I have made this it's delicious. Everyones loves my stuffing I use 1 grated carrot, 1 loaf bread the white part only as you did Matt, 1 finely chopped onion (love my kmart chopper), packet of mixed herbs, tons of butter!
Dont know why people get upset it's not a traditional ground hangi, we already know that duh, this is just the oven version, call it something else if it makes you feel less offended. It's still a great family meal though.
I used this method last night for dinner.
Fantastic results
And enough kai left over for today.
Thanks for posting method.
Cheers Mark
Looks yummy. I'm going to try this in the weekend.
Never in my 77 years of cooking for whanau and at various maraes, have I ever seen carrot added to the stuffing....so I'm gunna give your burnt butter version a bash next weekend. Because we're lucky enough to have plenty of watercress and puha out the back, we'll use that instead of cabbage. I also place manuka smoked woodchips in a small oven proof dish on the oven rack underneath the food tray. Gives the kai a lovely smoky flavor. Thanks for the recipe...
Try teatree underneath the cabbage leaves too. Emense flavors. Yumm.
Never thought of doing this in the oven, Going to do this for the fam this weekend, Love a good Hangi and this is about as close as I'm getting without digging that hole and smoking out the neighbors 😅
This is so yummy!!!
You've hit the closest jackpot bro, to the real outdoor deal. haha
Thanks again & take care.
That’s a flash stuffing 😂👍👍have to try it looks nice
Little trick I learnt to give it that Smokey flavour is sprinkle smoked paprika over it awesome addition
Nothing wrong with the oven version brother
HARD FAST don’t have dig hole and burn 🤙🤙

Hey there Matt,
I'm a new subscriber to your channel & I must say, that although I love the traditional "underground earth" method, THIS is absolutely amazing!! A terrific method for anyone wishing to emulate the traditional, but in a slightly "different" way.
The traditional Hāngī is so melt in the mouth delicious, but this is also amazing & makes for a superb final result.
Thank you for creating & sharing & I am appreciating what you do here.
Peace bro✌

Stop it your making me hungry 😋
I have had the traditional Hungi when I was 9 years old. Now, a few weeks ago, I bought myself the easy Hungi 10 L kit.
Yummo. Cook us up traditional cultural dishes from your childhood!
Comin up :)
I don’t even like taste of hangi but this video made me hungry. Our whanau is having matariki Kai on Sunday, so gonna do this . Do I cook 160 fan bake ? Thank you
I prefer pumpkins lol made bro gonna try cooking tonight !
❤🤤✨🙌🏾❤️
have you tried with manuka chips under the cabbage
🎉
Rice pudding for new years lunch?👀🫶
Very cool! 15.dollars fir 3 kumara, yeh.. with you on the never gonna happen. Dad did traditional, but got these fancy hangi steamers. It's not the same. There's this dude who sells seasoning he swears is just like hangi. But you need a special pot that cost 200dollars to pit it in.😅🫣 Would double wrapping woodchips, etc in foil on a shelf below the tray-mimic the smoke of hangi rocks maybe? Or borrow an actual hangi rock and heat in oven before food goes in.
Great feed, thank you Chef!🦋♥️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Use Wrights liquid smoke 💨 to marinate the meat, it’s not as good as the earthy taste but the smoked flavour is close enough.
Slow and low makes everything great.
Tell em Toddy
Making me hungry. Great job but, if you can find manuka concentrate and spray the layers, it's even better.
Nice
Tortured...watching the taste test and thinking ice gotta go get some cabbage n meat... ok make my bread stale so I can make this for tea tomorrow. Yumness
Thanks now I know how to do oven hangi
Enjoy brudda
bro veg option buy some frozen Ufi (casava) or kalo defrost then add comes out reka in Hangi
Tu meke brother ,I don't mind the traditional way but this way cuts time and mahi also looks FIRE
Ok will try your stuffing recipe but bro no bread crusts??? I feel guilty cutting them off like my nannies in spirit are frowning at me 🤣🤣🤣🙄
But imma do it! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Celebrating Te Tiriti Kiaora!!
