I actually love having quiet mornings, but as soon as I start working I need those lofi beats... I think they're a good balance... not totally silent but also not distracting... though if you're addicted to background noise, makes sense to give your brain a break from it all! 💛💛💛

This is so true. I protect my morning as much as I can. Social media is so hard on my mental health that I have to be strict. Starting my morning quietly and not touching my phone for the first hour is so so good. A rushed morning throws off the whole day.

Oh Hannah, you sound exactly like me last year before I got my adhd diagnosis. I thought having a "quiet" morning routine would fix my distraction, but I couldn't keep it up bc I was relying on willpower alone. For anyone reading, scientifically dopamine is what actually makes you feel motivation. An overload is bad, but it's a necessary neurotransmitter, and adhd brains are deficient in it to begin with. Hence distraction/low motivation. After a year of trying different medications I've landed on Noocube, which is a natural brain supplement. It helps me focus, get more done, and keep my house clean. But I let myself listen to podcasts now bc my motivation would plummet otherwise. Sorry for unsolicited advice, either way I hope you find some peace and understanding of how your brain works best. Love you Hannah❤️

I've been feeling the same exact way about how my attention span has shifted over the past few years since lockdown. This video makes me feel really inspired to dedicate my mornings to reteaching myself this positive habit. Not being able to focus on one thing for a long period of time like I used to in the past has been stressful to me. I think it's a big contributor to my lingering depression and inability to tackle and complete personal projects outside of work. Thanks so much for talking openly about it and giving this routine a shot - I'm going to try my best to emulate! xo

something that has helped me reduce social media use is setting daily time limits on apps and scheduling a block of time (for me it’s until 10am) where I can’t use certain apps. these are both iphone settings! highly recommend checking out “down time” and “app limits” in settings if you haven’t already

It's funny that this video is about being able to focus and get stuff done and basically feel OK in a silent place, I normally don't have any touble with silence, but right now I have this video playing in the background only beacause it's easier to get my work done while listening to something, even if it's just your voice in backgroung even if I'm not really paying attetion to what you're saying and I'm focused on my work, it helps to have something to listen to while I'm working. It's just funny that I'm doing exactly what the video tells me that I shoudn't be doing

When I study I NEED to have something going on in the background in order to not getting distracted. Something that has helped me finding the right balance is listening to music in a foreign language I can't understand a single word of. For example CHILL (guitar w voice) korean songs, or Sweden, or whatever is really far from the languages I speak (Italian and english).
In this way I keep on having a good mood with chill music playing while not getting distracted. OR I just play asmrs 😂

Tysm for helping me realize that I’m not the only one struggling with limiting screen time. Making me feel productive. And honestly I need to stop listening to podcast because I think the main reason I use too much screen time is because I don’t have anything or anyone to entertain me. I don’t have a pet, any kids my age in my neighborhood, people to just go over to their house. It’s so hard but I’m pushing I just have that feeling in me to turn it on!

Hey Hannah! I love your videos - just wanted to drop a comment about behavior change and these "tiny habits". I'm a senior in college now and one of the best courses I have even taken was a class called Exercise and Health Psychology. One of our semester long projects was picking some habit that we were going to break/introduce into our lives and practice it for the duration of the course. I actually picked something similar to what you're doing now: to detox from screen time before bed. I learned through this course that change can't happen by simply removing a behavior. You have to replace it with something else. I only found success after I intentionally filled the time that I would be on my phone with another activity: reading, music, etc. Food for thought!

Not me watching this on my lunch because I have recently set these EXACT rules for myself about a week ago! (I also work from home for myself) -- and it makes SUCH a difference!
Some tips I have to help are shutting all notifications except for essential ones (using those focus modes automatically at certain times), I use the app that makes your phone into a digital clock and my brain then forgets its my phone, and also one scrolling loop I can sometime get caught in that isnt social media is amazon. I also only reply to messages at like 12p, 3pm, and then after 6pm. It keeps me from feeling that urgency to do something now buzz when something pops up! And if I need something in the background - I find itself really helpful for me to play a "work with me - no music" from youtube with pomodoros and not showing the persons face. It helps to keep me on task but feel like I am coworking with someone and the typing asmr is enough for my brain to not get tense from the silence (also using a fan or white noise in headphones is super helpful.)

This also reminds me of this part of the song “All I Really Want” by Alanis Morissette-
“Why are you so petrified of silence?
Here, can you handle this? **moment of silence**
Did you think about your bills, your ex, your deadlines, or when you think you're going to die? Or did you long for the next distraction?”

    Ahhhh YES. This video.
For me, I’m suuuuch a procrastinator. Like I will get things done, but at the absolute last second and I will rush to do it. I work very good under pressure, but I don’t need to live my entire life like that.
I used to lie to myself by telling myself I will watch the youtube videos to motivate me and ease into it. What would actually happen is I never get up. 😭
I had to force myself into the silence. Just turn my brain off and start doing things. Let the momentum take me as far as it can. If I think about it, I’ll never get it done. Even as far as not making to-do lists anymore because I will overthink it and never do anything.

You can set it up so only certain people can contact you during it and also you can set up your home screen to change with each focus you set up. So you could completely take social media off your Home Screen. Also setting up limits on apps like instagram has helped me immensely. Hopefully that helps 😊

  • @LelliAmi

What you're describing almost sounds like my experience with inattentive ADHD. My brain doesn't produce enough dopamine on its own, so I have to produce it through medication and external processes before I can do anything. The difference is that taking away those things would not help me focus. I need them *to* focus. I just have to be sure to use the right stimuli so I don't overcorrect and get distracted. Brains are weird.

I just put background low-ish (volume) jazz or classical music helps with the boredom of mundane tasks and it’s not super overbearing or overloads the senses.
