A major reason for its quietness is the fact the front fan--because of its size and the use of a special gearbox--turns at a much slower speed than most high-bypass engines. As such, the tips of the front fan blades spin below the speed of sound, so you don't get the "buzzsaw" sound effect you hear from many high-bypass engines.
The fan blades still exceed Mach 1, but not by as much as most engines. The gear might slow the fan a bit, but the primary purpose is to speed the N1 up and make it smaller.
Phantim3dx Not a pilot or engineer, just an aviation fan like yourself I am! A very good observation is made by some of you, I also noticed it on the B777, specially with GE power plants. I think, it's because these engines are quite larger than others, the center of gravity of the single engine dictates a more forward mounting on the wings! The second thing you noticed, was that how quite those new engines were on the A320neo, and yes I do agree and did notice that just like the RollsRoyce engines on the A380's. I also think, it is because of the larger diameter leading to a higher bypass ratio. Additionally I think RR, and CFM, design of the outer cowling is far more advanced than GE's. The reason why GE's powering the 747-8, 787s, and 777x has that "waved" outline cut of the back of the cowling, to disperse the high speed jet of air and reduce noise! Please, do reply to me and correct me, where necessary. As I said I'm an aviation fan learning by observation, curiosity, and a bit of reading! Thank you.
Really smooth and quiet - I can't wait to fly on one of these! Apart from the lack of engine noise, another thing I noticed was the lack of PTU sound after start up, unless I missed it?
I once traveled on an Alaska Airline A321neo which used the CFM LEAP. The start up was incredibly loud with the same "Moo" heard on 77Ws. The takeoff and cruise was very quite though.
Make sure you do a FOD pick up on the entire taxiway prior to departure; it is true the engines are about 1.3 feet above the ground. Spirit has them here at KLAS more frequently now.
recently i went on vacations to Cancun, and my flight to go was on a A320ceo, it is the first time i travel on a plane, and it was quieter than i expected, when i came back from the trip, it was a A320neo, and i thought it was going to be louder since the engines where significantly bigger, but it was soooo quiet, amazing
yes the engneering of the noise controlling got so much better if you compare it to older aircrafts. Which of the A320ceo andA320neo was your favorit ?
Der seidenweiche Lauf dieser Triebwerke und das ohne jegliches plattern überzeugen jeden Fluggast. Mit so einer angenehmen Akustik ist der A320neo wohl das beste Flugzeug in dieser Klasse.
I flew on a Lufthansa A320 twice in one day - officially via my connection in Germany. However after a trek through the airport and security I got back into the same aircraft with the same can crew - I was even I the same seat (the same or one row forward from where this video was filmed). Definately, the engines are very much quieter, however, the lack of engine noise does make you notice all the rattles and creaks in the cabin!
Nice video! The new A320NEO's are by far the quietest single aisle planes. When the the pilots increased power for takeoff I thought it was just spooling up and I was expecting to hear more noise, but then all of a sudden there was nothing. It is impressively quiet!
This Pratt and Whittney is SO quiet! I say this is a huge success for Pratt and Whittney because on Boeing 737-200s, P&W made one of the noisest engines. I have to say the Airbus A320 (and A321) are (or should be) considered to be the neo whisper jet!
I'm a true airbus fan love the quiteness of the a320 neo but a bit worried how the engines mounted extra forward cold you please do a vedio on how the engines mounted
Thanks for sharing... top quality, as usual. Seemed like a counterproductive pushback. At least they had time to complete the Before Takeoff checklist prior to taxiing ;-)
Majestic Roars Not so much Airbus,Pratt&whittney is the real hero here. What next ADA in the US made electric car manufacturers modify cars to make more noise. Blind people couldn't here them coming...
as soon as the plane lifted off, I Immediatly heard two beeps, know that couldnt be for the seatbelts, so would you jind advising me please, what those 2 beeps meant right after takeoff???
AKii, so your saying that it beeps a second time for those people who may have just forgotton to put their belts on before takeoff right, I kinda though that the stewardess before takeoff walk down the length of the plane checking on everybody.
soo quiet, the amount of power they produce and yet soo silent, dragsters might be like 3000hp and u can hear them for miles but these engines with like 156 kn of power is insane and they can only be heard for maybe a mile or less
Im also a Boeing fan but this is interresting how quiet it is. Still i dont know wich one is the quietest of the B737 Max or the A320neo. But im still a better Boeing fan. I like Boeing planes better.
PW has had a significant number of problems with this engine family ! Causing airlines to cancel flights and PW having to compensate them with $$$$$$$ !
That's one heck of a long push back.
I'm impressed at how quiet it is. And this from a Boeing fan.
Most Airbuses are very quiet. Even the older A320 is very quiet.
+Julio Romeresto the a330 is quite loud
The A350-XWB is super loud!

