Here’s the first full lesson in my new “Solo Studies” RUclips series, in which I transcribe and teach classic guitar solos.
I toured for many years with both Brit Floyd and The Australian Pink Floyd Show (TAPFS), so I thought I would start with some classic David Gilmour and teach you how to play the outro solo to the studio version of Comfortably Numb from The Wall album.
    #PinkFloydGuitarLesson #ComfortablyNumbGuitarLesson #ComfortablyNumb
Incidentally, I'm left handed, but I horizontally flip my tuition videos in order to make them easier for most "normal" people to follow.
The guitar and pickups were hand-built by Dave Walsh at Eternal Guitars & Hot Rod Pickups in Chichester, UK.
I am also using a Kemper Profiler, Elixir Strings and Hawk Picks.
I hope you enjoy this lesson. There's much more to come very soon, so hit subscribe for regular content, including twice weekly lessons from my "Lickorama" series.

It just shows you how utterly brilliant Gilmore is doesn’t it? I see you play it there it looks ridiculously simple you’re hardly moving... but ‘wow’. The bends, the timing, the vibrato - just amazing. Gilmour really is amazing.

I’ve been trying to learn this solo since buying the Steve Tarshis Gilmour tab book in 1986. I could never get near the 2nd solo. I have been watching this vid for a week now and have pretty much nailed it. So clear, so precise, beautiful phrasing and well broken down. I guess being locked in my room with Covid was a help too but thank you Bobby. Amazing!

Pretty much the most beautiful guitar solo of all time... well done and with a clear teaching tutorial by Bobby Harrison. What puts this tutorial above and beyond is Bobby's 'phrasing' or collecting the 'statements' made by the guitar as this solo goes along. Why this is important is that it differentiates between just playing the music and truly making the guitar 'talk.' By paying attention to that 'feeling' that Bobby also incorporates in this tutorial now we, who simply appreciate this music, can elevate our playing as Bobby has shared here. Thanks for a great tutorial of a great guitar solo Bobby.

If that's the case I don't think you've heard many guitar players!! tepid tepid! a glorified pop song!! Listen to Allan Holdsworth on the live version of "White Lines" recorded in Japan! now that's what you would call a guitar solo bud! Allan was an innovator and genius and a guitarist guitar player to say the least, by people in the know!

Great lesson Bobby, the most accurate and best explained version I have seen on YT.
You are right when you say the high note after the funky chord bit was dropped in. In an interview, Dave Gilmour explained that he recorded a whole bunch of different versions of the solo on different tracks then went through and picked the best bits from each one to make the final solo by switching between the tracks. So, when it came to that high note, he would have whipped down one fader and another one up at that point.

As my memory is total bollocks I needed to write down the music / tab so I spent a very very long time watching and listening to your lesson bar by bar and succeeded in completing my goal using GuitarPro.Timing is tricky though getting everything right. Now I can play along with the Gilmourish backing track. I added sections from the Pulse version watching Brit Floyd and Aussie Floyd amongst others. I've just also completed Time and Money so great and much appreciated !!

Bobby, thank you! This is exactly what I've been looking for. I love the way you get right to it and go through the parts without getting bogged down. I find that in some lessons it's easy to lose momentum and hard to keep the entire composition in your head. Especially for a long complex solo like this one. Appreciate you taking the time to teach us mere mortals! Sorry but have to say you're an amazing player and would be superhuman if you incorporated all 4 fingers :)

    • @BobbyHarrisonGuitar
      @BobbyHarrisonGuitar  Год назад +2

Thank you so much for the kind words. The intervallic nature of the pentatonic scale and blues licks in general lend themselves to using 3 fingers. It's often pointless to use your pinky just for the sake of it. However, if you check out some of my other videos, you'll see that I certainly do use all 4 fingers (and sometimes my thumb) on the fretboard, as I'm a big fan of 3 note per string legato lines.

