Thanks for the guide Aaron. I've been watching VGC stuff for a few years (on and off) and I'm excited for building my first team (I just got the game last week). Funnily enough from the start I knew I wanted a team with Galarian Weezing so that was my first bred perfect stat Pokemon.
Great job Aaron. I am excited to finally build and put a team into VGC. I was going to back in B&W, I had one up and ready to go but never entered for VGC or tournies so this year finally going to actually do it! Hope to see you up the ladder soon!
My VGC 2020 team-building guide is out! It's quite similar to some of the previous team-building guides I've done but is obviously updated for everything relevant to Sword/Shield and VGC 2020. It's a bit long so I do apologize but I hope you guys find it helpful. I'm aiming to get more guides out in the future that talk about specific parts of team-building (e.g. creating EV spreads), but hopefully, this will give anyone who's interested a good starting point. Hope you enjoy!
That brief comment u made about having integral mons that u only use in niche situations is really sleeper OP. Competitive Miltoic with Adrenaline orb is by far my version of this. Answers the heavy intimidate meta and also has access to healing via Recover/Life Dew, and Speed control. Sometimes just icy wind on mirror armor Corviknight is enough to set her up to do serious damage.
Yes, great point! Wish I had more time to talk about everything but was already cutting it kind of long, haha. I want to make a future video and go more in-depth about potential niche picks and how to find them/make them work
CybertronProductions Love your content man this vid is more than enough resource for newer players. We can wait a while for the next one! Hope to see you at some VGC events next year 😁
I can't wait to share this with all of my friends who are finally interested in VGC this year, you explained everything so much better than I could have so thank you!
I have never seen a video so organized. Both the video and the description. Needless to say, you clarified everything as well as a light at the end of the tunnel. Loved your content.
Never watched a video of yours before and was looking for someone 'new' to me that uploads sword & shield double ranked matched. So i clicked on this guide first to kinda 'see if I like your content'... Here am I not even 1minute into the video and I already subscribed and write a comment lmao Looking forward to see all of the content!
Just want to say thank you for this guide. Your tips about speed control and building around one Pokemon really helped me get to Master Ball Tier. I appreciate all of your work!
I happened to ask this few weeks back and then you delivered! And it was way better than I ever even hoped for. Thank you so much for this I wish you the very best. This kind of passion is rare and for now I can definetly say that you are putting it into good use. And we are all lucky to have you as a content creator
Thank you for mentioning the Showdown usage stats I made and shouting out my twitter! Glad you like them and I will absolutely try to keep it updated. (Showdown updates usage stats once a month.)
Man.. I played against you on battle spot twice (one time I actually made it into one of your videos!) in 2017-2018, you’ve been such an inspiration for me in competitive Pokémon. Heck, I made my first ever regional top 8 in 2016 after studying so much of your content. The energy you give the community and willingness to help others is unparalleled. I look forward to getting back into vgc this season after a 2 year hiatus and will definitely be watching and supporting your videos while I try to get back to where I was! Keep it up man🙂
9:42 I wanna say your "slots 5-6" on your team doesn't have to be reactive, they can just be different angles of attack. You were saying basically that I just wanted to frame it in more of a proactive manner. *nitpick over*
Cool. Im a subscriber now. Im a 32y pokemon fan, played for 20y (22 to be exact, start with 10), but never tryed play competitive. Your videos were recomended, and here i am, to check it, and learn it.
Thank you so much for this dude! Some really good information for people who want to get into VGC (like myself), delivered very clearly. Will definitely be referring back to this a lot :D
45:38 this happens a lot in Magic as well. Especially if you're starting out, just take something that you know works so you can figure out the actual mechanics and how stuff plays out. Like, ok you have an answer to this Corviknight, what are the issues with bringing it out and actually executing it. If you self build you're more likely to run into the situation where you don't have an answer and you just lose and learn less.
First thing first, I propose you come back to this video and read comments more frequently than with other videos. Because after we try and fail miserably, we need to ask you or ask each other LMAO Best pokemon video ever, love you!
