    Siskel-"Denzel Washington, not a big name!"

    As usual, cheers to the Criterion Collection. Without them, a lot of people would have never been exposed to John Cassavetes work !

    I haven't seen The Mighty Quinn but I would like to. And also, Denzel's character and myself share the same first name. And I'd like to see True Believer. Too many people my age seem to act as if Robert Downey Jr. can only play Iron Man. He can do a lot.

      MIGHTY QUINN is gem that is lost in all Washington 's great movies and Oscar wins. It is magical and fun. True Believer is a very underrated film by James Woods. He finds out why he became a lawyer by taking a very usual case and the help of Robert Downy Jr.

      I have the honor of meeting Mr. Washington!! He was as amazing as you'd think, lol. I got confirmation from him thar as a populace, we've ALL been mispronouncing his name.
      It's pronounced "Dencel", soft "z", like "pencil", not "DenZELL".

      TRUE BELIEVER is based on a true story, except that the lawyer in question had never sold out in the first place! (Wouldn't make much of a movie...)

    I saw Cousins last night and I forgot how good it was. The best line is when Sean Young asks William Peterson do you think they slept together yet. And Peterson says I don’t care about them sleeping together I care about them having a relationship. This movie shows they sex and one night stands mean very little compared to true love. The first affair that happens pushes their spouses to try to get them back but turns into true love which beats a mear physical relationship

    Fun fact: Robert Townsend, who starred in "The Mighty Quinn" and the late Suzanne Douglas (RIP) who starred in "Tap", would later co-star together in the sitcom "The Parent 'Hood" in 1995.

    The review of the tap dancing movie is indicative of something I have noticed... While Ebert is a better debater... and is more analytical and can pick apart why his view on the movie is the correct one better than Siskel... I find myself agreeing with Siskel's reviews more. That tap dancing movie came across and cheesy and cliched. I would have hated it. SIskel may not be as artful in explaining why a movie is bad, but when he thinks it is bad, he is often right.

    Siskel & Ebert championed The Mighty Quinn so much when it was released, but for some reason, I couldn't get into it. I thought True Believer and Cousins were much better films. Even though RDJ is wasted in the film, James Woods gives a top notch performance! It's right up there with Cop and Diggstown!

      I had the same issue with The Mighty Quinn. It's one of those films they endorsed a number of times but I remember my parents didn't like it, and neither did I once I rented it the first time. Cousins is a good movie, underrated still.

    There is nothing unbelievable about someone being saved from a life of crime by a creative passion such as dance (or any other artistic endeavor) and choosing one over the other. Strange that they would struggle to understand this concept, as they did with Tap.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones 3 года назад

      @@sha11235 Putting it in both places couldn't hurt. Wayback is a good backup if the S&E site ever disappears again. A site that's only owned or run by one person is very vulnerable to disappearing, as the previous S&E site did. Wayback is currently a safer place than RUclips for videos with potential copyright issues, but of course that could change anytime.

    I recently bought the Cassavetes five film collection and I am almost in agreement with Siskel regarding Killing of a Chinese Bookie. There are two cuts of the film and IMO, the 1978 one is vastly superior and it's a good film overall but it's not prime Cassavetes.
