I love this video. I was born there in 1943. I lived there from 43 to 53 on Fanmar Terrace. When my parents got a divorce my mom and I moved to Hawaii. When I was about 6 my dad, Morse Gibson, built me a double ended row boat which I used in the river all the time, and used it in one of those Begonia festivals. My dad also built a laundromat up the street from city hall. I came back from Hawaii for a semester and went to Santa Cruz High School. My mom and my sister graduated from there. I knew David and Judy McDonald. There were the Saba was used to be a roller skating rink. I love swimming in the river. I remember Herman the life guard. I loved Babe's Band Stand. I used to collect Coke bottles under the Edgewater and turn them in to the Black & White for pennies then I would buy a super delicious hamburger at Babes. So many memories. Thank you for the post.
Wow this is great! I’m blown away that the soquel creek was ever clean and deep enough to jump off a bridge into! Also that they used to pull the Begonia floats with a swimmer. I live here now and this is a nice little time capsule, thank you for posting.😊
I lived on Fanmar Terrace and visited that church when I was a kid in the 40s. The part I like about the church is I used to throw rocks at the big bell and make it ring.
Wow never saw the patio building ever , this video brought me to tears as I used to live in aptos , but had to move to Los Ángeles and it sucks , so polluted 😔 capitula was my favorite place in Santa Cruz , I’d go to pizza my heart , Thai basil or the Mexican restauran that occupies that building I thing it’s called something torito , it’s been so long I only remember torito. Shadow brook so many memories in that restaurant 😢 thanks for posting this video.
I miss that Capitola so very much. Whoever decided to make it a clone of Monterey was badly challenged. THOUSANDS of people that grew-up there were forced out because of short sight. Sure, it was great for the richest, but the soul of the village was the people.
The postmaster Harry Hooper he mentions was a Hall of Fame baseball player with the Boston Red Sox in his younger days and suggested Babe Ruth who was a teammate at the time (pre-Yankees) to management that he should not only be a pitcher but an everyday player because of his exceptional hitting ability.
My Dad grew up in Capitola in the summers. Their beach house is still there at 204 Monterey Ave. Loved that house. Good memories. Sadly, I have never been back since the last time I was there in 1986, the summer I turned 16.
The amphibious Jeep that he referred to as a DUKW, (pronounced like duck) was actually called a SEEP. A Sea going Jeep. A DUKW was a much larger amphibious vehicle built on a 3 axle GMC two and a half ton (duece and a half) chassis. I read about them in an article hanging on the Shadowbrook picture wall and always wanted to seem them driving around Capitola on video. Now I finally got to see that... really cool.
I remember the carousel as a kid. There was a arcade/ski ball on the Esplanade that we would hang out at as kids in the 70s. Tola was amazing during the 70s/80s. Now its gentrified and full of hipster douchebags, tech asshats, and a handful of grandfathered old folks. In my mind, the beginning of the end was Oct 17, 1989. I left in 91 and didnt come back till 2015. We sold our condo in the jewelry box for 135k which at the time we thought was pretty good since we only paid 30k for it in 77. Now its worth half a mill 😆 Anyways, Tola is completely different from the town I grew up in. With the exception of some faithful historic buildings, the place is nothing like it was. Ya cant go back, and that is a real shame. Wish I could go back to the 40s/50s and visit both Tola and Santa Cruz, especially the SC Muni Wharf. I would love to eat at Stagnaros or Gildas or Castagnolas or Adolfs just one time. Gettin melancholy now, shit.
there is a meme floating around. " In the 80s, we were looking at the future, in 2020s we are looking at 1980s and wishing it to be back. " I feel that
I agree that in the 60's, 70's the carousel was cool, the Bandstand 2 skee bowl arcades with pinballs and pokerino, loved the boat load of french fries for .25 cents...the bowling alley where at times it was 4 games for a dollar....the Capitola Theatre...so many movies seen there...Spartacus, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, etc.....good times and yes the river was over 6 feet deep at one time....we would get into the river just by the train tressel (about 5 feet deep) and when we got to under the bridge it was always over my head....
Cool video. 60 years ago in Jan 1964, my wife and I spent our honeymoon in Capitola CA. I think it rained every day.

Funville...I can still smell the place.
My dad and his brother used to boat the river.

Nice memories. I learned to swim from lessons at the boat rentals and spent hours in a rowboat in the river.
Our play ground growing up in SJ and MH
Lots of friends moved there
Also worked there
When did the Palms restaurant change to the Mexican restaurant?
I'm not sure how long ago, but my friends and I used to eat at El Toro Bravo back in the mid 80's....
Tom Clark The Mexican restaurant opened in 1967. I was just wondering when the Palms closed.
1967
@@59reyder so it switched rite over from the Palms to El Toro Bravo?
The Palms was across the street from the Hamburger place which became the El Toro Bravo
Hmmm, Dont they have this in 4k? lol
Very nice video. The ‘50s weren’t completely ideal but pretty good after the mess in Korea was over…over there.
Jumping off the bridge...they'd call Homeland Security on you for doing that these days.
not worth watching
