This was pretty much everything I wanted. I give it a 4/5. A massive tear rolled down the right side of my face at the end. It was beautiful. The only gripes I had were minor such as the Finn Wolfhard character that you mentioned and I felt there was a slight pacing issue. I felt it could have done with an extra 10-15 minutes. McKenna Grace learned how to use the proton pack pretty damn fast. There was no real misfiring like in the first movie where they destroyed the hotel banqueting room. It was all very convenient how she bumped into her brother and they chase the ghost. It didn’t take me out of the movie but I felt an extra scene with her trying and failing to use the equipment would have helped. Overall though I had a blast. My daughters loved it too. This is the difference when you get someone making a movie in a beloved franchise that is a fan of the source material. They respected what came before. They treated the original characters respectfully and brought in a refreshing batch of new characters without demeaning the old ones. I get a feeling Indiana Jones 5 is going to do the complete opposite to this. I hope I’m wrong but I’m getting a bad feeling . . .
That was a pure example of a film sequel done the RIGHT WAY. Yeah, It has pacing issues/problems. Sure. But man, It made up for it. Yeah the ending got me also. I had a friend of 28 years pass away and I did not get any closure. I totally related to that! 🥰 I wish it was up for streaming. I would love to watch it all over again!!!
I didn’t cry, but my 14 year old son couldn’t understand why I was so made up when we came out of the movies. I explained to him all the original characters from Ghostbusters were in it, and that really made me all nostalgic🙂👍🏼
I never could quite understand why so many people dislike the original sequel. I suppose being born in '84, my earlier memories were of me often confusing the two as a kid, forgetting which one had the Vigo painting & which had the marshmallow man. Don't get me wrong, at 37 I know the 1st is the superior film, however I really loved certain aspects of the sequel. The old abandoned train station (w/ghost train) scene was awesome. Winston's expression while it passes through him was so great. The whole excavation, underground river of slime scene, the part when the cops approach them digging & they try to lie their way out of why they're there. Egon: "Yo!" All great stuff!
Ghostbusters 2 is a great movie! The problem is it barrows too many beats from the first and the climax is kinda underwelming. I watched Ghostbuster 2 a lot more than the first as a kid and think it is underrated.
I was born in '85 and love GB II...I guess because it's what I remember the most from my childhood, along with the cartoon. However, as a 36 year old, I recognize that Ghostbusters is a superior movie...but Ghostbusters II is awesome.
This film had heart and it feels like it was made by someone who genuinely loves Ghostbusters. Almost every callback actually meant something to the story. it has some issues, but I really enjoyed this movie 7.7/10
Yes I teared up. This movie has so much heart and it’s funny as well. There were even moments that were genuinely creepy. I do feel there was a lot of nostalgia but I felt like it was done well. I loved the new characters enough to where I could see more films with them. I loved it.
I had a tear in my eye at the end. It was building throughout the movie that we were going to get the whole gang back together. And it didn't disappoint one bit. I thought it was the perfect way to bring back Egon by playing on the death of Harold Ramis and making him an unseen ghost playing tricks at first with his granddaughter. All the build-up worked perfectly for what was a brilliant and emotional ending, seeing the original Ghostbusters back together, albeit with a CG Egon. This is exactly what the true Ghostbusters fans wanted, and I really hope they continue this on with a sequel.
I went in with no expectations and just wanted to watch a fun movie. I came away feeling good with a smile on my face. Very well done. Now I need to go back and look for Easter eggs.
The essence of the finale ghostbusting climax special Fx was dominated and almost rendered insignificant just by the emotional presence of Harold as it converged into both the reel & real world in the minds of the captivated audience. His not talking and only showing facial expressions also added the emotional outburst. Gr8 to see all (4) of them virtually reunited after all these decades. This may well be the final time we'll ever see our heroes together. It's T.R.O. - Time Running Out for everyone, no question. Thank you for this epic scene which may never happened again.
