Have not played Magneto yet, but am very excited to give him a shot. He's got a cool set of cards, he's one of the coolest mutants, and the choice to depict him primarly in the white outfit is sleek as hell, as much as I love the classic red and purple. I'm very excited to try him in Protection, no surprise there as I've said in the past it might be my favorite Aspect. The concept of Magneto using his magnetic powers to protect others is very cool, and playing in Protection gives me a fun excuse to run Polaris, who is already just a good character for Protection X-Men in general but also thematically works for Magneto as she's his daughter! I think Magneto could tank damage well enough to play a Taunt build very well, which I've been exploring more and more. Plus any card that serves as a barrier opens up some fun possibilities with Perfect Defense. A lot of cool green ideas I'm excited to try with Magneto, Master of Magnet! I would be pleased with him even if he were mid-tier power level but the fact that he's pretty solid overall is just a fun bonus, and a blessing that lets me play a cool, beloved character without feeling like I'm bringing the team down!
I'd put him somewhere in the bottom half of my A tier. He's strong, he can defeat pretty much every villain in the game and decent in every aspect, but especially Leadership. But fun factor is a lot more important to me as well and he's really high on my list too. Not sure if he's top 10 or just barely misses it, but he's up there! I think overall this was a very solid wave, from what I've gathered, a lot of people found new favorites and most people liked at least 2, if not 3 heroes a lot, which is great in my book. Magik and Bishop is in my top 10 favorites, Iceman I feel a bit indifferent about, but I have more fun playing him than not (a friend of mine absolutely loves him), Jubilee I really like, probably in my top 15, but my friend who likes Iceman isn't that head over heels for her. All 3 of us in my group really like Nightcrawler, he brought a new archetype in the game and just in general, we like the character from the comics/cartoons/movies. I really like Magneto and it might become a friend's favorite new hero, though he hasn't played him yet, he's really hyped for him ever since he was announced. Great review as always D20!
But there's still no way to wiff unless the rules have changed. You just reshuffle your deck and keep discarding cards. Only the encounter deck stops when you dexk out.
Page 31, under Player Deck, Right column, 2nd bullet point, "If the player's deck empties while the player was discarding cards from their deck, no further cards are discarded from the newly shuffled deck."
@@D20Woodworking Oh, this must have been why I got it wrong all those years ago. I misunderstood what they meant when they said the following: "If the player’s deck empties and reshuffles while the player was drawing cards, the player continues to draw cards up to the specified number."
I agree that the magnetic minion cards really bring Magneto down on anybody's ranking. I also think that the designers spent more time with Magneto with the theme and how his cards work.
I only miss magnetic pull once. I usually take my deck and just look if I have any. It saves time to do the same thing and the game is not competitive. I don’t do it if there’s hidden info like ultron; card steal, or encounter shuffled into it
I'm thinking A-tier Once you get his 'Cape' (#1 for me) he becomes Very solid...just like any character with a 0ER (once in play) *ready-up*. He is usually slightly above most with a *base* stat-line of 2-2-2 and readily buffs in-kit, hence why he hovering in low A with that basis. None of his cards themselves hit high numbers, apart from that basic activation/s combo. But those 4 cards that are *fully reliant* on minions (2 of which not only require a minion, but need that minion affected by another of your cards) hurts overall power in some scenarios in Solo, but shines in MPer. Sure is a powerful combo...when you get it to work. I think it hurts slightly more than gains in marks there. Again in Solo, his thwart event is often pretty *meh*! In Solo and the number of attachments you'll see (on ave that it can target), is quite low and then his event is just 3ER for 3 threat removal...meh! Unless of course you *know* you are playing Venom-Goblin or Ronan...which having multiple ways to deal with some nasty parts of those 2 foes does keep him in the A-tier for me. Having the *X-men* trait brings a lot of support power when you start deck-building too. Got some good built-in *resilience/survival* is pretty damn nice levels. "Very Solid with some niche bonus'", A-tier, but not super S tier.
Great review and discussion…only suggestion is there were way too many ad breaks in the podcast. I think for a 25 minute episode an ad at the beginning and one in the middle is about right. This episode had I think 5 ads
Random question, just wanted to ask on a current video lol. If you block all the damage does retaliate still trigger? Using storm when this came up. Thx
It will not because you are losing your bubble after the shield checks. So essentially, take damage, check to see the damage and if it's enough to remove the shield, if it is, remove it, then retaliate from anything on the board.
I personally feel he lands somewhere in the top 10 to top 15. He's so rich and can use so many cheap resource generators that his high cost cards don't feel like they're high cost. I also don't flip down much with him. I think he's stronger just staying in hero as long as possible and exploiting his magnetic pull and cape.
I liked him, but I don't think he'll be a go to for me. I've only played him in one solo game and about 12 or 13 multiplayer. The biggest problem with him I think was pointed out by VT. Because of his randomness you basically just need to build really good generic decks, as combos are more difficult than normal to hit. I tend to like deck-building hooks when I play a character, and I've played plenty of generically good decks that can basically slot into anyone. I rank him slightly above the middle of A tier, but that is heavily biased towards multiplayer as I just haven't got him to the table a lot in solo yet.
Less than a minute in, I'd give him an S-. He's 11th from the top, having a hard time justifying him in my top 10 but he is really good. He is a lot of fun, but I am playing him in multiplayer.
I do not believe it is essential to flip-down to capitalize on regaining lost cards. As VillainTheory and I concluded independently with our own builds, you focus on Magneto's magnetics and his pull, and everything else is butter that adds to his flow. Rarely do I flip down, and twice I have for first time ever not taken damage with a hero in a game, because Magnetic Bubble is bonkers good (I basic defend power to reduce damage to Bubble, if valid, keeping it out longer). Magnetic Bubble is only thing I will go back and grab, when depleted, if justifiable.
For my friends and me, Nightcrawler was the biggest disappointment, his cards do not feel cost-effective for what he does, compared to other heroes and what they do better. As much as I love Mutants, I am ready for a good long break too. Be nice to see in a few years from now tho, they come back and do another X-Men cycle (Beast, Emma Frost, as examples) and an X-Factor cycle.

Let’s go!!! Thanks for the review, D20!
2:56 how do you wiff? Count your cards before doing magnetic pull lol
Sometimes the card is caught facedown under another card. Not sure if it's in the deck or not. This happens.
But there's still no way to wiff unless the rules have changed. You just reshuffle your deck and keep discarding cards. Only the encounter deck stops when you dexk out.

@@D20Woodworking Wow. I must have just completely read it wrong when I originally read the rules. Thanks.

RUclips controls that. I don’t really have much to do with it.

Magneto is good and strong, but I’m kinda meh with him too. But I don’t have a huge collection (maybe about 40% of the cards)

I hope they come back in a few years and do it. People that really want those missing heroes I think deserve it.
I so want to see Emma Frost and what they do with her. Between her psychic abilities and diamond skin there is a lot of interesting options for her.
They'd have to get licensing again, which I've heard in interviews is pretty tricky for the X-Men for some reason.
Nope…. Iceman has been the most fun for me
