Adjusting Noisy Disc Brakes on an Electric Scooter

  • It's quite common to have an intermittent rubbing/rasping sound on any vehicle fitted with mechanical disc brakes, especially on electric scooters.
    It almost sounds as though something is not correctly aligned.
    However the likelihood is it can be remedied with this quick fix.
    NOTE: This procedure does not require adjustment of the brake cable. Only do so if there is slight pad wear or excessive play in the brake lever.

    • @Logan-jb3uo
      @Logan-jb3uo Год назад

      I had this issue. what happened was some idiot in the assembly factory got a little to excited with the bolt driver. I had to have my local scooter/bike shop take it out with an impact drill. (my biggest advice for scooter people is buy your scooter from a local shop so you can always take it back for repair)

      @@Logan-jb3uo Thank you for the advice, very helpful but I got the bolts out on my own. After getting them out, seems as if someone got lock tight and dipped the bolts in it haha.

    • @Logan-jb3uo
      @Logan-jb3uo Год назад

      @@v6_stone511 oh yeah man I'm sorry I didn't even think about that. If they used locktight then they probably recommend re applying on that bolt then. I have a Vsett 9+ so some bolts get locktight some do not. My rule of thumb is if was on it before re apply again.

    This is the only instruction I found on youtube that works. Love the simple explanation although I messed it up the first time. My brakes are on the left side of the wheel and I was still tightening the left nut first (the front) which does not work. Need to tighten the rear nut first with the brakes engaged.
    Thanks so much for saving me time and sweat. I even asked the vendor for instructions and it just talks about loosening the nuts and wiggling till it doesn't make noise. Well, it keeps making noise no matter what with those instructions.

Insofar as I'm aware, the rear/brake flashing light MUST be active in order for regen to engage if it's on the scooter (a [micro] switch engaged with the use of the brake level), so always ensure that not alone is the brake fully functional but also that circuit remains active, after the adjustment. @@marcusoroberts Wildo Marcus. Y'know, years ago (when I was around 12), my favourite part of Saturday mornings (after a bit of football while avoiding doing school homework) was doing the car checks with my Dad - he gave me some of the best advice I've ever heard (a wise man, with a fantastic sense of humour - still miss that lad, R.I.P.) - "After you've done all the checks, when you sit in the driver seat, always - always - make sure you're comfortable - if you're not, you'll get distracted. Which is dangerous - the same when you cycle - you always make sure you're ok before you let rip". How true - I stopped driving years ago (never really took to it, so don't need/have a car now - my trusty eBike is perfect for my needs) but I realised that when cycling (and therefore scootering), it's best to be certain we're physically/mentally good and try to achieve a far greater sense of situational awareness when we're travelling - plus the realisation that sometimes simply stopping, dismounting, crossing the road then continuing on the bike/scooter is the best/safest option - nothing wrong with that!. When scootering, always - always - bear in mind others also use bicycle lanes/roads etc. It makes sense. And remember kiddies - "No helmet? NO WAY!". "Go n'eirigh an bóthar libh, a chairde" (yep - that's todays freebie Irish lesson). Enjoy the trip!

    • @marcusoroberts
      @marcusoroberts  5 лет назад +1

      You could try swapping the controller output cables so that the rear and front motors are opposite. This will isolate whether there is a problem in the front motor, the wires or controller. There might be a short circuit between the wire for the light and the front motor power. Let me know if you find the problem.

    hi marcus,. i got one of those chinese scooters with front and rear discs, front breaks are ok, however when i adjusted the actually calipers and brought them closer, they would rub badly on the rear disc, when i loosened them up a bit to leave space for the disc between them, they are then too far away for actual friction of the disc,i am currently riding with only i disc break that actually works, how do i go about fixing the rear one

    • @marcusoroberts
      @marcusoroberts  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Alon. It's only ever the rear brake that causes the problem. Ok I will try to assist. Slacken off the 2 bolts on the top of the brake caliper enough so that it moves just little. Squeeze the brake lever and keep it squeezed (might need another person) and then tighten the rear bolt but not overtighten so it doesn't move, just to keep the caliper from moving. Rotate wheel backward and find the sweetspot where the brake grips and doesn't make a sound. Then tighten front bolt all the way and return to the back bolt and retighten.
      If it really doesn't grip the brake discs at all then you might have to do cable adjustment. Start with the caliper end and pull the cable through until you the point where the wheel becomes slower to rotate without pulling the lever. Set it there then micro adjust at the lever.
      Please do shout if I can help more. Don't go riding with only one brake mate!

    • @marcusoroberts
      @marcusoroberts  4 года назад +1

    Hello Marcus, thank you for sharing. we have the same scooter viper duel 2000. but i have a problem with mine, the front wheel is a little bit wiggle when i go 50 kph above it's very hard to control because the vibration of the front wheel is strong. Could you please help me about this. Thank you very much in advance.

    • @marcusoroberts
      @marcusoroberts  6 лет назад

      Hi Wenceslao, is the wiggle definitely from the wheel or is it from the handlebar stem? Also, is it a constant sideways wiggle above 50 or a knocking/rumbling thing. And does it happen with the front motor on and off? Hope that makes sense. I will also do some higher speed testing at the weekend to see if I can replicate. Thanks bro'.

    • @wencywency9457
      @wencywency9457 6 лет назад

      Marcus Roberts i tried to check it very carefully yesterday and i found out that the rim is aligned but the tyre and the disc rotor are wiggled. So i think i will change the tyre and try to align the disc rotor but it's a lot of work. What do you think the best idea? Do you know where i can buy the tyre if ever? Thanks for the reply bro.

    • @marcusoroberts
      @marcusoroberts  6 лет назад

      Hi Wenceslao, did you resolve this problem? If not, did you try putting the scooter on a block and turn the front wheel without power, and also turning at high speed with power? Does the problem only occur under load? I think if the tyre has around 45psi and has no deformities then that's not the problem but you can get 2.50 x 10 tyres here:
      www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kenda-Tyre-2-50-x-10-Inch-4-Ply-Rating-Scooter-Moped-Classic-K-313-C-10-001-NOS/263512017072?epid=17010288938&hash=item3d5a8a48b0:g:DG8AAOSwUn9aF19F
      I think 2.75 x 10 tyres also fit and are slightly wider profile.
      Perhaps the wheel might need balancing if the wobble is high speed? I don't think there are places you can do this professionally but you could try to balance through trial and error.

    • @marcusoroberts
      @marcusoroberts  3 года назад

      @Pedro, it's a good question. The way the wheel rotates forward you only check the front of the brake pad touching the disc first. This is usually over biased and makes the squeal sound. Rotating the wheel backwards ensures the 'negative toe' or 'toe-out' is neutral. The pad should hit the disc at the same time. Hope it helps.

      Hiya mate, you probably already tried it, but have you checked that the hex bolts on the hub are tight and evenly torqued? Most hubs have 6 hex bolts on the inner and/or outer rim. I heard of someone who described the same problem as you, and one of the hex bolts was not quite tight. I guess the axle on the hub is secure too and the tire is about 50 psi? It's very unlikely to be a warped wheel rim. Let me know if you find the problem bro'.

      Is it a dual motor scooter or has it a motor on the front wheel? if yes, then you need to run it on a block to see if it turns the wheel as expected. Then turn the front motor off and turn the wheel and check for friction. It will either be the brake or the bearing. Detach the brake calliper an see if it still rubs, then it's the bearing.
