You should check out Vinushka live (the vid where he is wearing black in the thumbnail and has over 1 mil views) since you were kind of on the fence with this one. This performance was also not the best he sorta mumbles through some of the singing parts.

Great song & performance! There’s a version of that with English subs on RUclips as well.

Favorite band ! Kyō the singer is a savage show man 🤘His high pitched screams are actually "whistle screams" even if they are maybe not best executed here.
Saw them live for the first time 20 years ago and still feel so many emotions !
    Time flies, keep smiling ♥

You can pronounce the name any way you want. Your pronunciation is actually the typical German one :)
This video is over 15 years old and probably not the _best_ version to start with as Kyo drops quite a few words and this was around the time the band was touring themselves to death. I personally love these lives because they are powerful and raw af but if you hear a song for the first time those things can be distracting.
I would still recommend reacting to live performances over studio because they really are a live band (meaning: a lot of their songs feel very different and more 'complete' live)
When it comes to the mixing Dir en grey are pretty experimental sometimes and quite often you only hear the brilliance when you have the perfect equipment to watch/listen on (most of their DVDs don't translate very well to RUclips).
When it comes to the video you were very taken by how 'disturbing' it was but there is a social and political component to the video that adds a deeper layer which is not so easy to understand by western audiences. There is definitely an element of shock-value but it's not done for shock's sake. Every single frame in that video has a meaning (I'm not kidding you. There are so many layers I could write a 200 page long paper about it. It also plays a lot with imagery from pop-culture, folklore, religion and imperial history). I understand your reluctance or wariness to comment on the song because you don't understand the lyrics and you are only confronted by a bunch of seemingly non-sensical imagery so I just wanted to comment on that and give some information. A lot of Dir en grey songs are concerned with social and personal matters of living and while some of them are written from a perspective that condemns a certain way of living or an action they are never judgemental. That's probably the thing that makes Kyo's lyrics so insanely poetical. They are often written from a very specific single-minded but very relevant view and its up to the listener to connect with the topic and think about it for themselves. Different songs can have a very different point of view on the same topic. The main theme of Obscure is the abortion crisis that was still very big when the song was written ( 2002/2003) and which was the result of a social refusal to use condoms. I have women in the Japanese side of my family who had 10+ abortions before they turned 30. It's not a joke. A lot of people interpret the song as being anti-abortion. That is certainly one interpretation, but it's not a relevant Japanese interpretation. The question at this time was not whether abortions should be allowed or not (of course they should be, if it's a woman's choice) but how to protect women and society from 'customary abortions'. And that is a legal and political debate that can only be understood through the eyes of the Japanese legal system and social/philosophical view on "what constitutes life". The video to "Obscure" is the video director's examination of this topic.
Since it's my first time on your channel I'm not sure what type of songs you usually like but I would love to recommend the song "Rinkaku" (live) mainly to hear your thoughts on Kyo's clean vocals there. Otherwise "Vinsuhka" (live from the Androgynous live) is always a good one to get a better picture of the band.
If you want to stick to studio versions for the next reaction go with "Different Sense" for a heavier song and "Otogi" for a newer one with clean only vocals.
Anyway, thank you for the reaction and sorry for this wall of text. Have a good day!

I read the whole text. It's amazing what your are writing.
Kyo is a damn good singer.
For a first live, they should not took an old version.
Kyo's voice got better over 20 years. This time I would say he is one of the best singer ever in the whole world. Absolutely love this band. 🥁🎸

Oh man this is so old school hahaha
I always have a sweet spot for old DeG in my heart even though its not as perfected as they are now both performance and voice-wise
Personally I wouldn't use older recording as an introduction to the band, however, it is always great to see the evolution. I beg you to make another video with some of newer stuff (if you take suggestions from comments I'm thinking about Different sense from Tour18 Shinsekai; very recent Schadenfreude from Phalaris tour; Diabolos from TOUR16-17 FROM DEPRESSION TO ______ [mode of DUM SPIRO SPERO]; Vinushka is a classic one). I believe this way you'll be able to really grasp the essence of the band + Kyo's vocals improved tremendously over the years
Anyways, thank you for featuring them on your channel and I hope to see you coming back! *~*

Much more important than the shocking content of the music video: There are 2 versions of Obscure. One is the old version from the music video and the other is the completely reworked new recording that you reacted to. In terms of sound, these are two completely different songs :D But I liked your reaction. You should really do one for their song 'Vinushka' (watch?v=BVhAVHcu-r0). I can highly recommend the videos with subtitles done by Kaya.