So I took a ride on the A320neo for the first time and I can't believe how quiet the engines were. I was completely amazed by the sound difference!
can't believe the engine is mounted so far forward from the leading edge of the wing.
Very rightly said!! Even I was really amazed at that!!😮
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who saw that about this airplane, you're so right.
To keep the center of weight as war foward as possible
Thus allowing to make longer aircrafts

4:53 I thought I heard a ship horn
Kevin P same
Kevin P yeah i heard it too on my flight on the 320 neo
Kevin P, that's the engine starting
HAHAHAHAHAHAH XD
After the first two minutes I checked whether the video was playing backwards. What a push-back!
Lol that is the longest push back ever .
Another Masterpiece ladies and gentlemen Pratt & Whitney you guys are amazing
There are no luxuries without engineering.
true many people underestimate how much engineering is used in some luxuries planes

Well I guess you could finally use the word "whisperliner" for good on this jet....
I'm really sad Air Canada didn't order any
Woooow!... Where is the sound!... Incredible!..🤯🤯🤯
We have some at Avianca Brazil and is very quiet indeed!
Make sure you do a FOD pick up on the entire taxiway prior to departure; it is true the engines are about 1.3 feet above the ground. Spirit has them here at KLAS more frequently now.

that is so much better than the deafening racket in a 737 Max....
Der seidenweiche Lauf dieser Triebwerke und das ohne jegliches plattern überzeugen jeden Fluggast. Mit so einer angenehmen Akustik ist der A320neo wohl das beste Flugzeug in
dieser Klasse.
WoW, that was quite a takeoff! I have never seen such a quicker taxi than this one! :) Thanks for they great video!
Wow that was super quiet. Thx for the upload.
Awesome aircraft, and like those big engines. Such a long push back, before flight. Awesome video.
No buzzsaw sound! Amazing, but disappointing for enthusiasts!
OMG - this is real improvement
That ground clearance is insane! I can’t wait until Frontier gets these!
I flew on a Lufthansa A320 twice in one day - officially via my connection in Germany. However after a trek through the airport and security I got back into the same aircraft with the same can crew - I was even I the same seat (the same or one row forward from where this video was filmed).

