These were really special to me. As a child in the 80's I'd travel on these from Swanwick to Southampton and in the early 2000's I'd travel Fratton to Woolston. All the memories I have will stay with me for life. The sounds of clicking and shuddering while stationary. The sparks that flew off when it had been snowing on the tracks. The time an idiot threw a rock through the window in a packed carriage at St Denys Station that missed me by inches. They were just good, solid trains.
+wrong-e Yep. It was a good time for railway enthusiasts. I feel lucky to have been a part of the journey. I knew those days were numbered so I savored every moment.
So many memories of these as a child. I miss seeing going past because they have such a classic distinctive look and I miss all the sounds of the slams and the clunking and squeaking as the trains roll along the tracks. Even though I miss all those nostalgic things I do prefer travelling on the current trains, they are a lot more welcoming on the inside and they feel more spacious despite there being more seats.
Great video! I used to live near Eastleigh and visit regularly when I got into trains when I was 8, back in 1984! The sound of these units take me right back!
This is great footage . The 158 and 442 sets were good to see but the 450 desiro sets were yuk for these great old school shots. Great vid as I did enjoyed it so much
These trains have been gone for a decade and they already seem like ancient history...I used to enjoy seeing the slam-doors at Wokingham (working the Reading to London Victoria route) as well as the early DMUs working the Reading to Ash and later Gatwick routes.
@@kimifur My hometown station was actually Crowthorne but I was very familiar with Wokingham. Spent a lot of time on the footbridge behind the bowling alley near the junction. Back in the day, Wokingham FC used to play at a small stadium between the tracks, and there was even a small rollerskating rink that was out of use by the time I was growing up. All long gone now, like the trains I used to enjoy seeing.
@@RoadCone411 I remember Wokingham Town FC's grounds. It's a housing estate now. :( Lots of new redevelopment around the Elms Field/Carnival Pool there. Some of it is good, and I agree a lot of the facilities were crumbling and needed replacement, but they cut down several old oak trees to create the new development.
These slam door trains are the best, the only reason they've been wiped out is because of health and safety issues. For example you can literally open the doors while the trains are at like 90 mph or something along the lines, which proved very dangerous. However these trains may be gone but will not be forgotten
I used to travel on those Slam Doors with South West Trains between Winchester and London Waterloo in 2002 and 2003 when I went home from school and back at the Weekends then. The seats on those trains were very comfortable but when those trains move off, they jolt a lot and they were noisy when picking up speed and braking, slowing down to a signal or station plus applying the emergency brakes when arriving at a terminus Station like London Waterloo. These trains do bring me so many memories.
Simon, thanks for your comments regarding your memories. The last fifteen years have gone so quickly but it is good to look back fondly on these old trains and I hope this video managed to do that for you.
Good old slammers. Apart from the sounds mentioned earlier they had a nice sounding horn that made a pleasing pharp sound as opposed to those 'orrible loud all or nothing things that the 450s/444s have.
The few train that still have this types of doors are great, I'm 13 but I want them on all trains, u can open a window and get fresh air on the go, and open before it's stopes if ur in a rush! BRING BACK BR!!
If I'd known, in '05, that they'd be phasing out the slam-doors, and I'd had a lot of money, I'd have bought every single carriage heading for the scrap-heap, had them shipped to Australia, and perhaps done them up. It happened over here - some bloke here in Sydney bought old trains from Melbourne, and ended up being asked to give them back when Melbourne had a shortage of trains!
I’d love that too. I’m unfortunately too young to have experienced the amazing slam doors but I fortunately commute on 315s everyday and they’re mechanically very similar to the slam doors and I love them
Ah, Excellent! I haven't been on one of these since I left England in '98. I was only 8, and spent most of my time on class 313s or 455s, but I remember the slam-doors so fondly. I went back to England for a holiday in '04, and travelled on an SWT 455, but, damn it, I missed my last opportunity to travel on one of these. @#$&^&*! They'll never truly replace the slam-doors. Any new train is only a downgrade. Why does everything need to be so safe these days? Travelling should be fun.
I HATE the new trains. When I was a little boy I used to like flushing the toilet onto innocent people on the way into charing cross. No more of that nowadays :(
@@chrissanders5990 lol naaaah.... tbh I’m also in a video (that I can’t find anymore) of a slammer pulling into Eastleigh, my head out the guards van watching her in. It was just weird is all.
cool to see what southwest trains looked like before they got upgraded to automatic doors.... ide rather take slam door trains like the other day when the train was about to leave and i missed it because the doors wouldnt open again after they closed if it was a slam door i could have got on anyway..!
Maybe I'm on my own but I must say, good riddance to such outdated and dangerous rolling stock, I'll stop using trains if they are reintroduced. For people who really miss that "clunk" then there is always the Class 43 and its Mark 3 rolling stock- thank God the doors are not next to the seats on those. Just my opinion.

Bloody hell I miss these old girls...
Nothing else drove like them - for all the faults, they would always get you home.

Wokingham is my childhood home station. I took so many slam-door trains in my teens, around 1996-2002. Miss these so much!

Couldn't be the only reason, since some of the later slam-doors (or maybe it was retrofits?) had central locking. But yeah, it was a concern for sure.

I wish that for one day all automatic door trains disappeared and these awesome slam doors would re appear!

The danger was the thrill. Amazing trains. down to the noise the doors made slamming...
You cannot beat a bit of flange.
Ryan Garritty-- so very true!!

He bought them for AU$2,600 (GBP 1,205) each, and was paid $60,000 (GBP 27,815) for three of them!
