As someone who grew up in San Jose, I am hella stoked to see this! I know it is very, very, distantly based on true events, but I'm looking forward to the cinematic exploration of Llanda Villa.
This movie is the greatest farce that I ever have seen. My grandparents were the live-in caretakers and managers of the house for 36 yrs. I spent my summer vacations there from a very small child. Granted, it says that this was based loosely upon facts. Her new owners neice was named Mrs Brown and hired my grandfather. My family lived there when Mrs. Brown was selling off the furniture in the house. There were no doors nailed shut to keep spirits in. This was not even filmed in the house, rather used for short moments over a four day period there. They could not make the full movie there bc the rooms were far to small to accomidate actors and a film crew, so most filming took place in Australia. The bell ringing was the Houses bell. But everything else was pure rubbish. Sarah was trapped in one of her 13 bedrooms for several days before her servants finally found her after the 1906 earthquake. Even the grounds were filmed elsewhere. If you like horror films, this is ok, but do not expect any historical accuracy in it. I do not recomend this film at all. I'm actually surprised that Ms Mirren accepted this role, she has been a noteworthy star in many academy worthy films, and this does her no service at all. After 36yrs, ( which would make us living there, 2yrs longer than Sarah herself bc after the 1906 earthquake she lived with a few servants, for two years, on a river barge while the house was cleaned up and repaired), I was the last member of my family to be of service to the house as a tour guide. I left shortly before the refurbishment of the house before our nations 200 year anniversary and the house recognized as a California historical site. My family were also the only family in the entire world to live there that long. This film was a sham of Sarah's time there. To prove my claim, do a search in you tube of Lilian Gish and Winchester house, together. At the very end of this black and white documentary, you will see the name John Marx, my grandfather being thanked for his help in the making of the documentary.

Amazing performances by the cast, it has its few scary well placed moments in between a psychological horror story. That kid, damn his possession was the scariest part of the story. Well done atmospheric setting for the story, it reminded me of the Lady In Black as well.
It’s a shame that no one remembers Sarah for who she was an intelligent, artistic, ahead of her time woman who was NOT haunted by ghosts - this “based on a true story” movie is utter crap. I just saw this today, it starts slow and boring, very hard to believe any of it really happened. I've been there, it's a neat and quirky house. Kept me entertained for 90 min at least
It's one of those "historical" movies that managed to scrape away almost all of the history, only to replace it with jump scares, creaky violins, and "creepy" children. That's a real shame, since the real story actually was interesting.

ive been to winchester house. it was over 10 years ago. odk if there still doing tours but its in the bay are and a must see if your in the are and there still doing tours. the back story of the woman and the house is awsome. and im pretty sure she was like 3 or 4 foot tall. i donth think the woman playing her looks that small
I just saw this today, it starts slow and boring, very hard to believe any of it really happened. I've been there, it's a neat and quirky house. Kept me entertained for 90 min at least

I can't stress enough how non scary this movie is. Just some jump scares nothing super chilling.

It's one of those "historical" movies that managed to scrape away almost all of the history, only to replace it with jump scares, creaky violins, and "creepy" children. That's a real shame, since the real story actually was interesting.
