to do the same thing and everyone has to exceed, to excel, to be number one - that is impossible. Impossible standards! I love them for fighting for something like this. I think it was very courageous to make a first comeback like this, especially when nothing about your career was safe yet.
And trust me the live version of No More Dream & N.O, both in HYYH Concert, with a live band are epics! Watch the one with english subs. It hits differently.
@@iamsherlocked875 They performed N.O at MAMA 2019, not MMA. Although their MMA 2019 performance was incredible. 37 minute performance for an award show and I was never bored.

I’m 66 and growing up in my time women were not supposed to have dreams other than those of what the men of our Society chose for us. I wasn’t made that way. This song resonated with me on that level. Because these men have broken out of the box there society has set for them I can identify with them. BTS is a rabbit hole. Welcome to our rabbit hole. I’ve been Army since January 2014. I enjoy your reactions, they are insightful, and intelligent. Keep going!!
Frightening fact: Ages 15-29 have the highest combined suicide rate in South Korea. Unfortunately this drive to be the smartest has literally pushed many young people to the edge. BTS is bringing these issues out of the dark and shining light on this crippling situation. I salute them.
Although there is no MV, I would still love to see you react to Attack On BangTan, dance practice or live performance, it is one of their earliest songs like No/No More Dream/We are bulletproif pt. 2.
a fact: in order to get into the SKY universities (big 3 universities: Seoul University, Korea University, Yonsei University) Korean students are taught to study and study and do not do anything else from the beginning until they have to take the exam that establish which University you can attend. they have to study a lot and have no time to have fun, like, during the morning and afternoon they have school and after that academy. so basically they study all day until dinner time and then they have to do their homeworks for the next day. there's a lot of pressure on them, cause families work a lot for them so they can get attend the best schools in order to get in one of the SKY universities. If you'll be able to get there, your future is basically easier with a good job in no time.
I enjoy seeing your reactions because you help me to see things I never saw before, and it blows my mind. Even when they were so young and low budget, they can still be so creative and have so many layers on top of their great lyrics and catchy music. Thanks for giving BTS so much love. 😊💜
Oh, you were really having a good day with this one, right?! 😂 Well, me too - I really love this song. - I have NEVER heard anyone mention the architecture though. Well spotted! 😯👍 - I kinda miss this political type of song from them. Especially considering the huge platform they have now. - They recreated the staircase scene at MMA 2020 including the exact same line up with an empty space where Suga should have been. (He had shoulder surgery). Even the close up of the foot at the end of the stairs was the same. It was an intro to ON.
Great reaction, love watching how excited you get as you figure out new things. This song is a powerful statement about the culture in South Korea. I've watched several documentaries about the stress the youth go through with all the studying they do. It's very common for them to go to school all day and then have tutoring all evening until 9 or 10 pm. They have little to no life outside of school. They attribute a lot of this stress to the high suicide rate in their country. It is the number one cause of death in young people between the ages of 9 to 24. There is so much pressure on the youth to be perfect and to listen to authorities/parents. In other words, screw individualism and free thinking. Thank goodness BTS was and is out there helping the young (and old) to find their voices. South Korea also has one of the highest rates of alcoholism in the world. I think I understand why....conforming and perfectionism!
This is the first time I love a reactor reacting in BTS... he is really sincere and genuine to understand BTS songs... I already watch every reactions he has with BTS...
Your reaction is so awesome! - i love how you completely understand the full msg - i actually watched this mv several times but i missed how the architecture of the classroom is the classic greek design so definitely symbolizing tradition and the image that appeared to be nerves leading to the brain -- aft watching your reaction, i love this song even more. 💜
I love this song too, it’s so underrated! BTS have actually performed this quite recently a few times, which is really cool how they still pay respects to their first songs. By the way with Rise of Bangtan, I strongly suggest you react (or watch in your free time if it’s too much for you) to the bonus content/deleted scenes of each episode too, it adds a lot in my opinion
Oh and wait till you hear their b-side songs🤤 i think after checking all the MV'S you could react to a whole album for example each day a song from that album..🤔💜
i'm waaaay too late for this, but i need to say something: this song is one of the reasons why i became a fan. i already knew about bts previously, but hadn't watched their stuff yet and then they released boy in luv and i thought it was cool so i looked further into it. that was when i listened to this song, i was only thirteen years old and school was already planting the seeds of anxiety in me and this song helped me cope with a lot of it.