Hopefully you stayed for the mid credit and after credit scene. Loved this movie and you are right that ending had some tears running for sure. Great review as always cody. 😎👍
This might be the best film I have seen this year. Such a great story and it really tugged at the heartstrings, I loved it. No, I didn't cry but I did have a lump in my throat the size of Texas. Great review, Cody, and you echoed everything I would have said.
I absolutely loved this movie! I saw it today and I did tear up by the end. I figured this was an homage as well as a contained own story by itself. I really had a great time with it and it was the first movie I'd seen that had me in tears and I was thankful for that. I would put this one right behind the original. The first one, you just can't beat it. Ghostbusters: Afterlife...very very close second.
It was filmed near where I used to live in Calgary Alberta Canada. They filmed it in three hills which is pretty much a superb of Calgary. I’m looking forward to checking this one out.
I loved it at the end when Egon shows up & says goodbye to his family & friends made me tear up he was the heart of the team & now his grandkids will be carrying on his legacy. Here's my idea for the sequel Egon's family relocate to NY where they live at the renovated firehouse Pheobe's the brains & the science, Trevor's the mechanic, Mr. Grooberson quit his job & relocated to NY as well because he's dating Callie & he decides to be a ghostbuster himself he helps Phoebe with the science & the ghosts. Trevor's gf Lucky is there as a Ghostbuster too & she ends up getting a job at Winston's company so she does end up getting out of the small town life the new team is guided by the original Ghostbusters Winston, Ray, Peter, Janine & even Dana. In this movie we will hopefully have Dana's son Oscar join the team as another old threat from the Ghostbuster's past tries to make a return or the threat maybe already there it was just bidding it's time. I would love for Rick Morranis to make an appearance in the sequel.
Man, some reviewers bash this movie because have too much nostalgia or nor enough nostalgia, bash it because it has the originals Ghostbusters too much time or not enough time. It is impossible to have these people happy. I really like this movie, and so did my 9 years old daughter. Looking forward to the next one.
I loved this movie so much. Really put on a smile on my face. While I see why someone could have the negatives you spoke on but this was a really good movie. I would love a sequel or two.
I think Ghostbusters (1984) is my all time favourite film, I like Ghostbusters II even though the more I think about it especially as I get older, it's not as great sadly. The 2009 game is fantastic and I enjoy the good seasons of Real Ghostbusters and some of the subsequent highlight episodes in that show and Extreme Ghostbusters really has its merits, especially when compared to the 2016 film. I didnt enjoy the reboot, but that's only because it wasnt the traditional Ghostbusters III that I longed for. Ghostbusters: Afterlife has its issues, but I loved it, it was hilarious and delightfully irreverent and it had the feel of the original in all the right ways and respectfully paid tribute to Harold Ramis
With the exception of the direct nods ("Who you gonna call", some music cues, stay puft, etc.) I think a lot of people are mistaking the film's direct continuation of the originals' mythology for "nostalgia". If this movie had come out in 1989 all the elements people nay say as nostalgia bait or fan service would be regarded as just continuity. I'm looking forward to watching all three films back to back test that theory and see how well this one fits in.
I enjoyed Ghostbusters: Afterlife, okay. Still, I wasn't disappointed like I was with (2016) and I can tell that there is a genuine attempt this time around to tell a meaningful story and pass the torch to a new generation of Ghostbusters. After all, who ya gonna call? ☎📞👻🚫
The one thing I didn't like and didn't understand about this film was that they introduced the idea that somehow Ivo Shandor was still alive-and played by JK Simmons, no less-and yet, they did nothing with him. Seconds after he rises from his coffin, Gozer rips him in half and that's it; he's out of the picture. They could have just left him out completely and the story would have been no different. That aside, really enjoyed the film. Could have stood to have had more jokes (i.e. more Paul Rudd), but overall a very satisfying film.
Enjoyed it a lot. I feel like the movie stands on its own well enough without all the nostalgia, so it doesnt bother me. I do with the theme played at some point, namely during the end when certain nostalgic thibgs happen.
As a huge fan of the original, I really liked this movie and the XD experience was great. Make sure to stay after the credits too because there are two scenes afterwords which will... you'll just have to wait and see.