Feed em to the birds, they deserve a treat cuz haha
how does foil make the hangi smell and taste
Ow! Get the bread in Tha pot bro ahhhaha 😂Chur
Chur bro i could taste that with my eyes lol tino reka mybro
Chur my bro
hello, I wus wundering if, while you cook or do your in ground hangi for 7 or 8 hours........ are you permitted to drink beer, while waiting ? if so, how much? Thank you.
Are swordfish steaks; and clams cooked in the hangi oven?
You can cook whatever you like, it'll probably be tough to eat tho
Tino Reka😜
Looks good bro, I have to say it though...she's a sin without the kumara in it. 😁✊️
Does it TASTE like hangi?
Those kumara prices are just wicked high at times my bro 😂
cool but why waste the crust when that the best part of stuffing, also that what holds flavour in stuffing...
Not true, the birds like the crust more than I do
Is that fan bake or normal bake?
Not like that you don't, that's just a roast hahaha haha 🤣🤣🤣
Bro .... Gotta do a steam Pudding !
Craving one now
Cool bro next time we love to see you eatin the fat off the poaka.
Mean Maori Mean bro
Does it smell like a hangi or a roast hahaha hahaha 😂😂
What was the first cut of meat?
Lamb shoulder chops
Thanks ; ) It looked really good. And I love lamb. @@mattreynecke
kia ora for this…add some drops of liquid smoke to the meat before covering….he reka rawa!
Down with that bro instead of normal chicken try smoked chicken or pork bones and and corn it ups the game
Tau ke e te rangatira, he rawe te ki matakitaki i to mahi.
Oven Hangi lol
bro I have been doing hangi all my life and if yr hangi takes 7or8 hours yr doing it wrong
7-8 hours, how many people are you feeding. Almost all hangi whether it's ground or steamed takes 3-4 hours. There is no right or wrong way as long as it comes out cooked 😂😂
Why waste the crusts?
15$ for Kumara! Farh out.
My lower back is not good to dig a hole 🕳️ these days I'd do this all day long
Ryum
Pork = introduced
Beef = introduced
Chicken = introduced
Potato's = introduced
Sweet potato = introduced
The only "Traditional" part is the cooking 😂
Whilst I do think pigs were introduced noone knows where the Māori poaka kunekune pig originates as that specific breed of pig is found nowhere else in the world. The Māori chickens the largest in the world was the moa lol, that's the name for chicken all throughout the Pacific. Sweet Potato/kumara and Māori potatoes such as the purple peruperu potato are native in that they existed with Māori pre-european times. Yes traditional hangi pre-european times would have been quite different consisting of things such as kumara, potatoes, watercress, bush asparagus 'pikopiko', seaweed, seal meat, various birds such as 'kereru' pigeon and duck etc. Also hangis varied by region, northland tribes would have had taro, southern tribes muttonbird and so on.
kumara is not introduced, but the three varieties we currently use are, same goes for potatoes, its disputed if there were potatoes here before Europeans, and those varieties are lost now if they were, but theres plenty of Maori sources that claim to have had riwai prior to Europeans and why would that not be true?
Never seen stuffing made like this, dont know about the carrot in there, not my cup of tea, mean looking feed tho bro chur chur
Hangi would be better halal version
Feel free to customise when you make it
Hanging is very tender but boring
Huh 🤔
Ok let’s actually get honest…..Eating a hangi is really disgusting!
Food is mush, it takes ages to make, and it seriously tastes terrible.
CHURR 💯%🤙🏼
Most people know that it never taste like hangi in a oven.its the earth and stones were the flavor, comes from.
Wrong.
Who gives a crap it’s cooked and still taste hella good fool lol
What a actor you are.
Talk to much
