the giveaway is that when Ibelin fights the Saracen swordsman, the man on the horse shouts orders at the Saracen swordsman to stop fighting. Which gives away that the man on the horse was in a position to give the swordsman orders.

@@whatarethose6064 The spear has always been superior to the sword, as the saying goes: Live by the sword, die by the spear.
It's unfair to fight against a spear using a sword as by the time you can close the distance with the spearman, he would already have stabbed you hundreds of times. That is why the preferred weapon during the time of knights was a spear or a lance, once the spear or lance was lost or destroyed the knights switched to their sword.

It was more of a religious thing. This scene takes place in the holy lands which has been forever contested by Muslims, and Christian’s, and later Jews. The Arab Saracans are a Muslim knight, and his Lord. They are undoubtedly a part of Saladin’s Muslim hoast there to take back Jerusalem and slaughter every Christian inside (revenge for an earlier massacre). By feudal laws any wild animal on a Lord’s land belonged to the lord. Obviously someone traveling through his land by horse does not have to surrender his horse- but Orlando’s character did not have a saddle for the horse and appeared disheveled. The knight argued that the horse obviously doesn’t belong to Orlando- and is therefore the knights property by land lord law. It’s a dumb argument that he likely doesn’t actually believe- but he’s looking for a reason to fight and kill this wandering Christian (who no doubt is a Crusader making pilgrimage to Jerusalem to fight the Muslim Jihadists. Arguing that he is a thief gives the knight legal and moral coverage to murder an unarmored, unmounted man.

It's an overlooked gem of a film... Definitely in my top 5 permanently... it Is overtly pro-Muslim... but even more so Pro-Peace... If you haven't seen it... definitely watch it (avoid the trailers... they suck anyway)... I think the film didn't do that well because it appeals to a different audience. It has enough action but is also loaded with philosophy....
!! Only Watch the directors-cut... which is about 3 hours. The directors cut TOTALLY Changes characters around... it's not just the typical deleted scenes...

It's always weird how the word "scimitar" doesn't actually describe a sword. But in this case, this is a Turkish sword called a kilij. The Muslim forces of the Second and Third Crusade were predominantly Seljuk Turks.

@@thegrimmretails3777 Right. Katana (刀) actually means "knife" in Japanese and Chinese; it's a single-edged blade. The specific sword we consider "katana" today is the uchigatana (打刀).
But there is no sword that is actually a scimitar. It just refers to oriental swords in general, which tended to be curved.
