This video ran in normal day-time television. Japan didn't have such mad views on nudity back in the 2000s. In Europe it ran after midnight on MTV. So the marked was there at the time and responsive. I suppose things have chanced since then (no wonder, most online video platforms are American after all). Actually, every single image has a meaning represented in the lyrics. This is the video director's vision of it, though and does not fully represent the band's. Whether it adds to your listen experience is therefore very much dependent on your own interpretation of the song but it's definitely not done solely for shock value [although that certainly plays a part! It's a difference, however, to use shocking images to make people talk about you or because they have a specific function within a piece of art - keep in mind here that art is always also a political expression. Since you guys are from the UK: Sarah Kane used the direction: "He eats the baby" in her play Blasted. UK Critics used to think of her as some dumb punk kid who just wants to shock people, not even recognising the similarity of her images (and power of speech) to antique mythology, Shakespeare and other Jacobean playwrights, while she was celebrated because of that outside the UK. Things there only changed after her suicide and even now most people don't seem to get it. It's quite puzzling but very interesting to me.] The more videos you will see by this guy the more you will find that nothing he ever shows is purely random or picked for superficial reasons. This reaction was pretty nice to watch though and I hope the guy on the right was triggered to dig a bit deeper :)
Dir En Grey is definitely a live band. They have very few songs which are better in studio than live. Try Kaishun from them to hear his clear singing and high notes(perhaps the only song where studio version is better) Uroko(death metal with some high vocals) Different Sense and decayed crow for pure brutalness Vinushka live is their one if the most popular songs for reactions(View of the acro version)
I first saw this about 20 years ago, still listen to it from time to time, and made sure to watch it with Lucy (if you know what I mean) and never got the abortion thing. But you make a fair point lol Especially with the tree that grows baby heads lol
yeah, abortion was basically being used as birth control in japan at the time, there were an insane amount of them being performed because there was a stigma against girls taking the pill or using condoms (a girl using or wanting to use either of these would make a guy think she's easy) so basically, tons of unplanned pregnancies, tons of abortions happening.
.your memory is wrong. You're mixing up this video with the one for Mazohyst of Decadence. Both music videos were heavily censored at first. Check out the censored videos out first. They give a rather unique watching experience. In case of Mazohyst video it even emphasizes the meaning of the song that way imo. (The uncensored video is available on YT with eng subs.

Hopefully next time you turn on (CC) subtitles on next time.
The CC option was not available on this video I'm afraid, greyed out
I love this song and this video, but it’s so extreme that I would never recommend it as an introduction to the band.
Yeah the band has a big range, right! Thanks for watching and commenting 🙌🖤
💀 Will need to react to something wholesome after this
I think you're right! Thanks for watching 🙌🎸

Afraid I don't follow, what do you think my memory is wrong about exactly?
The song is obscured cause it’s a anti abortion song
Thanks for the insight!
