As a violinist, Holmes's hold of the violin nearly made me spit my coffee. I nearly died. Why was it held so vertically by his ear when it needs to be flat. And not to mention the bowing. At least they hid it with the sheet music.
"The strong-minded woman with the weak handwriting, and the weak-minded woman with the strong handwriting! The inconsistency of the female, Watson!" Holmes, I'm pretty sure that just means your handwriting analysis is bull. XD
Now I know where the late Jeremy Brett got his inspiration for his role as Sherlock Holmes: from Eugene Deckers, the guy who played the role of the Russian composer Serge Smernoff. Those exaggerated movements, sudden shifts and swaying of hands. What do you think, guys?
The actress who plays the Russian ballerina was the actress who played the showgirl in the case of the Eiffel Tower, she picked up the coin that Sherlock Holmes had thrown from the tower. Perhaps, the female actress pool was limited.
Some people have been asking, "why do the characters in Chernobyl have English accents?" It's because when you get British actors to try Russian accents, you get this. I still love it, though 🤭
Have you ever noticed, that gorgeous, passionate & talented Russian ballerina as a suspect in a good old-fashioned murder mystery show is an absolutely must? Look at "Murdoch Mysteries", which are set in the end of 19 - beginning of 20 century, - of course, there is an episode with Russian ballerina as a main femme fatale!
The Victorian style sets are quite extravagant, which is good, since the actor playing Smirnov certainly chewed the scenery!😉 But I am shocked that "Lovey" Howell could be a murderess!
These really are fun - awful over-acting, stock caricatures, stilted scripts, cast members turning up as different characters in different episodes and dreadful jokes. Brilliant!
It is so hard to tolerate This Dr. Watson personna. Why would they want him to act like a drop out spoiled clueless loser, when he is supposed to be a graduate from college, in a war, wounded and in the thrall of many murders with Sherlock? bah
shirley savitts......just as Lee Takamiya stated! How did you forget to mention the most important?! A Medical Doctor and not just ''supposed to be''...He is! Anyone could have been in a war, in those days...wounded..most likely . ''In the thrall''? your reasons are less than... You might be thinking of the other Watson.....who is such a ''clueless'' buffoon. But, this Watson is not a loser or ''spoiled''...hmm...how did you come up with that one? What makes him appear spoiled to you?
Holmes addresses the Russian dancer as Mademoiselle. I thought that was weird (and not like Holmes) till I found out the actress who played her is French. She was also in 'The Case Of The Eiffel Tower'. She's a nice singer, too, at about 16.00. ruclips.net/video/iWQh0lbweKo/видео.html
if you want to compare howard to all the other holmes actors, especially jeremy brett or basil rathbone, it's definitely been commented on before, like a million times, on every episode of every show ... a simple "ditto" will suffice at this point !
An unbelivable case with a troubled Dr Watson's mix up cap being evidence cleverly investigated by Holmes with interpretation of handwriting and logic .
The playful misogyny in old movies like this is absolutely refreshingly fun. There was a time when we could all laugh at ourselves and take a joke. Woke culture has ruined everything.
I can understand being attached to your favorite hat and not liking to wear anyone else's, but doesn't Watson have at least one more hat to use in the meantime? It is nearly like only having one pair of shoes.
These are a bit to flippant, childish if you like especially the cowgirl one compared to the Jeremy Brett series , probably the best of all the Sherlock Holmes series.
Certainly not the most faithfully filmed adaptation! Where is Mrs. Hudson, the Hansoms, Broughams and Dog Carts? The lovely English countryside and all those lovely English Roses that walk on two long and slim legs??? No Sir, the most faithful adaptation is easily Granada TV's adaptation, with Jeremy Brett as Holmes and David Burke/ Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson! Why, even the dialogues of the Granada TV Series are very, very close!! Adapting the short stories into the under-30 Minutes format means no frills - the 1 Hour format of Granada TV was just about right for each of the Short Stories! The plots in this series are weak too, with only The Engineer's Shoes being very close to the original, The Engineer's Thumb! Overall though, they are quite enjoyable to watch, but faithful reproduction they are certainly not!!
agreed that in the short time frame, they can't develop the mystery of the cases in much depth. BUT I think this version is more about the little comedic quips and jolly dynamics between Holmes, Watson, Lestrade etc... it's just "cute and fun" :)
I was wondering what was going to happen in 26 minutes; then I also lost interest by the comedic acting. It's not what I had expected. But it's short so I watched the entire thing.
i understand your feeling, but i have to say that i have heard that so many times in watching every holmes series, the comment about jeremy brett... or other actors who played holmes, it seems an endless need to draw comparisons.. i like brett, rathbone, and howard, i like them all

It's Lovey Howell! She was quite attractive.
really nice
Has anyone noticed that "The Spider's Web" is a messed-up version of the opening chords of Chopin's "Prelude in C minor, Opus 28, Number 20?"
