- I'm learning a new tune a day. Today I learned a reel that was suggested to me by a member of the online community tradconnect.com. He also sent me the track by which to learn it, which was piper Ronan Browne with Peter O'Laughlin on the album "The Southwest Wind," which is a beautiful album of unaccompanied Clare tunes. Beautiful stuff. I tried to imitate the drone from the uilleann pipe by tuning my fiddle's lowest string down to a D, so the strings are tuned DDAE.
POV: your music teacher told you to learn this over a week and now its five minutes til your class and your paniking...
Very nice job Katie! Thoroughly enjoyable. 💖
beautifully done
I also love drones in the right place. Sometimes they can detract from the melody but not in this case. I wish I could that quick little triplet thingy that's been eluding me. It gives it a nice effect.
Love it.
@fiddle4u Yeah, it's in G, but I liked the effect of the 5th D drone, like how Ronan Browne plays it on the pipes. I get the feeling it wasn't a winner! haha :)
@fiddle4u Thanks! I know it's a bit weird. Tuning the fiddle in odd ways is more common in old-time appalachian stuff. :)
@fiddle4u genius! I'll try that next time :)
@vladcount I'm learning them all by ear but sometimes I do transcribe them if I am learning a particularly difficult one.
Ey lassie, where be ye fingers??
Was this composed by Ed Reavy?
I love this one, I drop my G to D on Bonaparte's Retreat. Do you drop your E to a D as well in this tuning for the resonate effect? Bruce.
Hey Katie, do you do online fiddle lessons? I would love to learn this song, and learn from you! :)
I don't really teach much these days but if you wanted to do a skype lesson we could work something out. Shoot me an email - katiehendersonfiddle at gmail.
