This was one of my all time favorite scenes, and even as a kid when I especially loved this submarine I was saddened to see it get destroyed. Now we’re left wondering why no one would bother making a real life version of this, let alone why we don’t use these anymore, not in a grand scale.
One: having windows of any kind on a submarine is basically impossible especially ones that go down to really deep depths. Two: there's just not enough to explore down in the ocean to warrant big commercial submarines. All we use are military submarines or small submersibles attached to larger ships. It's just more cost efficientm
@@HelghastStalker nor the need. The deepest diving nuclear subs were made by the Soviets, stuff like the Alfa class. And even then it was more so for a flex or for strategic purposes

You're probably not gonna believe this, but I actually have a dream about this submarine being a real life U.S. Navy warship. The ship, the subpods, the aqua evacs. + A few modifications. Like a few missile silos. Your could say it's a guided missile submarine.
Knowing also that they built a real life miniature of the sub for reference further adds to the coolness of the scene in my opinion. And actually, that also now explains why the descent scene is done in such a way that a live action miniature shot would be done. Maybe even having a miniature is what gave them the idea to do it like that.
It's crazy to think how small those people are compared to the Ulysses. But then when you see the size difference from the sub to the Leviathan. It's terrifying.
looking back at this now I like how Vinny's expression when meeting Milo for the first time goes consecutively from contempt, to subtle irritation, to semi-sarcastic enthusiasm until finally parting with what might be a joke. at first he's not happy that there's a 'lost greenhorn' heading into the sub. He's further annoyed at Milo's reaction to picking up one of his dynamite sticks like he thinks he's about to get judged for it, but it slowly changes to enthusiasm when Milo, rather than staying scared just politely asks what else Vinny's carrying. Vinny found his boom after all, it's what he do for this film and he can appreciate someone being more curious than scared.
Fun Fact: Michael J Fox actually improvised the line about the carrots after Milo pukes, due to actually being allergic to carrots himself! Mind. Blown.
Seeing this in theater was one of my best childhood memories. Sadly there only about 10 people in the room with me and my dad. Such a shame that this was killed by critics for not being a "traditional" Disney movie. This movie had so much potential, they were even making a TV series about discovering how much Atlantis influenced the world after it vanished. The episodes that were complete were combined together into a sequel movie to make some quick cash.
they didn't need to make that bridge bubble transparent, letting us see Milo and all the rest of the crew working and walking around inside. but they did. and i love them for it.
I don't know if anyone has ever heard of Barotrauma, but I just got into it with my friends recently and immediately thought about recreating the Ulysses in it, because BT has a sub editor where you can design and wire up your own custom submarines. I've spent more of my playtime in the editor than actually playing the game lol. It also has steam workshop support so people can share their sub designs. Someone has already made their own version of the ulysses, and it looks great, they did a good job with the command sphere in the front, and it even has a smaller shuttle like one of the mini-subs that can dock with it. This workshop design is great, but has a few flaws. I want to make my own version! Also the game has a fairly complex electrical system, and has basic components for learning simple logic gates. It's very fun.
Most of my game time has been with the bois in that Ulysses from the workshop. It's not perfect but it's been pretty solid. I'd like to get into making designs in it (as with several games), but I just don't have the time or energy to invest. I've instead been making a fairly detailed model of the Ulysses to print and hand finish into a half meter long desk model with lighting.

@@HelghastStalker Soviet and then Russian military R&D has always been capable of pulling off crazy shit even on tight budgets and with technological constraints. It's just a shame that their military is corrupt from top to bottom as Ukraine has shown and all the funding that goes into it ends up dissapearing into some general's pocket
You're probably not gonna believe this, but I actually have a dream about this submarine being a real life U.S. Navy warship. The ship, the subpods, the aqua evacs. + A few modifications. Like a few missile silos. Your could say it's a guided missile submarine.
@@HelghastStalker a fairly good point, sir. But it's still a dream. It's one of my favorite Disney vehicles ever.
"Beans, bacon, whiskey and lard". I think this is my dad's favorite quote from an animated film.
Well, it is a "Leviathan". Anything with the words Leviathan or Behemoth in it's name is gonna be pretty damn big.
_To whoever took the L from the motorpool sign, haha we are all very amused_
looking back at this now I like how Vinny's expression when meeting Milo for the first time goes consecutively from contempt, to subtle irritation, to semi-sarcastic enthusiasm until finally parting with what might be a joke.
at first he's not happy that there's a 'lost greenhorn' heading into the sub.
1:06 Vinny at his sassiest.🤭
2:07 Milo being my sister going off to basic training.
Also, this soundtrack should've gotten an award.
Fun Fact: Michael J Fox actually improvised the line about the carrots after Milo pukes, due to actually being allergic to carrots himself! Mind. Blown.
it's a bit of a reoccurring joke

"Looks like all our chances for survival rest with you, Mr. Thatch. You and that little book.”
I miss old Walt Disney Pictures
Seeing this in theater was one of my best childhood memories. Sadly there only about 10 people in the room with me and my dad. Such a shame that this was killed by critics for not being a "traditional" Disney movie. This movie had so much potential, they were even making a TV series about discovering how much Atlantis influenced the world after it vanished. The episodes that were complete were combined together into a sequel movie to make some quick cash.
"To whoever took the 'L' from the 'motor pool' sign haha, we are all very amused." 'm dead 😂🤣💀
2:26-2:28 😎 submarine 2:31-2:42, 2:46-2:51 that’s my favorite music 🎶 from Atlantis: the lost empire.
they didn't need to make that bridge bubble transparent, letting us see Milo and all the rest of the crew working and walking around inside. but they did. and i love them for it.
Truly underrated this movie
Do tell when completed.
I love this 2d/3d mix aesthetic. Shame we don't see it much anymore.
2:30 CHILLS! Anyone else?
Brainpop14 I remember seeing it in theaters a few years ago.
My GOOSEBUMPS had goosebumps.

@@TYPE_Xenofanatic5767 it'll be more chilling when they remake that scene in the reboot version
I really wish this sub had more screen time, on the VHS box it took up half the cover.

It's crazy how Atlantis is such a great movie for all ages. It's even crazier that as a kid you don't realize just how many people end up dying in it.

Michael J Fox who was the voice of Chance the American Bulldog in "Homeward Bound", Stuart Little and Milo Thatch in "Atlantis the Lost Empire".
I love that Mr Whitemore hears the car honking and goes "The fuck?" and turns around xD

I never noticed Mr. Witmoore crossing his fingers behind his back when the sub is being launched.
Rourke:"See you got that journal. Nice pictures....
Milo: *nods* 😁
Rourke:"...but, I prefer good Western myself!"
Milo:😠 *in mind* "What the hell did you just say???"

I think next to the "enriching" line, that is a subtle hint to Rourke's true character as he cares nothing about the Atlantean culture.
