Of all the shows I've seen on this subject no one comes close to your dignified demeanor and delivery which are impeccable. I've lost count of how many times I've listened to it. Totally compelling. Thanks again.
Thank you VERY MUCH for posting this epic story and narrating it so excitingly. Others have tried with this story but nowhere as good as you did. You had me on the edge of my seat by the way you told it.
I hope that I find you safe and well...Great shout Mary! Seven years have passed since your recommendation, and I have just now purchased this book on-line. Thank you.

Stephens Dygert I’m sure it will one day. If paramount can release that African movie Congo on bluray, then I’m sure paramount will come across the ghost and the darkness and release it
These Lions were extremely unique in their behavior. They stalked victims in a very tactful manner. It was as if they were doing it out of enjoyment. They were also unique that they were male Lions that didn't have manes.
To this day lions kill natives in Tanzania along major rodes on bikes and on foot. Speculation over 20 a year. A lady discovered why. Not year round. Killed in dry season when game moved away from water holes. Lions are territorial and do not move. So they have small game left.
Great info Steve! That make a lot of clear sense. Some historians say that the old 'slave trails' that run from the interior to the coasts, gave many large predatory creatures a penchant for human meat, viscera, and bone in the earlier days.

***** That's what I had heard before even coming upon this video. That's what interested me the most but it still scared the living daylights out of me lol!
kiikiikhan it is amazing and terrifying ur so correct :) its crazy how two lions can throw nature out of balance and claim so many lives. No matter how hard man tried the lions prevailed until their demise. It makes u step back and look at ur life and say "damn I got it good" compared to then. It is a good story.
***** Indeed. But I hate how we people are making animals extinct with overpopulation. I find the world without wilderness even more horrible than the cruelty of these 2 lions and anything animals can do. I love and respect nature. When me and my buddies went camping into the bear country, I was scared shittless during the night, but I wouldn't blame a bear for killing us:) We came to his home. He he was kind to let us leave:) Well I made weapons for protection, but I wouldn't kill an animal unless in self defence and for food:)
coming from you that's funny. any person with common sense would know that I was referring to the 2 lions of Tsavo. hence we are on that page/video. right? once again, you're not thinking.
JustinBieber They are real dumbass. They were reconstructed from the rugs that Col. Patterson had made them into. Although portions had to be substituted due to aging shrinkage, the bulk of the lions in the Chicago Field Museum are the real lions of Tsavo.
does anyone think Predator...when you see the lions lair in the film "Ghost and the Darkness" human skeletal remains kept as trophies all scattered round! its obvious those lions did it for the pleasure =/ ...
Yeh apparently they looked for this lair and were able to find the cave eventually, but found no skeletons or human remains..so they questioned if this was exaggerated. Hard to gauge which parts of the story are fact or fiction :s
Poor indians They are already been hunted by tigers and leopards in india that time! How pity they are also got hunted down by tsavo lions so far in africa
The voice read the foreword which mentions a 1996 film called "The Ghost and the Darkness" starring Val Kilmer (which the voice mentions by name), so unless Colonel Patterson haunts this world as a ghost with enough interest in modern cinema, then I don't think the voice is him.
I really don't know if this was reel but juts to listen to this story seems more like if i was ther but only one thing i cand get the full video i really whant to se the move thy had it on tv but i was working that night and i really am lots interesting in this story.
Because those workers were not only highly disposable, but training and equipping thousands of people to be competent with firearms of the period would cost, and would take quite a lot of time. Especially with language barriers.
I have no doubt that history shows from many witness that the col. shot two juvenile male lions that had started eating the thousands of workers camped around the railroad nothing bad about the col. but his accounts of the events are tainted by the typical british self serving upper class of the time government ghost writer I'm sure I would love to have met the col. and hear the humble version
yz450223 they were stuffed and still sit in a museum. recent test on their hair shows they ate at least 35 ppl. they think one lion 10 the other around 25. you may be tainted by your opinons of history viewed through the humanity of today.
They did but it assumed that both lions ate a majority of the victim but Patterson mentioned that the lions were very picky in what parts they ate and this is why when they tried to poison the lion it didn’t work as they didn’t eat enough of the bait for a lethal dose he said this to people who asked him about poisoning
Brits used Indians in such harsh and deadly conditions. Shame on you. At the same time salute to the brave Patterson, who risked his life to save his fellow men.
That's my exact take! This john Patterson is self aggrandizing making it sound like all other men there were mice scared to death of the savage cats....yikes! Why not also include the participation of others??? I am not buying his assumed heroism....

Excellent! Like watching the movie! Thank You!
I salute Lt. Colonel Patterson, a man of supreme courage.
I agree!

Luckily I have a good copy of the book. This narrative is very good I can vouch. Appreciation from India.
The book's editor, Peter Capstick, was a man-eater hunter himself in Africa. Check out his book "Death in the Long Grass."
he has a series, very good african books...
I hope that I find you safe and well...Great shout Mary! Seven years have passed since your recommendation, and I have just now purchased this book on-line. Thank you.

People are no match for any alpha predator I enjoyed it thanks for posting:)

These specific lions had tooth infections which prevented them from eating their normal prey
Those Lions Born to crate history and make a Hero like you ...really hats off to your braveness...

In conclusion...Indians must taste delicious!
They should have hired a group of Masai to hunt the lions.

Right. Mountain lions do though.
Can you just me the book;so I can read it myself ?
I have read it freebook app in playstore. Its more enjoyyable yi read it
Why didn't they hand out guns to everyone? Seems like that would have ended the problem almost immediately.
or at least get flash-lights, which were available, as Patterson mentions them during this tale, and attach some of them to guns?
One assumes you haven’t had first-hand experience of colonization. The empire kept a rigid monopoly on the possession of weapons

Ya the movie and the novel are both great and have their own strengths. Would you have rather never seen a movie based on the tale.
Agree, the book is better. The film is just for entertainment purposes and based very loosely on the facts.
