  • Nagato sits at the bottom of Bikini Atoll since its sinking caused by damage from the Baker underwater nuclear bomb test conducted during Operation Crossroads, a nuclear bomb test series performed by the United States in 1946.
During WWII, the Japanese naval capital ship was home to Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. Yamamoto is credited with starting the attack on Pearl Harbor from the Nagato with the code phrase "Niitaka yama nobore" (Climb Mount Niitaka) on December 2, 1941, driving the United States into the Pacific theater of World War II.
The sandy bottom around this historic ship is more than 180ft below the surface. Nagato is nearly upside down, so the props are right on top. Its superstructure and starboard rail hold up Negato enough to make the bow and aft guns easily accessible from the port side. The crushed bridge reaches out into the sand. Within the body of the wreck are reminders of ship life in the 1940s - rice cookers, light bulbs, gas masks, and voice tubes for intra-ship communication.
