Exactly my thought! Bill also doesn't say which direction to fold the first half before tucking the second. But I got it after a couple tries (once I figured out the first fold.) But this video was much better than the last one a watched.
I've been watching several vids on how to tie a bow tie and this was by far the most informative and the only one that has resulted in me successfully tying a bow tie for the first time! Thanks Bill
Here's one key detail that took me a long time to figure out, that not a single video or tutorial I've found yet (including this one) has mentioned: At first I assumed that the looped parts are what should form the bow, and be forward on both sides, with the tails (free ends) behind. After a bunch of tries this seemed impossible, because it basically is- I kept trying to twist the around and it's impossible to have the loops face forward on both sides without the whole thing looking extremely twisted. Good news is, it's not necessary, or even supposed to be that way! Bottom line, on one side (the first half you tie) there will be a loop forward with a tail in back, and on the other side (the second side you tie), the tail of the first one is what forms the bow, and the loop hides behind that. You just need to make sure the length is such that that loop on the second half is fully covered by the tail, and vice versa, and of course that both sides are even. This is so basic, maybe it's obvious to other people, but it wasn't to me. You can see it clearly in this video, but it wasn't as clear in other videos. I hope this is helpful to someone else who may be wondering the same thing.
For those seeing this and still having trouble (maybe left-handed folks like myself?), make sure on the tough step that you end up with a folded bow on each side, determined by which way through the loop you go.
Great video. The important additional detail to note is that the middle part is wrinkled and he doesn't care. Trying to get that sucka to unwrinkle is not worth a man's valuable tie and it doesn't change how good you look. Thanks, Bill Nye!
Thank you to the dad I never had to teach me about all the wonderful things of the world no matter how simple or complex your love is much appreciated bill
Me watching this video at 4 am stressed because I know I'm getting a bow tie for my birthday tomorrow (don't ask) and I'll be expected to tie it myself.
Sorry for commenting on a 5 year old comment. I learned to tie a bowtie back in 2015 and I called myself an idiot a lot. So if an idiot like me can do it, than you can too.
I don't understand what the point was in having so many cuts in the video. Could it not be a single shot from a single distance to learn the art from the master?
Learned it as a boy and it's no difference, really, from tying one's shoelaces. When there was a ball at my boarding school, I had a queue outside my room, to tie boys' bowties for them, even my housemaster's. Everywhere now, alas, pre-tied bowties on the rise. Imagine wearing a pretied regular necktie.
I love Bill Nye, but this video is not helpful. It is surprisingly hard to find a helpful video on tying a bowtie. I finally did get it, thanks to the guys from Columbus at Pursuit.
Oh Bill- -you went from meaningful "scientist" to Obama shill-- and now regulated to RUclips for bow tie instructional. How far you've fallen. Better luck in the future, Bill.
Hands completely blocked the most important part of the whole process. Great work, camera man!
Exactly my thought!

It was shot badly, it's a fact!
Hardly the cameraman's fault, hands aren't see-through.
Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! I've watched so many videos on this and only you could help me get over the mountain! You've always been my hero!
I've been watching several vids on how to tie a bow tie and this was by far the most informative and the only one that has resulted in me successfully tying a bow tie for the first time! Thanks Bill
I just saw this video right now and that’s exactly what I told myself
Bill Nye teaching us the world's most toughest aspects. Science, and how to tie bow ties.
Anyone else notice that two different bow ties are being used?
+Jeff Hunt OMG! I did not.
Jeff Hunt it was really throwing me for a loop. Look birds. Now Dots. What is this madness?
omg 😵
Wonder why that was so
Oh my God I just noticed.
Bill Nye, muchas gracias, just going to start using Bow ties, and learning from you how to tie it, makes me cry. Gracias.
I have seen like ten videos on tying a bow tie and somehow this one is the best!
0:39 completely covers the challenging bit with his whole hand.
Bill Nye. a nerd who truly has class and he's smart... I watched him as a child and now I truly admire hin
he was a bully and snob during schooltime...just a sociopath who immitates some nerd attributes for fiscal reasons.
Also he's using two bowties.

