Raj Kapoor films always had a socialistic message. He is a poor guy running after money in any way he could. While doing that he leaves behind the people who love him, gets hooked to a heartless rich woman.. in this song he comes back to his roots. The girl sitting under the lamppost is the teacher who loves him, the old woman is the one who treated him like her own son, this whole community had taken place of his family whom he had spurned in his quest for instant riches.

Yes, the name Sri 420 is derived from IPC Section 420- applied for crime of cheating, forgery. I think in other countries also the same section is applicable for such a crime because our constitution, IPC, CRPC are designed on basis of British, French and some other countries' similar documents. USA's laws are also designed on similar basis....... So these criminal laws are similar all over the world so that people know them and refrain from any such crime even on a foreign land.

@@ant5630 To be honest, they have really started ignoring the comments now. Earlier, Rick used to reply in the comments and Korbin used to regularly heart some of the comments. Now it doesn't happen I think mostly because people have been a lot rude to them lately. In movie reviews or in other videos where they tend to make some mistakes. Maybe that's why they're not too interested now. That's just my thoughts.

@@whitewalker608 I guess it's their choice to handle rudeness this way. But this is what they seem to be doing full time, it's their work. You can choose to disconnect and not take the people engaging with videos into consideration, but that's not going to work well in the long run. I mean it's the internet, of course some people are going to disagree or be rude. If someone is harassing or abusive, block and move on. But they seem to be choosing to go the route of just take the ad revenue from videos and Patreon income, engage only with the clique of people who pay or follow closely on social media and ignore the rest because they don't matter. Oh well.

Oh gosh, this unlocked a memory... I don't know if you'll read this, but, when Raj Kapoor walked out of the party and the male voice started singing (playback singer Mohammad Rafi), it reminded me of a 1980s UK show called 'Movie Mahal' - I think episodes are available on RUclips! I watched it as a child because it subbed the songs and explained who the people were and a little of the history of the music. Do check it out!
Incidentally, the hero Raj Kapoor has the playback singer Mukesh. The two were like one face and voice for decades. True magic.

Raj kapoor was star in Soviet Union. His films were as popular in Russia as they were in India. That's why his old film music has a hint of Russia. India and Russia were fast frends at that time ( today too) China was also in the same boat until the back stabbing of 1962.

You didn't get the vibe of this song. It is about materialistic western culture and spiritual indian culture. The hero belongs to the village but somehow he got success and left his village(basti) and went with industrialist, upper class people. There were lights, dances performed by attractive ladies, money, fame, power etc. but the soulfulness was missing. He didn't felt love, simplicity, care for each other there. Hence when he left from there, he felt a sense of renunciation from that material environment, he was fed up. Whereas he felt lovely connection at village(basti). He felt soulful connection. Hence the song is about "won't you return?", it is actually talking about his return and his regret that he left at first place in attraction of money, but felt no love there, but materlism, hence a sudden renunciation caused him to return to his roots.
PS : westners have difficulty understanding renunciation, I have seen it. People cry over this song as if some loved one who left, realises his mistake and comes back. Subah ka bhula sham ko ghar aa jaye to use bhula nhi kehte.

This is the film what made Raj Kapoor what he was. A great showman. If possible you should watch all the Raj Kapoor movies.

This might be slightly controversial, given how much people seem to enjoy this spectacle. But I will be straightforward and say it, there are somethings that just don’t translate and travel. This is not “Bollywood party song”, these are songs and cinema that made India a nation, gave it it’s veryethos. This is not Bollywood, Hell the term Bollywood did not exist then, this is an exercise in Nation Building. These are movies made right after India became Independent.
To be honest, you need to understand basics in India music to understand the basic sorrow in the tune. While that people are dancing, it is all Melancholia, and you don’t need the lyrics to understand it. This is a masterclass in Indian music, ethos, culture everything.
Raj Kapoor is a giant, any ‘Cinema” lover would know when to shutup and throw their assumptions about the craft and the technicalities out and just feel.
I am personally fed up, with seeing such thing being reviewed. The palette is just not there.