As much as I love noisy jet engines, it truly is remarkable how quite this beast is especially on takeoff.
Much improved and looks far better.
Nice video! The new A320NEO's are by far the quietest single aisle planes. When the the pilots increased power for takeoff I thought it was just spooling up and I was expecting to hear more noise, but then all of a sudden there was nothing. It is impressively quiet!
Wow! How did you get such a stable set up for recording?
I inspect these so there is a high chance that I inspected this engine. It's good to see them in flight.
Really quiet. Freakin' huge engine for a 320!
Fantastic video mate!
I was beginning to think they were going to push it all the way to the runway !!
Agreed Dave, I too thought they'd back up the whole flight. .....geezzzz...
Wow! so smooth and quiet.
This engine is so quiet, yet it whines like a Trent 800 I'm in love
more quiet than CFM!
I sure hope Pratt works out the kinks with this GTF engine; it's amazing and a true game-changer.
Great video.☺️ I prefer to hear the engine instead of it being completely silent.
This Pratt and Whittney is SO quiet! I say this is a huge success for Pratt and Whittney because on Boeing 737-200s, P&W made one of the noisest engines. I have to say the Airbus A320 (and A321) are (or should be) considered to be the neo whisper jet!
Which engine is that - RR, PW, GE... ???
At 0:24 we have a good view of the engine nacelle. We see two small winglets. Anybody know what is their purpose?
That is absolutely insane. It doesn't even sound like it's running!
love the A320❤
Wow so smooth and silent than the GE and RR engine 👍
I'm a true airbus fan love the quiteness of the a320 neo but a bit worried how the engines mounted extra forward cold you please do a vedio on how the engines mounted
Are the new engines built at Pratt & Whitney in their Conn. or Florida factory ?
Amazing new plane. I love it.
Fantastic video
Thanks for sharing... top quality, as usual. Seemed like a counterproductive pushback. At least they had time to complete the Before Takeoff checklist prior to taxiing ;-)
And engines so close to the ground..awesome neobird
I'm a Boeing fan 2, but this is just amazing..
FSXNOOB - GᗩᗰᕮS & ᗰOᖇᕮ
had to give you a thumbs up I'm a Pratt & Whitney fan but to hear that from a Boeing fan that's a nice compliment.👍✈
Wow ! I love all aircraft-engines ! Superb vid !!! Keep on filming....... :-)
Future is here. Good job Airbus!
I’ve gone on the A320-200 multiple times but never went on an a320neo
Not Cfm56 leap1a??
Well done friend i'm really enjoin with your video great
Wow unbelievable it is! very good job airbus!
Majestic Roars Not so much Airbus,Pratt&whittney is the real hero here. What next ADA in the US made electric car manufacturers modify cars to make more noise. Blind people couldn't here them coming...
Wow looks like bigger plane with this huge engine
Fantastic innovation and improvement. I will not miss the buzzsaw noise in the least.
omg.. Thats a lot quieter.. that take off was ridiculously quiet.. damn..
OH WOW THIS IS ASTONISHING!!...wait...**turns on volume**...well, still good.
Wow! That is quiet.
It really is a silent aircraft. Specially when compared to the very loud 737 (even the MAX series).
as soon as the plane lifted off, I Immediatly heard two beeps, know that couldnt be for the seatbelts, so would you jind advising me please, what those 2 beeps meant right after takeoff???
ldg gear up
You can hear this sound after departure when the gear is fully retracted. At the same time the lights for exit signs are automatically switched off.
They are for seatbelt and no smoking/no electronic device. The beeps usually comes again upon take off (maybe as a reminder)
AKii, so your saying that it beeps a second time for those people who may have just forgotton to put their belts on before takeoff right, I kinda though that the stewardess before takeoff walk down the length of the plane checking on everybody.
its for ldg gear up.......
Wow amazing!
Which Seat ?
Its CFM Leap-1A engine right ?
nice engine, no rattling and doesn't sound like on the last legs as usually at older A 320 engines
wow it flys backwards
Amazingly quiet!!!
New LH A320NEO delivery this week with fixed engines
what airport is this?
Compare it to a tu 95
I was flying only airbuses 320 (wizzair). this one is very quiet!
Thought it was getting pushed back to the end of the runway.
Is this Lufthansa?
8:12 Gear up sound!!
What is that sound: 4:54
flaps turning
My gawd, here they going to do the entire trip in reverse?!
goodbye buzzing my old friend :(
Seat?
İs this geared engine?
1900airspd 1900 yes ,the G
Superb #Airbus Cabin Insulation...!!!
impressive
Just wow!
7:00 the 747-400 doesn’t make this sound even when is turned off lol
Where we going? D-Check?
Wow you can't even hear them spooling down after takeoff.
A very long Push-Back.
After this Push-Back was the flight 1/2 hour shorter🤣😂
The longest pushback ever?
They call it the A320neo or A320 Sharklet?
A320 sharklet & A230 neo are the same.
soo quiet, the amount of power they produce and yet soo silent, dragsters might be like 3000hp and u can hear them for miles but these engines with like 156 kn of power is insane and they can only be heard for maybe a mile or less
The a320 Neo makes about 85 db whilest most aircraft make about 100 db
Impressive ..
Im also a Boeing fan but this is interresting how quiet it is. Still i dont know wich one is the quietest of the B737 Max or the A320neo. But im still a better Boeing fan. I like Boeing planes better.
Hey you! It's not about being the airliner company's fan.It is about being the fan of the maker of the engine.
Kind of sad that it doesn't buzz
PW has had a significant number of problems with this engine family ! Causing airlines to cancel flights and PW having to compensate them with $$$$$$$ !
Its quiet you can hear it whine up for a second
