I live in the "GCC" - Kuwait in particular. This exact truck is still in production and you can buy a 2024 model right off toyota right now,. Newer editions do come with some modern-day upgrades and packages such as, "New headunit with AndroidAuto/CarPlay, LED headlights, Automatic transmission, Snorkel, (ABS/EBD/BA/VSC/TRC/HAC, Lane Assist, Cruise Control)"
Fun fact: this truck is known as "شاص - /Shas/" in the Middle East which means a literal "Chassis"

They are indestructible. In New Zealand while mucking around in a river a 70 series got stuck on a large rock and all 4 wheels were not touch the river bed. After a couple of hours it was left. It was sitting in the middle of the river for several weeks. It was checked to make it was still in place. On one check only the top part of the cabin was visible with the river running through it. When finally pulled out it fired in to life while being towed. The seats and seat belts were replace and the wiring was ok.

To be fair fresh water and salt water makes a big difference. I love Toyota, but I'm sure many other cars would have done the same. Years ago at a shop I worked at, one of the customers had bought a "cheap" flood truck (Ram) that had been exposed to salt water. As far as I know it was never fixed because the damage to wiring was so extensive.

I absolutely love these things, they are unkillable. The moment I saw the front end, I noticed the Saudi national emblem on the grille. Depending on what country you're in, they all had local names for it; in Saudi they were called the "Shaas" from the word for chassis. In Kuwait, they were called "Abu Shanab", with Shanab being Arabic for mustache, because the early variants had a front bumper that supposedly resembled one. Good times, great trucks. For the first time ever, the newest generation is offered with an automatic transmission, which deviates from it's long standing tradition of having a stick shift only. Thank you for putting this video together!

G’da from Oz... I have a 2002 HDJ79R cab chassis/single cab ute with the 4.2litre HD-FTE turbo diesel motor I have had it since new and it has a “meagre” 320,000 klms (200,000 US miles) on the clock. It has travelled nearly all of Australia’s outback tracks with more trips in the planning stage.... bloody great vehicle 👍

Most of them are this color or white, double cabin, and have a wooden truck bed. The hard top 2024(4461 V8 32V Diesel) model is worth $81k as of today.

I wish they would make these for us in the states again..We had pickups like this back in the 70's and 80's to haul campers, firewood, 4 wheelers, elk and deer during hunting season in Montana.. The old 4X4 chevy's were bullet proof that we used to haul fuel and tools to our logging jobs in the mountains of western Montana..We have lost utilitarian for style unfortunately..Simple, easy to fix and practical..

I’ve spent a lot of time in Saudi, Kuwait, and Iraq during my Air Force days and was surprised that every truck seemed to be a tan or white Toyota!! In Saudi, the RSAF gave us coupons to fill up our military trucks (Ford and Chevy) and gas in Riyadh came out about a dime a gallon!!!

Magnificent Land Cruiser!! The quintessence of TOYOTA quality and reliability, found all over the world.
The kind of vehicle which, in 1978, made me passionate about 4x4 vehicles. What a shame that with the ultra-restrictive standards that we have here in France, it is no longer possible to have these Land-Cruisers (especially sold in diesel, here). The examples - FJ, BJ, which have been preserved or even restored now have a very high value on the market of fans of these vehicles.

We’ve been taking it 4wd drive trails in West Virginia and so far it’s handled everything really well. My plan is to take it out west for a 2-3 month adventure in a few years and I’m trying to learn everything I can about them beforehand.

I worked for a company that built 79 and 76's into armored vehicles for the military and special forces. They were very basic but built like a land cruiser. They were tough as nails and would never break down. The only downside is they had no power, but they would crawl up a mountain with ease.

Nostalgic. My father is from Trinidad and had a 85' Toyota SR5 DOWNEY edition. Lifted. Roll bar. KC lights. Warn winch. Steel brush guard. Had it shipped to Florida when he immigrated to US. Then shipped to Germany where he was stationed in Army. Then had it shipped back to US. Grew up with that truck. Learned how to drive manual in it. The dash, AC, clock, door panels and handles, corner windows, sliding back window, tailgate and so on are all exactly the same as this LC. The engine gave out in my early teens and it just sat and rotted in the yard for years. He had promised I could have it eventually but he wound up selling it to someone who knocked on his door offering to buy it. Shame he let it go (for next to nothing I might add) considering how awesome it was and how sought after they are now. Would have loved restoring the thing.

Does this bring back memories from my decades in KSA and Kuwait. These are seen daily in the desert, the military uses them.
Recently here in Spain I witnessed a large car hauler will 10 of those on board. Yes all the same tan color. I still remember Abdullah with his brother and son in the cab and wives riding in the bed. This was common place in Kuwait and KSA.

I'm South African, and these were, and still are, the farmer's best tool. Even the latest version of these are still very basic. Only difference is ours are almost exclusively diesel powered. There is a gas powered V6 model, but it is extremely heavy on fuel. You still see these vehicles on the road every day and are extremely popular with the off-road crowd. They're just as popular in Australia.
I ❤ them because they're basically almost unbreakable. In the Middle East, they're used for warfare and troop transport through inhospitable deserts. Those boys even mount cannons on them😅
Thanks for showing us, and I definitely share your enthusiasm with it😁👍🏻🙋🏼‍♂️👍🏻👍🏻