Great movie but I wish Paul Rudd was Oscar. Janine, Annie Potts put on a proton pack. That would have been cool. Maybe the sequel will have a live action version of the Ecto-2 from the animated series and one of the villains from the series as the main villain.
I’m also kind of fatigued of Finn Wolfhard and was also surprised in a good way when I realised he wasn’t the lead. For me as a casual Ghostbusters fan it was a good movie but I felt great when I saw how much people enjoyed it. Great review!
I was 9 when the first film was released. So I'm a long time fan of ghostbusters. I absolutely loved this film. Really didn't disappoint and gave me the feelings I was looking for from it. Ace film.
I cried too. This is the second Jason Reitman film (Juno was the first and Jason has been Oscar nominated) and the second film that came out this year (Zack Snyder's Justice League) that made me cry.
Just saw it and loved it but agree that the movie was basically a Member Berry movie. I kept telling my friend during the film “member that thing!” “Memba that music?”
I had mixed feelings about the movie the first time I watched it, so I went back the next day and watched it again. The first time I was wrapped up in anticipating the roles the legacy characters were going to play and trying to spot Easter eggs. Overall I thought the story was good and the ending was very emotionally impactful. The second time I saw it I was able to just sit back and enjoy the movie without worrying about it being a total disappointment and absolutely loved it! The impact of the finale didn't hit nearly as hard the second time but I payed more attention to the story of the new characters and found I honestly enjoyed their story and was left wanting more! Overall as a long time fan I am satisfied if this is our final farewell, but will gladly support future projects if they maintain this trajectory.
Absolute fantastic follow up to the first 2 movie's just Loved it, this is the best 3rd Ghostbusters movie they could have made loved all the characters especially Phoebe and Podcast it had the 80s feel to it especially the nostalgia so well done this is how you bring back Ghostbusters 😁🤩
@@williamjr3401 To continue with the OG cast organically you needed a sequel way back in the 90's otherwise it wouldn't be a straight sequel. Looking at Afterlife and the Video Game there probably should've been more than two films in the first place to create a massive franchise. Problem now is Ramis is no longer around, the other guys are too old, a new movie needed younger talent and the filmmakers knew it.
@@williamjr3401 We've seen sequels come after lesser sequels like odd and even Star Trek movies. Your kind of fighting a losing battle in keeping the OG cast in their old age or replacing them, seeing a movie all about them now would be some New Tricks thing going on, in replacing them your either gonna get wannabes or something new that we don't like.
So this is the best Ghostbusters movie since the original comedy classic from 1984 which coincidentally is my birth year. #WhoAreYouGonnaCall 📞 #Ghostbusters 🚫👻
Well, if there was a "grown ass man" here, I'll be scared. 😉😂 Couldn't resist with the opening. But with me, didn't like it as much as the first, but I had fun with it, felt like the Ghostbusters 3 we never got before. Truly the correct way to pass the torch. And unlike the 2016, I'll be buying this one when it comes out. For me, I gave it a B.
The nostalgia and fan service was done pretty well in this film to me. It never became annoying or cringey. Now you look at a film like Halloween Kills where the nostalgia pandering and callbacks are just insufferable. A majority of that film is just characters recapping what happened 40 years ago to a point where the lazy writing made me angry.
There was a subtle genius to the way they handled Egon Spengler that I didn’t think this franchise was capable of, especially after Ghostbusters ((2016). And bonus, if you didn’t like Ghostbusters II, you can pretend it’s not canon as they make no reference to it here.
Another negative: All 4 of the young cast members magically come together at the end, wearing jumpsuits fitted for 6-foot tall men, and they also know how to use all of the equipment somehow...
My negative: the way those kids looked bored when the teacher played those horror movies. Don't they know a classic? Also if you're a guy & didn't like the 2016 remake you're considered sexist. This reboot however has a female lead & guys like this movie. One more thing you could take these 3 younger actors & put them in a Goonies sequel. Finn & McKena look like combination of Corey Feldman & Martha Plimpton while Podcast would be Data's son.
