Yeah the people who decided to kill of some of the original cast in this movie was because the new toys they made for the new characters won't selling enough, their smart idea was to kill of those original characters and discontinue their toys, just so kids back in the day had no choice but to buy the new toys, but all it achieved was making those killed of characters and their toys more popular and the new toys sell less, that's why they slowly brought all those killed of characters and their toys back

It's hard to appreciate this if you weren't a fan of the 80's cartoon and toys (as I was), but the death of Optimus Prime particularly, and of so many other original characters, was shocking to me as a 10 year old! I now see it as a vehicle to clear out the old characters so they could introduce new ones and sell more toys (80's cartoons were almost universally commercials for toys), but they at least made a hell of a story out of it! I still love this movie, all these years later - they got legit voice actors for the new roles (this was actually film legend Orson Welles's last role) and put some banger songs in to pump the audience up (Stan Bush's "You Got the Touch" and "Dare", as well as Weird Al's "Dare to Be Stupid" are the highlights for me)!

Spike, the guy with Bumblebee, was the 80's show's equivalent of Sam Witwicky. He is Spike Witwicky, and they do have his dad in the original show too. The film was 20 years after the original show so teenage Spike was fully grown up and we got to see his kid Daniel.
I loved this movie as a kid and it (mostly) holds up well today. I don't think any of the live action films have quite captured the feel of this. It had heart, action, a great soundtrack, shock and awe, deaths, etc...
Even all the random autobot/decepticon corpses you see throughout the battle at Autobot city were the main characters for the original 2 seasons of the show so as an 80s kid, it was wild to see all the heros and villains die, badly, in the first 20-30 minutes.

@@c.glazercrush3994 i'd argue it was hotrod because he was pure of heart in a way that Magnus wasn't. Ultra Magnus was a soldier, and we saw it time and time again.
at one point in the film, he thinks cup, hot rod and the dino bots die in an explosion and he's like "I cant deal with that now". Imagine HotRod saying that about Magnus and the others, we just can't because it's not in his character. He was more of a childlike optimus prime, than ultra magnus was, but the movie uses very clever misdirection with Ultra Magnus to make us think Hot Rod isn't all that special until he is

It was gut wrenching. I had already decided to stop buying any new Transformers before I saw the movie. My cousin got me Scourge and my mother got me Hot Rod. So after the movie I was happy for Hot Rod.
The numbers for Hot Rod were extremely high. Even better than Megatron. The only Transformer with higher technical specification numbers than "Roddy" was Optimus Prime.
Although I didn't have Ultra Magnus so I don't know if he was higher. Same with Galvatron and Cyclonus.
Anyway I can totally understand that it was Hod Rod's destiny.

The autobots dying was a way for the creator to get rid of them all including optimus to make way for the newer characters. Keep in mind that children had never seen any of the autbots dying before so when they began dying by megatron it completely shocked them as it was the very first time that an actual transformer had been killed on the screen and trust me when optimus died it completely upset children and the parents which caused so much backlash on the film. It also changed the ending for gi joe which instead of killing duke they put him in a coma. Transformers 1986 shocked the generation so much

oh wow. Never expected to see one of the reactors I watch watching this... this was my favorite movie when I was a kid. Watched the VHS so many damn times the tape broke. Still have the whole movie memorized verbatim and can recite it on command. Way way better than any of the Michael Bay movies, IMO. One of the first animated movies with an all-star cast... Orson Welles, Hollywood legend, did the voice for Unicron for most of the movie but actually passed away during production and Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek's Spock) filled in for him for the remainder of his lines and also did the voice of Galvatron. Lionel Stander (Kup) was another long-time Hollywood star. John Moschita (known as the Micro Machine man and world record holder for fastest talker) voice Blurr. Judd Nelson of the Breakfast Club and Hollywood's "Brat Pack" did Hot Rod. Legendary voice actor Peter Cullen was always the voice of Optimus Prime... he reprises his role in the Bayformers movies. I think Optimus Prime dying in this was the first time I saw my mom cry watching a movie. They killed off damn near all of the old Transformers characters to make room for new toys... pretty brutal for a kids' movie.