Not at all controversial, all completely true. But unfortunately this comment is too lovely, knowledgeable and insightful to be understood by 90% of people here or Indians in general today, let alone american reactors. Not that they are bothering to read or understand anyways :)
But thanks for chiming in, it's good to know at least some people know and understand this. There have been a handful of commenters in the videos who have tried to give deeper insights like this over months. But deaf ears and all that!

We were in down town L.A. in 2002 . One shop owner asked us , if we knew Raj Kapoor. When we said we shared the same neighborhood . He said , he was in Israel during his growing up days and never missed movies Raj Kapoor made ! Somebody , who does not speak Hindi recalled after almost five decades . This is what the one and only showman of Hindi movies has been and remain so forever ! Would strongly recommend to all who are yet to enjoy , please do it now. There has been nothing like his movies !

My fav part of this song is from 6:40 to 7:00, how the song reaches from Raj Kapoor to Nargis, with different people singing it and carrying it forward to Nargis. You should definitely watch Shree 420, Chori Chori, Jagte Raho, Awara, and many more such gems by Raj Kapoor.
Fun fact: Raj Kapoor is an alumni of the same school I studied in, Antonio De Souza High School, Mumbai and the school can be seen in Ranbir Kapoor's Sadda Haq song (the church and the school in the background).

He is the grandad Kapoor for Ranbir Kapoor, Karishma kapoor, Kareena Kapoor. He the one who stabilized Kapoors as legit royalty in the world of cinema. He is the father of rishi kapoor. He directed movies that touched social topics and was considered one of the best directions. He has received award for lifetime achievement. He touched on social topics such as urbanization at the cost of the poor, widow remarriage, and stigma. He was considered visionary director and a good actor. He had a knack for using music in his movies in amazing style. Although his father was in the movies, nobody could meet the level of competence, technique and fame he achieved in his lifetime. He was loved across Russia (old soviet union) for his movies that had a pro-people message. His songs were sung in Soviet-era

"Ramiah Vastaviayya" or "రామయ్య వస్తవయ్యా" Song is from Raj Kapoor’s “Awara” film. It is a matter of surprise how can Telugu words have become beginning (పల్లవి ) of a Hindi song. There’s a story behind it. When RK started making of this film,”Awara”, the music team used to go to Khandala to make songs. During such trips to Khandala by all the four (Shanker,Jaikishan, Shailendra and Hazrat Jaipuri ) they, used to stop at a roadside hotel for chai and snacks etc. There was working, a Telugu person called “Ramaiah”. Shanker used to talk to him in Telugu and give order to him only, not to anyone else. Shanker knows Telugu very well as he was born and lived in Hyderabad ,though they are originally from UP. On such one visit to hotel, Shanker called Ramaiah to take the order. Ramaiah signalled him to wait as he was busy with some other customers. As there was some delay in his coming, Shanker became little impatient and started humming “Ramaiah Vastavayya” Ramaiah Vastavaiayya” calling Ramaiah to come quickly. To his words Jaikishan started making tabla sounds on the serving table. This went on for a while, Hasrat got bored by this repetition snd said to Shanker “only this much, nothing more? ”.then Shaiedra immediately added “ mainey dil tujhko Diya “ meaning "I have given my heart to you". When both lines sung together, they thought this could be a song, if continued further. After some time Ramaiah came, took the order and served. These lines and tune was told to RK, he was very impressed and accepted . He created a situation and lyrics were written keeping these lines intact. They wanted to replace “Ramaiah Vastavayya “line with some Hindi words, but no suitable line was found and no one was happy replacing it. So, they retained original Telugu words, even though Hindi audiences did not understand its meaning. This song was super hit and considered as one of the best songs in the Hindi film music.
