@@simpsimpson5175 - Thanks for the tip. At what point - of ever - does it stop being heresy to say that people can eventually become even greater than the previous legends even as it's always acknowledged that they stand on the shoulders of those that came before?
Hendrix - 3 studio albumsover 2 years, 3 live albums all released on '70. Untimely death but the catalog is what it is.
Mayer - 8 studio albmis (and counting over a 20 year period, 7 live albums (and counting) released over a 5 year period in his mid-early career
Which doesn't mention his work with Dead & Co.
But it's not just about quantity - I get that completely. It's also about breadth of work. Not everyone liked Room for Squares. Or Sob Rock for that point. But as bookends of the career right now, if you take into account what's in the middle - from the Trio, so Born and Raised, and you honestly look at (OK listen to) the sheer variety of the music Mayer has explored, at this point I think it's hard to really say that he doesn't deserve to be listened to.
But it's also not just about breadth, and this is where it's all subjective. I find his playing more nuanced and interesting than either Hendrix or SRV (gasp, I know). His studio albums are - for me - the runways from which to get comfortable, before accessing his live work, which takes me away and has reduced me to tears on many more occassions than I can count.
For me, he is the single most important guitar player of all tme - for me and how I listen. I think maybe Knoplfler would be second if I tried to make a list because - again for me - at the end of the day it's about the impact the music has on me. It seems silly to try to pick who's a "better" guitar player from any type of technical perspective; they're all the best after a certain point aren't they?
I think it's about what the music does, and means to the listener. So Simp, thanks for the suggestion, I had actually listened to Mr Hendrix before, and I'm willing to say if not for him, maybe Mayer isn't what he is today. Maybe absent the inspiration from hearing Hendrix, Mayer is a lawyer, or a plumber. I have no idea. But the argument that what comes after can never surpass what came before flies in the face of human achievement and progress, and for me it's not convincing.
Peace from NYC and take care.

Classics no doubt, but that's like comparing the horsepower of a Ferrari (PRS) to the horsepower of a 50 year old horse (that'd be the Fender). It has a much broader range and usefulness. Which suits him better than being pigeonholed into one sound.