  • @legionaireb
    @legionaireb 11 месяцев назад +7

SWEET! I really wanted you to see this once you started watching the Bay films (I think I mentioned this in one of those)
4:08 - Okay, so here's a brief history lesson. In 1984, Hasbro released the Transformers toy line. As He-Man had done before, they co-launched it with a cartoon to help promote the toys. The series (and toys) became MEGA popular and the series continued. In 1986, Transformers: The Movie was released in theaters. It was created to bridge the gap between the first series of characters (referred to now as 'Gen 1') and the new characters (Gen 2).
4:14 - So Unicron is the devourer of worlds: a transformer who eats planets to fuel it's own continued existence. Although in the original continuity he is a lone evil, in later Transformers continuities he is the Transformers version of the Devil, and his good counterpart is the entity Primus. (Spoilers: Primus is the robot form of Cybertron.)
4:43 - This is the hard rock version of the original transformers theme song. ruclips.net/video/nLS2N9mHWaw/видео.html
5:50 - Spike and Sparkplug were the son/father team that were the allies of the Autobots in the first generation. They were Witwickys. Sam from the Bay films was an original character created as a reference to Spike, but toy lines of the later films apparently introduced Spike and Sparkplug as Sam's cousin and uncle.
6:08 - Megatron is actually an assault rifle, as I believe we'll see shortly (he was a tank in the toy line). The boombox is Soundwave, who was a communications satellite in Revenge of the Fallen.
6:33 - As I said, this movie was intended to be a bridge between Gen 1 and Gen 2. As such, Hasbro had no qualms about killing off Gen 1 characters. Even major ones...
12:59 - The soundtrack is one of the most memorable things about this movie, and it came about in a pretty interesting way. The movie's composer had an unusual approach to scoring a movie: he would watch the movie without sound and then put in songs that he felt matched the tone of the scene. This lead to many epic and absurd moments in the movie that have resonated through time.
15:50 - Although the early concepts that would eventually evolve into the All Spark were first introduced in Gen 1/2 (The Matrix of Leadership is a big early influence), the concept as it is currently understood originated in the Michael Bay movies. Before that, the concept of 'Sparks' had come into being. In order for Transformers to be something more than just robots, they needed a soul. The concept was first obliquely explored in Gen 2, where we saw that the creation of truly 'living' Transformers required contact with the supercomputer at the core of Cybertron, Vector Sigma. (The Transformers: Animated continuity would combine the All Spark with the 'Key to Vector Sigma' concept from Gen 2, in fact.) The finalized idea of a 'Spark' being a Transformer's soul would first appear in the CG Transformers series Beast Wars (the main influence for the upcoming Rise of the Beasts movie (which incidentally includes a major reference to THIS movie)).
31:53 - So the dude with the mustache is Wreck-Gar, the leader of the Junkions of planet Junk. You might have noticed the song in the background: Weird Al Yankovic's Devo pastiche Dare To Be Stupid. Wreck-Gar appears several times in the aforementioned Transformers: Animated. In that show, as a reference to the original character, Wreck-Gar is voiced by none other than Weird Al himself.
34:35 - Wanna see something really crazy? ruclips.net/video/X8S3y_xxcqc/видео.html

      Just a couple of corrections:
      1. Megatron's gun transformation was actually a WW2 German handgun called the Walther P38. In fact, nearly all of the Gen 1 Decepticon vehicle transformations are based on WW2 vehicles.
      2. Blaster turns into a boombox; Soundwave turns into a Walkman.
Thanks for the history lesson. 🙂👍🏿

This movie was actually *really* controversial when it came out.
The main reason is because it straight up killed off multiple fan favorite characters and replaced them with new ones. Optimus himself being the most famous example as there was genuine pushback at his death in particular.
Add on top of that the fact that not everyone saw this in theatres at the time, so when the show came back and people saw that half the cast was different, there was a lot of confusion.

  • @ChaoticButterfly

Yes, Spike is "Sam Witwicky." In the G1 cartoon, he's a teenager. He's an adult in the movie, and Daniel is his son. In the series, it's Spike/Sam and his dad, "Sparkplug," and he's the audience expy, who hangs out with Bumblebee.
Orson Welles, who voiced Unicron, performed his lines, and passed away five days, later. His voice was so weak that they had to run it through a lot of synths and stuff to make it sound like that, but after reading the script, he was really down to play it.
Fun fact, they threw the "Oh shit" part in there, to get a PG rating, to force parents to watch it with their kids. Which was a bad idea, because there were LOTS of kids crying over Optimus Prime dying, and parents demanding their money back. This caused them to make the GI Joe movie Direct-to-Video, as well as changing Duke's death, to a "coma." It also caused talks of a Jem and the Holograms movie to be canceled.
Oh, and I'd be a Decepticon... straight up. I wanted to be Megatron's human pet that helped him with his schemes, when I was little... I had a crush on him, and Soundwave (the Boom Box)... tho Perceptor (the microscope) could possibly talk me into the Autobot side.😅