This right here is the song that made me ARMY. I watched this video and read the translation and nothing else mattered. I was lost and have never regretted that decision.
This is the music video that made me an ARMY. Before this, I was one of those who take the red pill without any question and it made me frustrated with my life. It changed my perspective in life. It was 2014, and I was never been the same.
Older BTS... Younger BTS.... N.O. is my BTS. It is one of my favourites. It's a stand out song for me. There are harsh repercussions when criticizing Government, Education, Society and Injustice. It's incredibly daring of them. They showed real courage in doing it. This is the song that always makes me want to hear JK rap more. Glad to hear you agreeing with me. P.S. "You look pretty" lol.
I frikin love this song! I am in my 50s and got the feeling/vibe of this song right away even though i didn't know at the time how strict their society is in regards to education. It will always be in my top 5 favorites. I have followed them since 2016 and have heard every song they have made. I will be forever grateful that i found them!
Actually as soon as I saw the background of it,it reminds me of N.O so I feel like there's really a connection, I thought it's just me who feel something but I guess there's also some Army's
This is one of my absolute favourite old era songs. The message they gave and what they risked by standing up and saying it is just BTS to a T. Society places so much importance on academia when more than ever whats needed is the healers, the humanitarians, the poets and the arts. Society has leant too far towards science when it needs to be balanced between this and the spiritual for want of a better word. There is room for everyone to excel at what they are good at..not to be shoved into others dreams. I really enjoyed this reaction ..kudos to you 👍
As many times I have watched this with other reactors, I have never noticed the Architecture on the walls, my eyes were proton BTS. You would be really good doing the Bangtang Universe. 💜💜💜💜💜💜
ohh your becoming one of my favorite reactor now just like the other reactor that i don't like at the beginning but after diving deeper to BTS rabbit hole he's now my favorite💜💜
OK, so their rebelliousness was against the RIGIDITY of their education system and society’s narrow definition of success that suffocated young people. You should note that they were not afraid of hard work, and they appreciated RIGOUR, like what idol trainee schedules imposed on them. So their message was a motivational one, for doing purposeful work, and not accepting status quo or meaningless drill. Later, BTS always encouraged youths to study (e.g. Suga & JK often say they wished they had studied English harder), and to value true education (both RM and Suga read widely and this inspires their songwriting; Jin & Jimin were often seen reading backstage, on trips) But education had to be pursued with a hopeful and proactive mindset that invests in meaningful individual creativity, not just following safe established paths charted by the older generation. Note that the older 6 of them are enrolled in Master’s Programme in Media & Business with Seoul Cyber University, which seems to enable them to turn their professional activities into academic credits). See other songs like Baepsae (Silver Spoon), which denounces social privilege, and Spine Breaker, which exposes the “spoilt and entitled” mentality of materialistic youth trends.
Just for context, and to show how important that song is, South Korea has one of the highest suicide rate among students due to the pressure that's put on them by the korean educationnal system and korean society as a whole. They're not just saying "i don't like school" to be relatable or "bad boy" or whatever, it's an incredibly important societal issue over there that they're being vocal about. "Although South Korean education consistently ranks near the top in international academic assessments such as PISA, the enormous stress and pressure on its students is considered by many to constitute child abuse. It has been blamed for high suicide rates in South Korea among those aged 10-19. Studies have shown that 46% of high school students in Seoul, South Korea are depressed due to academic stress, which leads to suicidal ideation and suicide attempts." - From Wikipedia, references articles and studies from 2014/2015 mainly (N.O. was released in 2014)
if i was still in high school, at a very confusing and challenging time for me as a young person, found this song, i probably would do things differently, lived differently, and end up in a different life than what i have right now. but i dont regret it either, as i still try my best with what i have.