Everyone has a personal opinion to almost anything however honestly hearing Bobby play when he was with Brit Floyd why in the name of God did he not play both the solo parts? I knew he was an accomplished guitarist but the ease of his playing is much smoother and emotional than Damion, just my opinion but this was really nice to see and hear the instructions from a true master whom Sir David Gilmour no doubt would approve.

Bobby,, this is amazing. Thank you for such a clear description. I'm in such admiration of your playing.. Gilmour is a special voice. He learned playing mainly through his own singing and i think this is a huge key.. Its been frustrating for me. I know the guitar neck through and through and a lot of theory and i can jam for hours soloing with intermingling chord progressions against my own backing tracks but as soon as I try to tackle a pre existing solo my mind becomes disabled. My brain simply isn't hardwired to carry a melody in my head that i can hum for hours (such as this solo) and translate it to my fingers. Also i find it easier to solo while following the logic of a chord progression. I can hammer out the chords of this song here in ten different positions on the neck with my own soloing bits BUT for the life of me can't carry the way he does it like you can. I think this has to do with genetics,, the same way some people can pick up a foreign language easier than others. the link between mind and tounge ect ect. Do you think it would make sense to teach the solo in how it works within the context of the chord progression? This weekend I'm going to put hours in on this! I'm really not into learning popular songs by others but this one here is such a part of me since being a teenager that I just need to nail it. This solo has been stuck in my head since 78 when my life changed when i first listened to this entire album in front of my speakers in a beanbag chair. thanks again.

Bobby, great tutorial. I do, however, want to point out a typo in your header. You state, "Learn The Solo in 30 MINUTES" You meant 30 HOURS, right? I can read music; the notes are no problem. How to play those notes, that is the problem. Nailing the bends alone is no easy task. You got 1 (whole note), 1/4, 1 1/2, 1/2. Just a little off and it sounds sour. I got a good vibrato but when the G string on the 9 is bent up to where the A string lives, my vibrato is not so good anymore. I rate your tutorial "top shelf" for teaching how to play the notes of Comfortably Numb's outro solo. I am getting it by meticulously following your example. Thank you.

As a forever fan and very new guitar player, I appreciate all your amazing and very detailed lessons. As well as being a GREAT musician/guitarist, you are an awesome teacher, and I love that you go into such detail explaining note by note. Keep the PF coming please! Would love to see your tutorial on the relatively short 'Mother' solo eventually...I know there are several lessons on you tube for that solo, but I prefer your lessons, because they are simply the best. You mentioned you were in two PF tribute bands...what was the other one besides Brit Floyd? Will have to see if there is any videos of you in this band on RUclips...love watching you play live. Wondering if you have any amp setting advice for this lesson...I always struggle with dialing in that distinctive sound. I have a small but decent new Blackstar V2 40, any advice appreciated. Thank you so much, Anthony. I will definitely be making more of these lessons once I have my camera and lighting gear set up (I'm currently between addresses). The other Floyd tribute was The Australian Pink Floyd show. I played with them as dep for about 3 years, mainly on the US/Canadian tours from 2008 until 2010. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the Blackstar V2 40. I have an HT5 that sounds great.

Absolutely the best tutorial video on comfortably numb, and I wish I had the ear to hear it and play it. I noticed he said several times that's what I'm hearing I find that's real talent and a very well trained ear

Thank you very much sir. I managed to learn it... in 30 days, not in 30 minutes ;) and it was well worth it.
I really enjoyed your way of teaching, just as I really enjoyed when you came to Madrid in 2014. It was a wonderful concert.
I will continue learning with you.

Pulse was played way too slow. Not sure why he did that but it doesn't sound right slowed down.

Nailed his sound and playing style. Shame you never got to play that solo with the Floyd tribute band. One of my favourite things Dave Gilmour did was on Maccas 'No More Lonely Nights' he just took that song to a whole different place.

Thank you very much. I love Gilmour's guitar work on 'No More Lonely Nights'. Instantly recognisable.