Watched the first 45 mins TWICE, then read the last line "don't consider myself an amazing team builder". Sigh. Why do I started playing again, this will take longer than gacha grind
What a great video! Perfect guide for those who are interested in the doubles format or getting into competitive pokemon in general. I'm definitely recommending this to all of my friends who are getting into pokemon thanks to sword and shield. Happy Holidays!
I played Pokemon since Gen 1. I grow up with it but never thinked about getting into competitiv battling. Well, lets find out what an old dog like me can pull off with an guide like yours. You did an amazing Job with it such as even a total newbie like i got the Feeling to get his Team together and Perform decently with a lot of work and a bit of luck.
Shout out to you and your hard work! Finally getting the chance to buy the game this week when I come back from study abroad! Looking forward to the battles and growing as we explore on this channel :)
I've been playing on and off since 2014, and now I'm really excited to actually get the games and dive in and do this more often. It's something that i loved doing and have tried every year but kept falling off but i have faith I can continue to work on my vgc skills
Thank you for the heart, my biggest achievement actually is one time in 2015 i beat your brother in a tournament on showdown in the finals and it was with a team i created myself
I'm new to the competitive aspect of things. My friend really got me into it because she's a gym leader at PPL. I wanna learn teambuilding even if it's not on the diehard scale. I think I'm starting to grasp it but its a lot to take in.
Thank you! This guide really helped me with the team i'm building. I've always struggled with team synergy, but I feel like I have a better grasp on it now :)
I'd like to thank you for the work you have done, especially in explaining everything so well so that even new people like me can understand and follow all these kind of stuff. I've been following the "scene" since sun/moon but was only watching streams casually or messing around with friends. Since the launch of Sword & Shield I start following your channel and I really enjoy watching you. Really cool guy :)
Man I haven't played VGC seriously since 2016. The new meta looks fun so far. I actually want to learn it especially with a lot of old Pokemon coming back as well.
Just want to say thanks for all the awesome content. I started playing vgc casually back when x and y came out but I never really did a lot of it because it was hard to get good legendaries. With sword and shield having less legends (only type: null and silvally) and being all around easier to get and train pokemon I feel like I'm going to be doing more. So I just want to say thank you for continuing to make awesome, easy to understand guides all this time because I find them to be super user and informative.
Great video as always! I wanna add that sometimes letting someone else take a look at your team helps a lot in understanding its strengths and weaknesses. Forcing yourself to explain your choices to someone with a fresh perspective can do wonders in finding th missing piece
Yo this is super helpful, thank you so much for making it. Before watching I was trying to build the same team as Nails except I’m using special dragapult instead of chandelure.
You really are the best man! I love the long formed content btw as I really enjoy you doing your best to go over as much as you can in as much detail as possible. I've been watching you for a long time and these are always the videos I look forward to the most!
This is an amazing video that I'll be sure to reference (once I actually get to the post game) when I start building my team. The video is mostly about team building, and your target audience is new players to the scene, so I think my only criticism is that after watching/listening to your video, I still have no clue how to join events. Other than that, great video! I learned a lot!
You know, I always wanted to be a Fighting type contender in VGC, but...we all know having a sole typing in competitive is practically set up for failure. But it would be soooooo fun I bet!
For example of specialized non-traditional pokes... I have been running a water absorb lapras with freeze dry, thunder, hydro, protect. It can OHKO Dracophish, Seismitoad, Gastro, etc. and is a pretty good secondary counter to Corvinknight, Milotic.
I like to look at the pool of moves and pick one that I think it would be a great strategy. Then I find mons that have those moves and then build it out. Also good to have counter strategies to the most common teams. Like Xatu with room service item, as soon as it enters a tricked room, it can reverse it. It can also have tailwind tp have the option to boost speed instead. And lastly it has Nightmare Shade, where it can do moderate damage with 0 EVs invested into Attk or SpAttk
OMG how to customize your EV spread is my biggest weakness (I'm an OG that hasn't played since Gold/Silver so steeeeeep learning curve). I would love any in-depth custom EV spread teaching. That would be AMAZING!!!!