You're totally right about Butter being a feel good song!!! Our guys have grown & evolved so much. If you watch their MVs in order from the beginning until now and the songs from different albums, you'll totally understand their story & messages. That's why no one can sing & perform BTS songs like BTS because that's their story and their message. Their genuine styles can't be copied because they're one of a kind. Also, you'll start to realize and connect their songs, albums, MVs, VCRs and LIVE performances together. There's so many references in this MV to later on songs....lol..."ON"....no pun intended. Did you notice the hands display in the background? Think about the scenes in the MV of "Fake Love." 😁💜
You’re on track! Watching their older MV first before going to their current ones. Continue watching The Rise of Bangtan. If you like these topics you should also watch Bapsae, Ddaeng, Silver Spoon, Pied Piper to name a few. I’m a 64 yr old Army! Wish we had BTS during my generation then I would have been happier. Love your reactions!
Your enthusiasm and excitement is so infectious, I love watching you geek out over their music and videos! I for one can’t wait for you to react to Baepsae and the DKDKTV explanation. It’s another societal critique with symbolic choreography. 💜💜💜
This video made my jaw drop, the epiphany you gave me with your interpretations, OMG!!! I never thought about this mv that way, and how the message is also incorporated in their choreo. Also at the last part, I realized that when Jimin was alone inside, the boys came rushing back as if to protect him, thus giving Jimin the strength to jump and fight their enemies for good. I think they tried to say that they’re stronger together??? That’s just my take 😊
It's so great to see you react to BTS. You actually take it in and understand the message. It's soooo mant songs I'm looking forward to see you react to now.
If you like their political songs... check out Baepsea; there is no official MV, but there is a dance practice (they are goofing off in it, but you can still get a sense of the choreo) AND you need to check out the explanation video by DKDKTV. They explain all of the word play and cultural references... THEN watch a live performance. :) Another biting song, lyrically, is Spine Breaker.
Yo los conocí con boy with luv y de ahí me fui a escuchar toda su discografía y me encantó. De sus canciones viejitas mi favorita es N.O, we are bulletproof pt2, Spine breaker, war of hormone, Jump, Just One Day y más. No entiendo como la gente que solo ha escuchado Dynamite y Butter dicen que toda su discografía suena igual. Los invitaría a que se den un recorrido desde un inicio y cunaod acaben, hablen 😊✌️
Thank you Josh for explaining this. I have never seen this video and then muchless trying to figure out from the beginning what the story line is but you did a great job making me understand it. I will be waiting for your next video so us newbies can walk down the road with you learning BTS.
I love this video. I agree it’s so good. Thank you. Thank you for reacting to this. This song does get slept on by so many people. However I think even though the video looks simple. It’s not.
I'm not high schooler anymore but this song still resonate into me. I remember in high school my dad told me to choose science because social study won't have future, so I did bcs I was scared of him, the stress level I endured until I often cried at class because the competition inside the class is no joke and somehow I had to fit something I suck at. then in the end of the day I got aacepted in economic major without test and my dad was happy too (while i clearly remember he despise social major) but I had to learn all social subjects from the beginning and strugle to keep up from other students since I waste my high school studying atom and microbacteries damn it 🤦🏻♀️

I cried watching this MV because of how I saw this happening in the lives of young people I used to mentor and teach.
I got goosebumps!!! This song is soo good
I love N.O. it's my favourite old school BTS song. It really is so powerful and still relevant to this day
I love this song too, it’s so underrated!
Your reaction, analysis, and excitement was so great to watch! We’ll see you in the next video. Bye! 💜
i'm waaaay too late for this, but i need to say something: this song is one of the reasons why i became a fan. i already knew about bts previously, but hadn't watched their stuff yet and then they released boy in luv and i thought it was cool so i looked further into it. that was when i listened to this song, i was only thirteen years old and school was already planting the seeds of anxiety in me and this song helped me cope with a lot of it.
aww ty for sharing. So glad u liked it and found BTS
Chapter 3 rise of bangtan will probably hit home with mental health note they discussed why this song was so important to release at that time
This is actually one of my favorite BTS’ songs of all time 🥰
Older BTS...
