The odd thing is she almost always was cast as the plain girl second or third banana who was kind of man crazy. Don't know why they never considered her to be the lead in a film. She was photogenic and could act besides being a wonderful singer. Her eyes were like magnets.
I sat down with Virginia at a memorial for actor Henry Brandon.( Silas Barnaby in the Laurel & Hardy movie Babes in Toyland). We had drinks with my friend Bill. I really did not know who she was. But she was so funny and nice. And she asked us to come visit her. She was the mayor or had just finished her run as mayor. Since then I have discovered her movies and love her performing those songs and one liners. Wish I had known who she was at the time I was having that conversation with her.
I am grateful that Skip was able to do these interviews for posterity's sake, but he was certainly annoying since he interrupted so much. Discussing The Harvey Girls, he was trying to recall Angela Lansbury who played Em. Also, the name of the song Judy, Virginia, and Cyd's voice double sang was called "It's a Great Big World" not "It's a Cold, Cold World." Now I love Judy Garland, but the interview is about Virginia. He should have stuck to Virginia's career. True, Judy and Virginia worked in the films Thousands Cheer and Till the Clouds Roll By, but they didn't work together really until The Harvey Girls. Interesting interview. It was nice to be able to hear about her life from her own words. For an interesting biography, read Virginia O'Brien MGM's Deadpan Diva: The Authorized Biography by Robert Strom (published in 2018).
this interviewer is a perfect example of the media industry that does NOT always hire the best talent for the job. Its a wonder how this interviewer worked beyond this segment. This is so bad, I cannot finish.... I feel sorry for Virginia here
The person conducting this interview is HEINOUS. He doesn't give her enough time to answer questions. She must've been completely exasperated by the time it was over.
Agree one hundred percent! Lowe is an obnoxious little slug, and a HORRIBLE interviewer. I had the misfortune of meeting the little toad in the late'80s when I worked at a shop in West Hollywood. Part of my job was to ask EVERYONE carrying a bag to please check it in, as there was so much shop lifting. When this jerk strolled in, I politely explained our policy and asked him to check in his bag. He went ballistic and refused, stating he was highly offended.
Yeah, Would see him at theatre openings in the 80s. He was a real freeloader and nobody wanted to sit next to him because he would talk so loud during performances.

Did Virginia live in the Hollywood Home at this time? She mentions seeing Jimmy Stewart, Virginia Mayo, etc. there the 'other day'. Maybe visiting? Love hearing her snippets of song!
Always loved her, so unique & edible, saw her rock-a-bye baby when I was small & would have killed to see again, skip forty years later & I’m watching the big store, I remember freaking out I found it I found it! 😂
Virginia was pregnant during "The Harvey Girls" and Judy caused so many delays that Virginia kept getting bigger and bigger and her part got smaller and smaller. That's why her character seems to disappear about half-way through. But she loved Judy as a person.
Skip was aware that Martin Short had based the Jiminy Glick character on him, and Short actually admitted it. At first Skip E was angry, but it became so popular that he embraced it and began to brag about it.
Virginia O'Brien was wonderful. Very beautiful. A unique and special talent. Here, she seems lovely and down to earth. Too bad she was interviewed by a self-promoting idiot.
I'm not familiar with the guy interviewing her but he seems absolutely clueless. Doesn't even know the difference between The Harvey Girls and Meet Me In St. Louis. He kept interrupting her with incorrect information.
Virginia Gumm probably was the Harvey Girl actress they were trying to come up with. Judy Garland's sister. Although there was also Virginia Davis playing another Harvey Girl.
I can't watch this whole thing because Jiminy Glick is so bad. But I wonder, has anyone asked Virginia about her musical influences? She had such a unique jazzy/bluesy vocal style. If she'd wanted just to be a jazz singer/big band canary, she would have been great.
The funny thing is Judy Garland had a natural high, while many others needed stimulants. The pills they gave her so as to work her like a dog actually diminished her sexual energy. But you get the idea when you see her in film.
So many interviewers have that same failing - Chris Matthews; Bill O'Reilly are two. They ask a question then step all over the response. It is SO annoying.
Inexplicably, she was so underated. Not only was she gorgeous, and I mean Gorgeous on capital letters, but weirdly funny. Pretty ahead of her time
The odd thing is she almost always was cast as the plain girl second or third banana who was kind of man crazy. Don't know why they never considered her to be the lead in a film. She was photogenic and could act besides being a wonderful singer. Her eyes were like magnets.
I'm glad there are others that appreciate Virginia, she was a gem
Oh do shut up and let here finish a sentence for goodness sake!
If you are reading this, then you know about Virginia O'Brien and are a person of culture. You rock🤘, have an amazing day👍
WOW! I've been a Virginia O'Brien fan for years...this is an absolute treat! Thank you!
I'm such a fan of Virginia and yet I've never seen an interview with her! Thank you very much!
LOVE THIS LADY!!!! WHAT REMARKABLE TALENT!!!!