Here's a lapras set I've used a few times. You can change up the evs and item. Lapras @ Leftovers Ability: Water Absorb EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 68 SpA / 184 SpD Calm Nature IVs: 0 Atk / - Freeze-Dry - Life Dew - Helping Hand - Charm Immune to any water moves and they heal you, freeze dry is super effective against water pokemon so you don't need Bolt-Beam coverage on Lapras. Helping hand helps your team mates deal extra damage. Charm can be replaced but its also good for weakening physical attackers. Lastly Life Dew heals 25% to you and your team mate, when protecting or using Max Guard you can Life Dew can still heal them.
Awesome video! Next time consider breaking the video into a few parts, this way you can go into more detail about each subject and don’t have to worry about rushing through everything without getting too long.
I just want to add to the EV Spread section; some offensive moves utilize defense/sp defense to determine the amount of damage a move does. Something to consider. I can't think of any of these moves off the top of my head, but I know they exist.
I’m going to work on making a tailwind team. I have a team rn fully trained in evs and IVs but they don’t really synergize together. That’s going to change. I’m so glad this video popped up in my recommended lol
Rather than using Protect on a Choice User, you might as well use ANY support move. While not a Choiced user, I've been running Swords Dance + 3 attacks on my Hawlucha, and having the ability to Max Guard if I need to is fantastic.
I'll also mention Copperajah as a trick room attacker since there are other trick room attackers besides the ones in the core sample. - Great ability in Sheer Force as it fits perfectly with his movepool and speed for trick room - Access to High Horse Power/Earthquake (Depends on your team), Iron Head, Play Rough, Rock Slide, Zen Headbutt(All of these get affected by Sheer Force btw), and Power Whip for amazing type coverage as it hits most of the meta game. - Only main drawbacks are weakness to Ground, Fighting, and Fire, status affects, and fragile defenses, so mons like Light Clay Grimmnsarl, Hatterene, Clefable, and such make great partners to cover his weaknesses or use utility moves like Follow Me to keep them away from Copperajah - Oh and Protect. Protect is always good!
43:00 im currently thinking about using Obstagoon more, but I don't know in which niche it fits... Its a good physical attacker but there isn't a lot of interaction with the rest of the team, it just... Hits hard 😅 how do I implement it into a team/build around it, would be my question
I love the video, it's super helpful, but a random small note, I'd recommend switching the picture of indeedee in the graphic to a female instead of a male since I think most people are using female which has different stats and moves

Here's a lapras set I've used a few times. You can change up the evs and item.
Lapras @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 68 SpA / 184 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk /
- Freeze-Dry
- Life Dew
- Helping Hand
- Charm
Immune to any water moves and they heal you, freeze dry is super effective against water pokemon so you don't need Bolt-Beam coverage on Lapras. Helping hand helps your team mates deal extra damage. Charm can be replaced but its also good for weakening physical attackers. Lastly Life Dew heals 25% to you and your team mate, when protecting or using Max Guard you can Life Dew can still heal them.
Smeargle Rocks nwhy putting 4 atk evs in atk stats when the iv of your atk is 0? I think its better to put extra 4 evs to Spa
@@bisqueracaloy14 sorry I missed that when editing before. Put the 4 in def or sp.atk

- Access to High Horse Power/Earthquake (Depends on your team), Iron Head, Play Rough, Rock Slide, Zen Headbutt(All of these get affected by Sheer Force btw), and Power Whip for amazing type coverage as it hits most of the meta game.
- Only main drawbacks are weakness to Ground, Fighting, and Fire, status affects, and fragile defenses, so mons like Light Clay Grimmnsarl, Hatterene, Clefable, and such make great partners to cover his weaknesses or use utility moves like Follow Me to keep them away from Copperajah
- Oh and Protect. Protect is always good!
Too many weaknesses and very low defense stats. I personally tried it i have a gmax one
Frick, i'm one year late. I hope Aaron does this for VGC21 as well...
Not the hero we deserve but the hero we need!
I have always been interested in competitive but never fully got into it till sw&sh currently in master ball rank 42W and 16L
Apache what is your team? I can’t get past tier 5 50 wins 130 loses
I personally first made a team with my favorite pokemon and adjusted the team to what I though I was lacking after games
Good note! I didn't even realize I was using the male sprite. Thanks for the tip, will definitely do so in future videos!