This is a video reaction I needed.
I frikin love this song! I am in my 50s and got the feeling/vibe of this song right away even though i didn't know at the time how strict their society is in regards to education. It will always be in my top 5 favorites. I have followed them since 2016 and have heard every song they have made. I will be forever grateful that i found them!
Loved this! You totally got it
Crazy good analysis & loooove the t-shirt 😂💜
MAMA 2019 is connected to this video. So many people don't make the connection from N.O to O.N.
N.O is my favourite old BTS song, the song itself of course but es[ecially MV is so phenomenal, I wish they would do something like that again
ohh your becoming one of my favorite reactor now just like the other reactor that i don't like at the beginning but after diving deeper to BTS rabbit hole he's now my favorite💜💜
I feel like I learn something new with how you interpret their music as well, good job I'm enjoying
N.O. is a masterpiece 💜
I know. N.O was one of the powerful songs of BTS. I can't wait for you to watch the Chapter 2 of Rise of Bangtan. N.O was an important part of that.
If you watch the Rise of bangtan chapter 3 you will get to know more about this song
I love how excited you get for their videos.. 🙈 it’s so fun to try and decode what they mean
When I first saw the music video, I cried. Because I sympathized with it so much. (I’m a Korean)
Love your reactions!
we love you and you are pretty. As others have commented, BTS likes to give nods to their old stuff. Good thing you are detail oriented.
That’s just my take 😊
56 year old ARMY from Singapore. Love your reaction. Thank you.💜
It's so great to see you react to BTS. You actually take it in and understand the message. It's soooo mant songs I'm looking forward to see you react to now.
THE BEST SONG OF BTS
Honestly I was really surprised
their live performance this song at MAMA 2019.
I love your analysis of this. I knew you would get and appreciate this song. I am also appreciating your excellent tee shirt collection!😁💜
It is SOOOOO Much fun to watch you enjoying this... I'm reliving my own journey thru you!! Thanks for sharing with us!!
I feel u how good this song this. Glad im with them since the beginning so i can hear this song from long ago💜 new subscriber here
Yo los conocí con boy with luv y de ahí me fui a escuchar toda su discografía y me encantó. De sus canciones viejitas mi favorita es N.O, we are bulletproof pt2, Spine breaker, war of hormone, Jump, Just One Day y más. No entiendo como la gente que solo ha escuchado Dynamite y Butter dicen que toda su discografía suena igual. Los invitaría a que se den un recorrido desde un inicio y cunaod acaben, hablen 😊✌️
As usual, you are pretty! This one and No more dream rules! These two are for grammy! No, they are better they are for life!
You know what you are one of the best song analysis of bts .. I love to watch Ur vedio
Thank you Josh for explaining this. I have never seen this video and then muchless trying to figure out from the beginning what the story line is but you did a great job making me understand it. I will be waiting for your next video so us newbies can walk down the road with you learning BTS.
you are pritty and love you too💜
I love this video. I agree it’s so good. Thank you. Thank you for reacting to this. This song does get slept on by so many people. However I think even though the video looks simple. It’s not.
I'm not high schooler anymore but this song still resonate into me. I remember in high school my dad told me to choose science because social study won't have future, so I did bcs I was scared of him, the stress level I endured until I often cried at class because the competition inside the class is no joke and somehow I had to fit something I suck at. then in the end of the day I got aacepted in economic major without test and my dad was happy too (while i clearly remember he despise social major) but I had to learn all social subjects from the beginning and strugle to keep up from other students since I waste my high school studying atom and microbacteries damn it 🤦🏻♀️
my fav song N.O
Reason why they got so much hate is they’re not normal for idol grub, the song not normal for new grub.
Your analyses are spot on. Great job.
Most people pause when Suga parts comes no matter what songs it is lol he is dope 🔥