No
O yes haha😅
Excellent
I recognize her the ballerina played lobby and Gilligans island such a beauty
Umm... You wanna edit your comment? 🤔
The Victorian style sets are quite extravagant, which is good, since the actor playing Smirnov certainly chewed the scenery!😉 But I am shocked that "Lovey" Howell could be a murderess!
Natalie Schaffer. Ms. Howell you were a bad girl. She was a beauty. Never changed one bit.
...the head of Russia Ballet character reminds me of Larry Storch's character, "Corporal Agarn", from the old comedy series "F Troop".
😊Howard and Crawford as Holmes and Watson are an original odd couple.
Lovey!!!
Mrs Howell sure got around. I wonder if
Thurston knew.
These really are fun - awful over-acting, stock caricatures, stilted scripts, cast members turning up as different characters in different episodes and dreadful jokes. Brilliant!
thomas miles The acting is appalling but I love it
thomas miles I’ve just had a thought that the acting was directed on purpose to be over the top.
Most of these actors were from the stage. Television was still relatively new. They were still projecting as if they were on stage.
Such great villains
It is so hard to tolerate This Dr. Watson personna. Why would they want him to act like a drop out spoiled clueless loser, when he is supposed to be a graduate from college, in a war, wounded and in the thrall of many murders with Sherlock? bah
shirley savitts And a Doctor.
I AGREE wholeheartedly And this episode isn't even the worst. It's terrible that they made him do that.
shirley savitts......just as Lee Takamiya stated!
I can't stand this Dr. Watson.
Agreed. I always thought Nigel Bruce was too much the bumbler as Watson, as well.
Brava, Schafer!
Love Eugene Deckers!! And The Ballerina Chick Is Super Cute!!
It's Lovey Howell!!
Quite a looker back then.
what a lovey episode !
>
Yes ! That, too ! B-)
Very good.
Thank 🤩🤩💖
Sherlock Holmes woulda had it so much sooner but for those contrarian wimmin!!!
Still love this series, watch it every night before bed.
this my be a stupid question but is that women play on Gilligan island? the ritch couple?
You just won a free Pizza! Great catch! It is indeed Nathalie Schafer aka Mrs. Lovey Howell from Gilligan's Island.
Oops. I thought it was Carol Channing, in the thumb nail. 🤷♀️
oh no - is he going to be arrested again!!?? LOL He is so marvelous.
Note to self, watched 1/5/18.
lol, I should start doing that. I'm 7/16/20 during the seemingly never ending pandemic.

Lestraid has to be the worst detective ever. He couldn't find his rear end with a bloodhound.
He couldn't pour pee out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel! 👢
3:33Why didn't he dash after him before he went outside the downstairs door? There was plenty of time. 🤨
Hey, where's Gillian and the Skipper?
And the professor and Mary Anne.
😒🙄😮💨
Oh Misses Howle from Gilliagans island!!!!
What a hoot that Russian guy is.
Lovey from Gilligan's Island. She was an attractive lady 👩 in her time.
Natalie Schafer (Lovey "Gilligan's Island)
😒🙄😮💨
if you want to compare howard to all the other holmes actors, especially jeremy brett or basil rathbone,
it's definitely been commented on before, like a million times, on every episode of every show ... a simple "ditto" will suffice at this point !
👏🏻👏🏾🥂🍻👍🏼👍
Nathalie Schafer (Elaine Chelton) looks for the world like Carol Channing.
this watson is quite a looker...
That's one big gal to be a " Ballerina "........I don't think Lestrade could even pick her up.
Damn, Mrs Howell as a murderer. Gilligan would be so disappointed! He wouldn't approve of her killing her husband!
RUclips should not run political ads.
Bravo👍
I can understand being attached to your favorite hat and not liking to wear anyone else's, but doesn't Watson have at least one more hat to use in the meantime? It is nearly like only having one pair of shoes.
15:14 i missed the clue ! for once it was there, for sleuthing
Oh Lovey!
These are a bit to flippant, childish if you like especially the cowgirl one compared to the Jeremy Brett series , probably the best of all the Sherlock Holmes series.
But these are so much more uplifting surely.
@@iskrahol ..They are what they are and yes I have actually enjoyed watching them.
I do think Jeremy Brett absolutely captures Holmes' supercilious hauteur.
@@terencephillips6833Brett=🤮
@@T333TN Give me the wholesome, original stories! Any day!!
Not to mention Moriarty or Mycroft or cocaine...but I sort of like the 50 ish light hearted sitcom feel just as a simple indulgence.
I was wondering what was going to happen in 26 minutes; then I also lost interest by the comedic acting. It's not what I had expected. But it's short so I watched the entire thing.
i understand your feeling, but i have to say that i have heard that so many times in watching every holmes series, the comment about jeremy brett... or other actors who played holmes, it seems an endless need to draw comparisons.. i like brett, rathbone, and howard, i like them all
Leslie Howard's son?
Yes
I guess Mr. Howell was her second husband.🤔
Mrs. Howell; future castaway!
