  • Everyday life can make the trail seem far away. To go backpacking you need time. Time to plan. Probably some time to travel. You need time to hike! But hopefully, you have at least one incredible trail within reach - the kind of trail you can get away to for a quick weekend trip. For us, it's the Superior Hiking Trail, also known as the SHT.
    We've been hiking the Superior Hiking Trail for a few years now. In fact, it was the trail we hiked on our first real backpacking trip. It's the perfect blend of pristine natural areas and accessibility. Located on Minnesota's famous North Shore, just a few hours from the Twin Cities, it's great for short trips. This footpath's varied terrain, rugged northern beauty, and friendly shuttle service, keep us coming back for more.
    When we were new to backpacking, the Superior Hiking Trail was a fantastic place to build our skills and gain experience. Numerous trips on the trail prepared us for more challenging and remote backpacking adventures like the Sierras ( • Yosemite Backpacking (... ) and Rockies (backpackerbrot.... Every season the Superior Hiking Trail is our training ground and our home in the northern woods.
    If you're ever in Minnesota, we highly recommend checking out this trail. But wherever you are, we encourage you to find YOUR weekend trail. When you do, or if you already have, share it with us! We'd love to hear about that favorite trail you visit time and again.

    Great video! I am planning on hiking and camping part of the Superior Trail myself this summer. I'll have to remember to get the 2 1/2 serving lasagna!

    This looks like a great route. The SHT is deceivingly difficult at times. Went from cove point to tettegouche last year. Might tackle this one this year.

      Good luck! Where are you headed?

      Thinking Caribou Lake to Grand Marais. Or starting in Lutsen area to Grand Marias. We'll have part of a Tues to hike, then all day Wed and Thurs and ending Fri. Still working on a final itinerary. Having trouble figuring what is a realistic amount. I'm in it more for the scenery and camping, I don't want to race. Any favorite camping spots along that route let me know. Thanks!

      That sounds great! That’s actually the furthest north we’ve been so far. Let’s us know how it goes!
      What kind of mileage are you planning per day?

    • @tdulka
      @tdulka 6 лет назад +1

      OK, my tentative plan (hasn't been approved yet by my hiking buddy yet lol) is as follows: Day 1, approx 3 miles since we won't be getting a start until 3 p.m. or so. Day 2: 9.8 miles, Day 3: 8 miles, Day 4: 8.3 miles. I don't really like the last day being 8.3, but there isn't a closer campsite between Bally Creek Pond and Grand Marais, which is where we are leaving our car. I did a test run at Afton S.P. this past weekend with a 28LB pack....I still need to add clothes and food. I completed 8.3 miles in 4.5 hours. Since this is my first time hiking the SHT, I have no idea if this plan is too aggressive or if I'll be o.k. I guess I'll find out!

    • @BackpackerBrothers
      @BackpackerBrothers  6 лет назад

      If you did a solid test run at Afton, I’d guess you should be just fine. Eight to ten miles per day (assuming you did similar at Afton?) should be a solid amount for a first time tip. Don’t make our mistake and plan 17 miles for day 1 of your first ever trip (when it’s raining as well...) Yeah, that was fun.

    What app/software do you use for the video showing where you hiked (at 1:30)? Will it run with your phone on airplane mode? Does it use much battery?

    • @BackpackerBrothers
      @BackpackerBrothers  6 лет назад

      It’s actually a web app called Doarama. We record our tracks on our Garmin eTrex 20x dedicated gps and then upload the gpx file. Then, since the web app doesn’t support exporting, we use a screen capture to record the animation. Pretty nifty!

    Being so close to the SHT, do you guys plan on hiking the whole thing?

  • @henryreesor971

    Question for you guys... did you guys use an under quilt and if so what temp rating, as well as what rating sleeping bag did you guys use? I’m planning a similar trip in early-mid June, and I’ll be hammock camping, so what do you guys recommend? Love your videos! Thanks!

    • @BackpackerBrothers
      @BackpackerBrothers  4 года назад +1

      Joey has a 20 F under quilt and top quilt - check out Hammock Gear. Pete has a 20 F under quilt but uses his 29 F sleeping bag for a rope quilt. However for June on SHT you will not need that warmth level and will be too hot with it. Instead we really love the lightweight Aegismax bag for summer camping. Check out our video on that!

    Hey thinking about hiking this do you need to reserve camping spots or can you just camp anywhere on the trail?

    • @BackpackerBrothers
      @BackpackerBrothers  4 года назад +1

      SHT campsites are first come first serve, no reservations. The trail does go through a lot of state parks which sometimes have additional backpacking campsites, but those typically do require reservations.

    You guys ever get outta the slums and come to Michigan?

    • @BackpackerBrothers
      @BackpackerBrothers  6 лет назад +1

      Certainly wouldn’t call MN the slums, but we hope to do Isle Royal.

    • @GustoStCool
      @GustoStCool 6 лет назад +1

      LOL...Joke, man...joke. Isle Royal's awesome. Check out North or South Manitou Islands too. They're both less rustic, per se, than Isle Royal...But, they're perfect for weekend trips.

      Plus, there are a lot of hot hippie chicks on South Manitou.

    What a fun trip! Ah to be so young again that the miles fly by :) Did you use your backpacking on the cheap stuff on this trip?

    • @BackpackerBrothers
      @BackpackerBrothers  6 лет назад +1

      We both used our usual gear on this trip. It was a good opportunity to review each of our setups and see what changes we might look to make for the 2018 season. More to come on that... stay tuned!

    Just came off a three day hike on the SHT. Are Trekking poles a must?

    • @BackpackerBrothers
      @BackpackerBrothers  6 лет назад

      Great, how was it? We wouldn’t say they’re a must. We both find them nice to have and overall helpful in climbs and descents, and even on flat ground. Overall, it’s a personal preference.

    What program/app do you use to show your route on the 3D map?

    • @BackpackerBrothers
      @BackpackerBrothers  6 лет назад

      It’s a web app called Doarama. Very cool software. It doesn’t support video exporting (but may in the future) so you have to explore screen record options. We use Mac hardware/software for video and photo editing, and screen recording is really easy with QuickTime.
