I Am A Native Youth Olympian | INDIE ALASKA

  • Every year, hundreds of Alaska Native teens from all over the state gather for the Native Youth Olympics (NYO). They compete in games that have been passed down generation to generation.
    In this episode of INDIE ALASKA, you'll meet Autumn Ridley, who in 2012 broke the world record for the Alaskan High Kick, one of NYO's most popular events.
    INDIE ALASKA is an original video series produced by Alaska Public Media in partnership with PBS Digital Studios.
    The weekly videos will capture the diverse and colorful lifestyles of everyday Alaskans at work and at play. Together, these videos will present a fresh and authentic look at living in Alaska.

    These Indie Alaska videos are wonderful. As an Alaskan now living in Japan, these bring me back home. This is doing a true public service. Keep up the good work and interesting stories!

    So nice to see the real Alaska in these Indie Alaska videos. Keep it up. They're great. This one is so good. It conveys the spirit of NYO... one of the most amazing cultural and athletic games in the world.

    Look for Nicolas Devens, our second oldest, in future competitions. He broke the Valdez High school record at 81" in this event. He will most likely be going to Arctic winter games. This girl is awesome with an awesome attitude. Nice video.

    We met Autumn Ridley in June. She is a most lovely young woman.She is completing high school in Anchorage and working as a guide at Alaska Native Heritage Center there.