This concert is previous to Kyo's dysphonia surgery, his voice improved a lot once his problem was solved although he has a non conventional style and likes to play with his insane vocal range, diferent voices and weird primal sounds to express his feelings so may need few listens to appreciate it. It would be great if you gave them a new chance, they are quite special band. As others suggested, Vinushka live is great, but to recommend something else would say Tousei live ruclips.net/video/MA-zXhJBtNY/видео.html it's shorter and maybe more commercial or easier to digest to all kind of listeners.

There's no other band like Dir en grey. I hope I get to see at least one more reaction from the two of you to one of their more epic songs (preferably "The World of Mercy", "Macabre" or "Vinushka"). I would love to sponsor a song but that's about the money I have for a week to eat and drink :/
So a huge Thank You to the person who brought them on the channel so I can watch this one for free and to the two of you for the time and honest commentary!

You should do more DIR EN GREY. Kyo has a variety of vocal techniques, try Vinushka or Uroko (both Live). He is a great frontmen.
For Toshiya (Bass), he often changes his style and that makes him unique (but sometimes you might think he looks like someone).
Different strumming between two guitarists is often done in several Japanese bands, the ones I remember include DIR EN GREY and The Gazette.
And the last thing, if you search about Sinya (drum), he is said to be a drummer who creates unique patterns in every song.

Dir en Grey is not a band you can grasp on a first listen especially since their all lives are a whole new experience even with the same song. There is so much to explore with them and it will not be for everyone. Their studio releases are not the same song as the lives but not because they are better or worse. Just different. I would love to see you guys dive in little more with them~
Obscure was my fave song from them when I first started to listen them in the early 2000 and it still has a spot for me but I don't think it would be the song to start with if someone asked me to introduce them.

Alot of people start with obscure which can make or break dir en grey for most. Especially the music video with its intentional shock value. I feel there are many songs that better represent the band and their sound, skill and uniqueness. A relatively new song schadenfreude would be one I would choose. - ruclips.net/video/VXnNfHXKsNI/видео.htmlsi=OklOzfS_t-GI-z97

I did listen to this song but I couldn’t get past the high-pitched sound. I heard very few words; it was more like screaming and just bouncing around. I do agree that the guitar section was doing a great job of holding it together. My beats are charging, so I couldn’t hear what you were talking about in the mix. And I get what you mean, Jillian, about being wary of what you might see. I hear that some bands (not all) can be a little raunchy on stage. All-in-all, a great analysis today! 🎶 Cyd

Kyo, frontman, owner of a 5 octave voice, by the way, he has been singing like this for 30 years. But yeah, it's very scary. And the name of the group comes from the title of the novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray".

    • @sunrise2986
      @sunrise2986 4 месяца назад +1

I always wonder where such mis-information comes from. Simply to feed my personal curiosity: Where did you read the band's name had anything to do with _The Picture of Dorian Gray_ ? I love that novel btw. but just to clear this up; according to numerous interviews the band took the name from a song by the band Lareine and mistranslated it. When they became aware of their mistake they were already too big to change it and now it's simply a name that means 'Dir en grey' the band. There is no other meaning behind it.

This song itself is not really where vocalist(Kyō) shines when it comes to singing. Plus he likes to experiment a lot with his voice when performing live, so it's quite often that he changes a style each time they perform.
He can actually hit about 5 octaves, if I remember correctly. Vinushka is a song I'd usually recommend to people who are getting into their music, live performance, of course. That one is for versatility, Un Deux is my personal favourite when it comes to singing itself. :)
