Polk PSW505 Repair - Low or No Audio Output

  • Quick video on repairing the Polk PSW505 Subwoofer. I have had this for about 6 years and the audio output on it recently was really low. Taking it to the bench, no surprises here it had bad capacitors. After replacing all of them it was back to full audio output.
If you leave it on all the time in standby, the power supply is still running. It generates heat inside and with nowhere for it to go, the cheap capacitors just cook and go bad. Higher quality capacitors would have not failed as quickly as the cheap ones in this unit.
I would recommend replacing every capacitor in this unit with high quality 105C rated capacitors, there is around 20 in total. The three large capacitors on the switching supply generally don't go bad and mine tested good. If you wanted to replace them too, it is the right thing to do as I will do as well.

So check it out....I found my 505 at a thrift store, clerk complained it didn't work. So I told her I'd give her 5 bucks to free her of the burden of throwing it out which they were about to do! Saw this video, confirmed that it had the same issue and decided to call a Polk rep...aaaand boom! I should expect my supply on a DHL flight, from San Diaaago,(a whales vagina) FIRST CLASS in 2-6 weeks!
Best 5 bucks I ever spent!

Thanks for the vid! Just replaced all my caps and the sub is working perfect again. All for $15. For those interested I used Nichicon:
    - UPW1H470MED1TD
    - UPW1V4R7MDD1TD
    - UPW1H220MDD1TA
    - UPW1V101MPD
Also, you don’t need those exact caps. Any 105C with long hour ratings should work. Lead spacing on the board is 5.5mm but you can used 2.5mm or 3.5mm. The ratings are:
    - 4.7uf x 35V
    - 47uf x 50V
    - 22uf x 50V
    - 100uf x 35V
    Good luck!

Have a PSW505 unit that needs the caps replaced. Any chance you can provide the qty for each?

@@kenkostick4127 There were multiple revisions so I'm not sure if ours are the same. I also didn't replace any on the power supply board as they were fine, but I used:
      4x - 4.7uf
      5x - 47uf
      1x - 22uf
      3x - 100uf

@stoplooking Thank you for the reply. In review of capacitor options, I'm finding various diameters and heights. Any specifics for the ones you replaced?

I have two of these. The first one failed some months ago, and since it was still in warranty Polk sent a replacement power supply board. That solved the problem, but it never sounded as good as the original did. And then yesterday, the second one (which I use with my computer) died. Before its death, that one sounded incredible. I must have had it very well adjusted for that environment. Consequently, I am done with this and have bought a non-Polk replacement for the computer which should arrive in a few days. Perhaps I will try to replace caps on the dead ps board, but I find that the time required to procure parts, dis- and reassemble, and swap parts is probably not work my hourly pay rate. So more than likely, this second dead subwoofer will just sit around unusued until I can work up the nerve to just dispose of it. On the other had, it does have a perfectly good driver and could be externally powered. Maybe that's good enough reason to let it clutter my space a while longer.

Not sure if anyone still needs information, but I just mapped out my capacitors on my AMC-PSW505U Lot# 3113133
Voltage, Capacitance, quantity on my boards: (your model might be different) Also, not all of them will be bad/defective. I actually noticed that one of my capacitors was installed backwards.
    50v 22uF - 11
    50v 4.7uF - 2
    35v 100uF - 1
    50v 10uF - 2
    50v 47uF -3
    16v 330uF - 1
    25v 470uF - 2
    25v 220uF - 2

90 percent of the time it's the power supply that goes.. the amp plate if any one wondering is called a bash amp you can still buy a new plate. from parts express 300w and 500w available it has the exact same boards the plate it self looks different because it's under the bash name. At one point every sub woofer manufacturer used this amp just look for the name bash on the plate. If there no bash label on the plate the company charge brand of amp plates like the newer 505 polks there not the same amp plate or boards . In my opinion the newer one are even worse with even more problems and more difficult to repair. 👍✌️💯

Are all the caps you replaced the same value? Please link the caps if you got them at Parts Express or where ever. I need to do this to mine. VERY low output. I can hardly hear output but there is some there.

There's no guarantee that your sub is the exact same revision and may have different capacitors. It's more work, but making the part list yourself is the best way to go. If you're in the states, order from Mouser or Digikey

Cheap ass Chinese capacitors. Does anyone know if the other SubWoofers manufacturers have the same problem with the amps burning out due to cheap ass Chinese caps?

    • @jaydoublebusy
      @jaydoublebusy 2 года назад

Chinese capacitors are the absolute worst In the 70s they werent even useable even brand new

    • @rebootedelectronics
      @rebootedelectronics Год назад

Pretty much all of them that I've worked on have cheap Chinese caps in them. Polk Audio, Klipsch, Infinity, you name it. A lot of the amps are made by a third party and are actually interchangeable between brands