    Best motion picture soundtrack EVER!!!
Leo, I saw this movie in theaters back in 1986.... I was 19 at the time. I won't lie, or even exaggerate.... it's better (IMHO) than all of the Bay live action movies combined. With that said, the newer movie "Bumblebee" was really, really good! If you watch the two close enough together, you'll see a lot of references to the original in Bumblebee... especially the song "The Touch". Which, I'd love to see you do a reaction to the official music video to.
While technically it WAS a 90+ minute advertisement for mew toys....it still had a really good story, and like I said, an incredibly BANGING soundtrack. I was a fan back then, and remain a fan of the animated series (Generation 1) to this very day.
Oh, Leo.... have you ever watched the HBO series called "OZ"? If not, you should do that one. Great series! As is "Orphan Black", which would blow your mind.
4:45 - OH! While I'm thinking of it..... there's a band called "Cybertronic Spree", who originally started out performing the soundtrack for this movie but have also branched out into doing their own original music. They wear Transformers (Generation 1) costumes, and rocking out on stage. I saw them live this past January, and they are fantastic! Do yourself a favor and look them up on RUclips. You wont regret it.
5:55 - "Whitwhicky" was the last name used in pretty much every version of the story. Comics, Cartoon, and Live Action. In the cartoon, it was "Spark-Plug" (the father), Spike (the son), and Daniel (the grandson). I forget what the first name was in the comic books, but in the Bay movies, it was "Sam".
6:10 - No, that's Soundwave. Megatron is a "Walter P-38 pistol". Funny thing about that, is that I have the "Movie Edition" of Megatron's action figure. However, because it's older than the "orange tip" law, I can't sell it without modifying it to have the orange tip, which would distinguish it from an actual firearm of the same size.
10:00 - That's Blaster. He turned into a "Boom Box", or "Ghetto Blaster" (which is where the name came from).
10:10 - Leo, both Soundwave and Blaster had "cassette" Transformers inside of them. This is why you should have watched the actual cartoon series before watching this movie, to know all of these minor details. Also, to familiarize yourself with some of the characters who were "killed off" early in the movie.
13:00 - As I said above.... this soundtrack is the best one EVER. I've purchased it in at 4 different formats: Album, Cassette tape, Compact Disc, and Digital (iTunes). The last of which had extra tracks not included in previous versions. I've bought the movie itself in the following formats: VHS (twice... both "full screen" and "Wide screen"), DVD (the 20th and 25th anniversary editions), Blu-Ray. and Digital (iTunes). THAT is how much I loved that movie and its soundtrack.
15:00 - Oh, and I remember being 19 years old watching this in theaters..... and I will never forget the kids whose parents brought them to see it..... and their reactions to the scene of Optimus Prime, dying. The kids literally wailed as if they had just lost one of their parents. Don't get me wrong..... I was sad that Prime died, too.... but I didn't lose my shit crying about it. Then again, these ARE children we're talking about here.
15:45 - Also, THIS is the real reason we celebrate "Prime Day" on Amazon..... Optimus gave his life, and this is how we celebrate it.
16:00 - The "All Spark" was created for the Bay movies. But, if you want to know what it's based on, look up "Vector Sigma" from the original series.
16:48 - No, not Barry White..... but Orson Wells, in his final movie role ever. Look it up.
38:10 - Hot Rod was "The Chosen One" (to use a Star Wars vernacular). If you remember, Optimus chose Ultra Magnus to be his successor, but the Matrix knew Hot Rod was the next in line for leadership. That's why it glowed when he caught it. Hot Rod was able to "open" the Matrix, and save them all... because HE was the one "next in line". There is an episode of the Original Series titled "The Key to Vector Cigma" that helps to explain all this. I think it's a 2 part episode, but it might be 3 parts. Look it up, and see if you can find it.
38:20 - Galvatron couldn't open the Matrix, because he is a Decepticon. Ultra Magnus couldn't open the Matrix, because he wasn't the "Next Prime in Line".
39:40 - How appropriate, that Unicron destroyed Cybertron's moons, then his head became the only remaining moon of Cybertron.

For THIS particular series, the Matrix for all intents and purposes WAS the All-Spark because that's where all transformers Sparks joined together. Of course it's also possible that the All-Spark was ON Cybertron, but was given the name Vector-Sygma. Vector-Sygma is what gave life to a few newer Autbots and Decepticons from the show. They were known ans the Stunticons and the Aeriobots.

the Combiners (5 vehicles) and the Transformer city , were introduced in a OVA called SCRAMBLE CITY.
and it showed G1 Ultra Mangus as Scramble City Commander , and Prime was still alive.

Favourite scene in the movie, that closeup of megatrons face as he is gloating over Optimus, just broken, chipped, leaking and generally beaten the hell out of.

Amusing fact: The song "The Touch" was later used in the movie Boogie Nights as one of the songs Dirk tries to record. I about lost my shit in the theater during Boogie Nights.