I always thought she would have made a perfect Annie Oakley in "Annie Get Your Gun". I always wondered why MGM passed her over for that role.
Skip E. Lowe is a terrible interviewer! He barely lets her get a word in.
THEEE worst. I mean the patience his subjects have though....
He's remarkably like Jiminy Glick, and I wonder if Martin Short didn't base the Glick character on this guy.
Andrew Gilmore :This guy....SUCKS!
@@bobtaylor170 YES HE DID.
Too aggressive. Like a fucking interrogator. Every question comes off as an accusation.

Thanks for posting -- I've seen 2 minutes of this video, and was getting ready to make this comment (about Skip).
What a beautiful, classy lady. Love her...x

I can't help but wonder if he was the inspiration for Martin Short's Jiminy Glick!
@@LaCroixCreative I had that same thought. Maybe some Donohue in there too.
I wish he would let her tell her story. This is not supposed to be about him.
The person conducting this interview is HEINOUS. He doesn't give her enough time to answer questions. She must've been completely exasperated by the time it was over.
This is the guy that Martin Short imitated in his Jiminy Glick interviews!
he's so annoying, constantly interrupting. What a pity given how interesting his guests are. Driving me mad!

No one else was interested in interviewing these long ago forgotten stars.
I admit, once I got used to Mr Lowe I've enjoyed his interviews a great deal more.
they don’t make them like these true stars anymore!!!
Still Beautiful

always Loved Virginia O'Brien
I love her!
Is there were Martin Short got the idea for Jiminy Glick??
I just left the same comment! It's hilarious, isn't it?
Exactly
i felt like JG was based on someone but now i see who
Come on Skip a break.... rip....these are still fascinating interviews for true Old Hollywood fans.😂👌😂

"Uh huh."

Oh my gosh...it IS Jimmy Glick. Douglas called that...

how did she manage to get through without throtling him?
Love her
What a classy dame.
I became a fan of Virginia back in 2005 when I saw ‘Thousands Cheer’’ on TV. She captivated me with her dead pan delivery and beauty.
Wow! Martin Short must have found his Jiminy Glick while watching this.
😭😭😭😭my memories😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Too bad DipSkip can't just let her talk,it would be soo much better.Love Virginia,a great talent!

This is great! I miss Public Access.
The mention of riots....perhaps related to that year’s riots in Los Angeles following the King verdict.
He asked Virginia about Judy Garland about taking pills!!!
The actress that he and she couldn't remember in "The Harvey Girls" was Angela Lansbury. John Hodiak was also in it.
No he was thinking of Virginia Rees who did the singing voice for Angela Lansbury
Virginia Gumm probably was the Harvey Girl actress they were trying to come up with. Judy Garland's sister. Although there was also Virginia Davis playing another Harvey Girl.
Skippy the interviewer seems like the prototype of Jiminy Glick, except for real. Wow!
LOL! I just said the same thing (without seeing your comment first)!

@@Runawayslave2023 He was the inspiration for Glick. SCTV ! 🇨🇦
Why does keep interrupting his guests ? Never lets them finish a line!
Leave it to an ass to screw up an interview with a great lady. RIP Virginia; I had a crush on you when I was young.
He must be the basis for Jiminy Glick!
Virginia was certainly a rare talent. Skip Lowe is Jimminy Glick meets Merv Griffin.
He looks like that little man on Will and Grace
Beverly Leslie
Jiminy Glick!
I do not like neg comments..but that guy is terrible!!
This is how Martin Short stole his Jimminy Glick character..... Im certain.
Is that Jiminy Glick interviewing?
The funny thing is Judy Garland had a natural high, while many others needed stimulants. The pills they gave her so as to work her like a dog actually diminished her sexual energy. But you get the idea when you see her in film.
This interviewer interrupting, changing topics in the middle of answers, talking in third person, ...omg!
This interviewer is giving me major Jimminy Glick vibes
Oh My God, he was terrible.
Talk about stepping on the other guy's lines...
I WISH they had skipped Slip the interviewer😕😒
He’s Beverly Leslie 2.0
The guy reminds me of Jiminy Glick
dang, jimmy glick
Jimimy Glick in larval form
What an awful interviewer - so in love with his own voice!!