True, nobody ever said this in any other video. Weird. It’s kind of key…I didn’t know this till I got it right.
For those seeing this and still having trouble (maybe left-handed folks like myself?), make sure on the tough step that you end up with a folded bow on each side, determined by which way through the loop you go.
Found this when I really needed it!!!! Thanks Bill, always loved what you do!!!!
THANK YOU, now i can wear a bow tie to my wedding
Bill Nye you are "The Man"! Thanks for the tutorial! You are awesome.
Bill, you still teach me things. Thank you.
Bill Nye, The Bow Tie Guy. Thanks Nye, Can't wait to wear bow ties!
Do you care to share with us which one you're going to use? The first one you tried with or the second one?
God, I feel sad seeing him that old.
He looks great.
hackerism1 he looks like he was always ment 2 be an older guy he pulls it of
Great video. The important additional detail to note is that the middle part is wrinkled and he doesn't care. Trying to get that sucka to unwrinkle is not worth a man's valuable tie and it doesn't change how good you look. Thanks, Bill Nye!
I think a wrinkled or off-kilter bow tie proves you had the temerity to actually tie the bow tie, rather than a pre-made one.
Bill Nye is amazingly great
Thank you to the dad I never had to teach me about all the wonderful things of the world no matter how simple or complex your love is much appreciated bill
Me watching this video at 4 am stressed because I know I'm getting a bow tie for my birthday tomorrow (don't ask) and I'll be expected to tie it myself.
How did it go? Did you make a complete ass of yourself?
@@Larsholden702 of course not if its bill Nye explaining it then you just instantly know
JESUS CHRIST BILL NYE SLOW DOWN
nothing's better than this video
It feels like rocket science, thanks Bill NYE
He is a liar. Definitely rocket science.
Sorry for commenting on a 5 year old comment. I learned to tie a bowtie back in 2015 and I called myself an idiot a lot. So if an idiot like me can do it, than you can too.
My boy Bill also wears bow ties! Yes
Very helpful. First real bow tie in 70+ years. It's easy.
That's how you tie a real self tie bowtie!
I use to have the best naps during his videos in science class 🙋♂️
Every other fucking video i never understood how to fucking do it. Cause they made it complicated. Bill made it so much easier for me...woke!!
Nicely done
Good thing it’s not rocket science, because he’s an engineer.
he cant help but explain like a scientist
Why are we seeing two different ties in this video?
Anonymous narrator voice: "uh-huh"
Simple and elegant explanation of the process.
Unlike talking science with a creationist.
I don't understand what the point was in having so many cuts in the video. Could it not be a single shot from a single distance to learn the art from the master?
Astonishing
As the doctor says: bowties are cool
Wtf? every time the camera zooms in the tie changes. Why?
Warp Stabilizer should be at 15%.
Bill Nye must have been a Boatswain's Mate.
Bill Nye🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
THANK YOU BILL NIE!!!
YOU SAVED MY FRIEND'S BIRTHDAY GIFTS
It’s not rocket science, but it is a science. Check out my most recent video for a bit of bow tie inspiration.
bill nye the sceince tie
Anyone see him flip us off?
need more detail

What if the bow tie identifies as a Windsor knot? Is it still ethical to wear and refer to ‘it’ as a bow tie? #TiesAreOnASpectrum
This is probably the most useful tutorial I've seen for some reason.
Love you Bill, but that was way too fast for us novices
Maybe speed it up even quicker 😞
Because all the cool people where bow ties
1. Tie the tie.
2. Raise Hell about global warming.
It’s interesting how he alternates bow ties in the demonstration
It’s as if they were created out of nothing
he's not even using the same bow tie
OMG did Bill Nye just give us all the bird ever so subtly?
I love Bill Nye, but this video is not helpful. It is surprisingly hard to find a helpful video on tying a bowtie. I finally did get it, thanks to the guys from Columbus at Pursuit.
Also not good to me. This video is way shorter, and way better.
ruclips.net/video/5X4aBSRt_HQ/видео.html
Absolutely no chance I’m following that, way too fast.
And Ps two different bow tiws
BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY
BILL! BILL!BILL! BILL!
BILL NYE THE SCIENCE
He left out one of the most important part - shaping one end in the shape of a bow tie. Duh!!
AH SO CHEAP , WE IN INDIA PREFER GOLD CHAIN .
Thanks Bill easy as that... 😑
I love you so much Bill Nye. Watched so many other videos and they all suck
Yeah I'm already completely lost - a POV video would be much more useful because then you don't have to mentally convert the perspective.
He’s FAR more qualified to teach bow tie knottery than rocket science...
Honestly, this is one of the more poorly explained tutorials.
poor angles - sorry, fail
absolute least helpful guide
He wouldn't know anything about rocket science because he's not not a scientist.
He is however a mechanical engineer, and worked on the boing 747😉
Terrible teacher!
Completely useless
Oh Bill- -you went from meaningful "scientist" to Obama shill-- and now regulated to RUclips for bow tie instructional. How far you've fallen. Better luck in the future, Bill.
Why are you conservative types so nasty to people?
Why are you astronaut cat-types always assuming those who disagree with you must be the opposite political persuasion?
Why do you not know difference in relegated and regulate. You should keep watching him...👍
because you spoke of Obama in a considerably negative light. sounds pretty conservative in my opinion.
@@cherihibbs8368 Because he's a Trump-voting idiot, that's why.
Thanks for nothing old man.
Shut up