I loved this movie. Majority of it felt and reminded me of the classic 80’s kids adventure movies. The call backs and references did not exceed past to much. Being the same villain, from the first, I like how the slightly added to the lore and showed us things that explain why that villain appeared in the first film. The OG actors felt just like the characters out of the first two movies. Overall the story was a great one to bring Ghostbusters back to life. I hope we get a sequel as these characters weren’t annoying or hated. A sequel can really bring to life a new villain and give us more of the OG characters teaching the young individuals. All the characters were fun, funny, entertaining and some brought the emotion. Definitely gonna be a “go out and buy” to the collection. Extra: honestly I would love the new group to be McKenna, podcast, fins character, and Paul Rudd. Idk why that makes sense to me but it does. Let McKenna be Harold, podcast is Dan, the brother is bill murray as he doesn’t seem to care like his character does, and let Paul Rudd be Paul Rudd
Flawed? Yes Uneven? Yes Best Ghostbusters since 1984? Yes I think this movie will appeal to legacy fans and new recruits also. The way they deal with the passing of Harold Ramis is poignant and well handled. The post credits scenes (yes there is 2) are great 🙂 highly recommended 🙂

This is an excellent review of the entire series. My faves are the 1984 original and Afterlife.
I definitely cried. The ending was so sweet and a good tribute to Harold Ramis.
A tear or two were definitely shed and I'm not afraid to admit it.
To quote Zombieland, I haven't cried that much since Titanic

That ONE moment in the movie felt like the best fan service well-served since The Mandalorian Season 2. Can you guess which moment I mean?

Absolute fantastic follow up to the first 2 movie's just Loved it, this is the best 3rd Ghostbusters movie they could have made loved all the characters especially Phoebe and Podcast it had the 80s feel to it especially the nostalgia so well done this is how you bring back Ghostbusters 😁🤩
A large reason for it starring kids and being family friendly was due to it being in development hell for so long.
Well i might see this with my family during thanksgiving.
I think it might be time for Cody to update the still photos of himself he uses for the final rating. He looks way too different.
I loved it so much and I loved the nostalgia as i always do . I am also a HUGE FAN of Ghostbusters 2 always have been .
So this is the best Ghostbusters movie since the original comedy classic from 1984 which coincidentally is my birth year. #WhoAreYouGonnaCall 📞 #Ghostbusters 🚫👻
My birth year too
Well, if there was a "grown ass man" here, I'll be scared.
Jason Reitman hit a Ken Griffey Jr type home run with ghostbusters afterlife plus it was like the goonies + ghostbusters
I loved Ghostbusters Afterlife, heartwarming, fun, visually exciting and new and fresh too.
They showed deleted scenes in the trailers like Phoebe being bullied at school.
That was tough at the end to not cry 😢 in front of my wife 😂
TOTALLY cried at the end of GB:Afterlife
There was a subtle genius to the way they handled Egon Spengler that I didn’t think this franchise was capable of, especially after Ghostbusters ((2016). And bonus, if you didn’t like Ghostbusters II, you can pretend it’s not canon as they make no reference to it here.
Except for the book store
Another negative: All 4 of the young cast members magically come together at the end, wearing jumpsuits fitted for 6-foot tall men, and they also know how to use all of the equipment somehow...
I have to say this , the family touch is not Ghostbusters 2 fault or the Macarthy movie but the cartoon that took it in that direction.
I'm sure
It is definitely a love letter to the original.
Can't wait to see it tomorrow
I’m going to see it later
There was a cool Chucky cameo in there which I liked
Nice shirt!
Flawed? Yes
Uneven? Yes
Best Ghostbusters since 1984? Yes
I think this movie will appeal to legacy fans and new recruits also. The way they deal with the passing of Harold Ramis is poignant and well handled.
The post credits scenes (yes there is 2) are great 🙂
highly recommended 🙂
I really enjoyed the movie and I agree it has a lot of heart!
I really enjoyed the movie as a whole, but I would have preferred different bad guys... trying not to spoil so I'll leave it there.
